Two sample sized solar dye experiments using some dried black hollyhock. I wish this flower had better light fastness. I’ll still use it. (And I have in several knitting projects) But like with all #naturaldyes that have this issue, I keep the color shift in mind when planning how I want to use it. For the direct iron mordant ( also called rust dyeing) I love how the gold rust spots powered through. Iron can be rough on fiber, so not sure if this is the best method for mordanting. Founded by Julius Arthur in 2016, House of Quinn is a place for exploration in craft, making and design. Julius’s work is grounded in uncomplicated materials and processes and inspired by an abstract view of the places and things around us. Growing up in Cornwall, memories of childhood and a sense of home and belonging intersect in Julius' work. Quilts have become a staple motif in Julius' work. A way of combining materials, connecting through stitch and exploring shape, form and line. The connection between canvas and practical objects blurs the boundaries between art and function and the idea that objects used, bear meaning through their connection with the day-to-day. Indigo dyeing plays a large part in my process, and every spring, I look forward to putting together my indigo vat. On nice days, I bring everything outside and dye in my driveway and hang things on a large clothes line I have set up so that I can see everything together. The season of these spring & summer textile dyeing sessions are some of my favorite times of the year for dyeing. What many people don't realize is how much chemistry there is in my work. My vat is a 1-2-3 Fructose vat: 1 is indigo, 2 is Calcium Hydroxide, and 3 is Fructose. The amounts of each depend on the volume of water. I was thinking of working today, but it is raining where I am, and I don't want the acid rain to interfere with the pH of the vat. I use Organic Indigo created by @botanicalcolors. I went to @communityforklift to look at a spinning wheel they had. (Double drive flax wheel!) I couldn't buy it, but I found other treasures. They sell big slabs of wood salvaged from trees that are cut down. Gorgeous wood. My treasures were smaller pieces of wood. A lovely spalted sycamore for carving and a piece of osage orange. Yay! The wood of the osage orange tree makes a lovely yellow dye. You can see the wood color in the second pic. I got an almost 2 pound piece for $18. Buying the shaved wood or sawdust would cost more than that! Yeah, I have to chip it myself, but it's worth it.💛 #naturaldye #naturaldyeing #osageorangedye

• Testing, Testing • The results from a series of test dips I did on some of the dye vats for the @incontact_art project I'm doing some work for! I've never worked with red cabbage before, and know that it is a fugitive dye, however as I hadn't used it before, I was really interested with how it would take on the wool skeins Vs the nettle fabric sample. The resulting colours were just too nice not to share, despite them being small samples, so the details are below: • Far left ~ Red Cabbage with a low amount of soda ash, which produced a very purple dye vat! The samples looked a beautiful lilac when removed, but after rinsing & drying, have faded to a lovely cornflower blue • Middle ~ Red Cabbage with a higher amount of soda ash, which produced an inky blue dye vat. Interestingly, as this was rinsed and dried, the dark blue faded to a gorgeous stone-blue/green. • Far right ~ Nettle, collected in late April/early may. This produced a lovely yellow this time around. This dress was a custom order and another example of #ihavethebestcustomers . This dress was a complete blank slate and it had a belt that she wanted the option to use or not use with the dress. Custom orders, where a client gives me an inherited piece of clothing, definitely causes anxiety. I don’t want to mess it up and you only get one shot. She gave me a lot of creative control and a lot of time to practice and figure out what to do. I learned a lot from this dress down to how to remove the background from my photos. This one really delighted me - Grape Hyacinth (Muscari armeniacum) yields the most delicate blue that shifted to an almost sea green color with iron. This was something I was sure would give disappointing color. I was so wrong. The flowers were gathered by my kids and their friends from my yard and the blooms stripped from the stems. This was also on muslin and BFL combed top with a 15% alum mordant. Made my first ever lake pigment from an exhausted madder root dye bath. As opposed to earth pigments which are ground from rocks and stones already existing in the earth, lake pigments are extracted from botanical sources. After a slow process of extraction, neutralisation, filtration and dehydration, the pigment can then be ground into a fine powder and has the potential to be used as watercolour, pastel or oil paint.
