In the midst of a busy week of art fairs and gallery openings in New York, exhibitions of recent work by Delcy Morelos and Teresita Fernandez offered welcome respite. Both artists have long explored the connection between humanity and the earth, and their new works invite visitors to reflect on and rekindle that connection. On view at Dia Chelsea, Delcy Morelos’s “El abrazo” is comprised of two immersive, multisensory installations—Cielo terrenal (Earthly Heaven, 2023) and El abrazo (The Embrace, 2023), the latter giving the exhibition its title—where surface and volume converge and collapse through monochromatic expanse and material accumulation. Reorienting considerations of land and site toward embodied forms of material and ecological knowledge, Morelos aims to cultivate moments of connection with what she describes as the “intimate humidity of the earth.” In “Soil Horizon,” at Lehmann Maupin, Teresita Fernandez debuts several bodies of work, including two large-scale sculptural pieces, a series of copper relief panels, and notably, her first film. Where previous exhibitions have focused more explicitly on the historical, socio-political, or elemental aspects of place, in Soil Horizon Fernández turns her attention to the inner realm, contemplating her coordinates through geological, cosmological, and existential lenses. The exhibition takes its title from a geology term used to describe the horizontal layers that make up what we consider earth, from the matrix of bedrock to the topmost layer of fertile soil. Each layer, or “horizon,” has its own unique material characteristics, and, like a portrait of a place, each demarcates the chronology, or life, of the land whose soil profile it constitutes. Did you have one as a child? Do you dream of one to adorn your future home (Chiara surely does!)? What is it about them that attracts us? We have been thinking a lot about what family and home mean to us as well as our own past. Would it be possible to represent this through a dollhouse or an artwork inspired by it? The Hermits are working on an installation project called “My Haunted Dollhouse” (working title). Unfortunately, we do not have fundings attached to this opportunity. However, if you’re an artist of any kind who has already made something related to the theme and would like to find a place to showcase it, or if you would like to collaborate with us and make something related to dollhouses – let us know! In 2017 I started a series of work that was titled Stacked Structures. Inspired by international architects who started designing to address space constraints, refocusing on creating a sense of community and reducing the environmental footprint. You're invited to the Free Opening Reception for Akwasi Afrane's exhibition at Mattress Factory on Friday, May 17, 6 - 8 PM. From his early years in Kumasi, Ghana, Akwasi Bediako Afrane displayed a boundless curiosity for technology. As a child, he would dismantle his father’s old televisions, stereos, and VCRs, and scavenge for discarded electronics in his neighborhood. This early fascination laid the groundwork for his current artistic practice, creating scenes and sculptures from discarded devices and salvaged components. Afrane's upcoming Mattress Factory exhibition, "D²NA - TC24: Visions of the Past," continues this exploration on a grand scale. Set amidst a darkened gallery, this work forms a cityscape of carefully arranged e-waste emerges. Old printers, computers, and sound systems have been meticulously deconstructed, their insides pulled apart, housing removed and reconfigured into something familiar yet otherworldly. Screens, LEDs, motors, and a working model train are reanimated, bringing back to life objects once destined for the landfill. Working intuitively with these materials, Afrane has created a small yet buzzing metropolis, one that feels simultaneously futuristic and nostalgic. Raindrops Are Falling on My Head 2022 Immersive installation with acrylic, plastic hose, plastic tarp, reflective sheets, LED light, and water. In Raindrops Are Falling On My Head, water is dripped from a height onto an acrylic box, simulating the sound and atmosphere of rain. An LED light is shone at an angle, reflecting the ripples of the water onto the surrounding walls. This work invites the audience to sit in a space of contemplation and let their thoughts run freely - a space that reflects the dilemma of choosing self or others. It explores the idea of how something as simple as rain can create a space of calmness, contemplation, or desperation. Will you choose calm or chaos? How to interact with the work: 1.
