Slowed down Art. One aspect of rest that benefits me personally is slowing down my artistic process and not rushing through the creation of my art. I’ve definitely landed on the perfect medium for that concept of slow haven’t I?? Breaking down these rocks into pigment for usable paint is quite a long and labor intensive process. Many of you have been here long enough to see my process from beginning to end and are shocked at how much work I have to do for such a small amount of pigment. So why do I consider this restful? It’s because it requires me to be very present in the stages both leading up to making the art, and during the art’s creations. Being rushed and hurried stresses me out. But with modern conveniences we are often encouraged to tackle tasks in the fastest, most efficient way. Beneficial sometimes for sure. Yet, more and more people are adopting this idea of slowed down living. It’s why we are trying to make sour dough starters when we could easily go purchase a loaf ready made. Why we try our hardest to nurse little seed starter trays when the plant nurseries have the vegetables already grown. And It’s why I will take the time to crush rocks or soil into pigments when the art stores have tubes ready to go. There’s something so satisfying when you buy out the time to do things the slower way. And this feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment leaves me feeling rested and whole. Yellow Passionflower (Passiflora lutea) not blooming yet but beautiful nonetheless. This delicate vine is native in Pennsylvania west to Kansas, and south to Florida and Texas. I transplanted this one to my pollinator garden from my wild backyard. It’s smaller and less aggressive than the more popular Purple Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata). Some of the dried results from our eco printing on the fire session in @shiningcliff at Thursdays workshop. We had a mix of results with the boiling and steaming method, in fact the steaming sheets almost caught fire! There is still beauty in the results however, so I made them up into 2 small delicate notebooks which I'll hang in my studio as I love them. Buiten zijn is gezond! Mensen die per week twee uur naar buiten gaan, zijn gemiddeld fysiek en mentaal gezonder dan mensen die dat niet doen... Dat verbaasde mij niet toen ik in een boek over je brein en natuur gedoken was 🧠 Mensjes zijn niet gemaakt om de hele dag in een kantoortuin naar een scherm te loeren... Mensen moeten lopen, groen zien en weten wat er in de wereld om hen heen gebeurt 🌍 Toch blijkt dat veel mensen twee uur per week niet redden 😱 En misschien nog wel erger is dat onze kinderen steeds minder buitenkomen... Bijna de helft van de kinderen in een onderzoek in 2007 nooit in een bos of op de heide 🥲 Tegelijkertijd worden we met z'n allen steeds ongezonder, meer stress, minder fit, het is mij duidelijk we moeten elkaar inspireren om meer naar buiten te gaan 💚 Ik ben heeeeeeeeel graag buiten en dankbaar voor alles wat er voor mijn camera voorbij komt hoppen! SCI-ARTIST IN RESIDENCE 2024 We are pleased to announce our inaugural Sci-Artist in Residence: Andrea Haenggi Born in a Swiss farming village and residing half of their life in Lenapehoking/Brooklyn, andrea haenggi (she/they) is a body-based transdisciplinary artist who cultivates a research-based “ethnochoreobotanic” practice. Rooted in co-creating dance with the land-sea, plant life, and more-than-human kin, their work seeks to foster multispecies communities in the present and shape questions around decolonization, climate change, feminism, liberation, and care. PRG believes in supporting artists through as many means possible – exhibitions, programs, publications, and space to actually make the work. Since 2017 PRG has been providing a dedicated residency program for artists and writers, with allocated workspace for creatives. This residency comes with a stipend and opportunities to show what has been produced during the residency, through an exhibit, publication or a program. The studio is located on the fourth floor of Express Newark (EN), in the historic Hahnes Department Store Building in downtown Newark, New Jersey. Slowed down Art. One aspect of rest that benefits me personally is slowing down my artistic process and not rushing through the creation of my art. I’ve definitely landed on the perfect medium for that concept of slow haven’t I?? Breaking down these rocks into pigment for usable paint is quite a long and labor intensive process. Many of you have been here long enough to see my process from beginning to end and are shocked at how much work I have to do for such a small amount of pigment. So why do I consider this restful? It’s because it requires me to be very present in the stages both leading up to making the art, and during the art’s creations. Being rushed and hurried stresses me out. But with modern conveniences we are often encouraged to tackle tasks in the fastest, most efficient way. Beneficial sometimes for sure. Yet, more and more people are adopting this idea of slowed down living. It’s why we are trying to make sour dough starters when we could easily go purchase a loaf ready made. Why we try our hardest to nurse little seed starter trays when the plant nurseries have the vegetables already grown. And It’s why I will take the time to crush rocks or soil into pigments when the art stores have tubes ready to go. There’s something so satisfying when you buy out the time to do things the slower way. And this feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment leaves me feeling rested and whole.
