Jensen Kimmitt is an Edmonton based painter and all around philosopher. His acrylic painting Poolside by the Sea strikes a fine balance, teetering between figuration and abstraction. "The greatest thing we have lost through our obsession with industrialism is mystery. All the things we claim to value are not much more than the service of addiction we wish we could escape. We enjoy comfort to the extent that it is not a respite from labour but an absurd, confusing mess we worship. The drudgery is lamentable, but at least it’s not the prospect of actual change. How about we don’t and pretend we did? How do you teach the helpless to help themselves, especially when you are no different? All the accepted methods are pre-sanitized by the problem we wish to solve. The medicine is not only considered poison, but something classified a magnitude beyond evil -we don’t have a word for it yet because nobody can agree on the definitions. There’s a panel being assembled to discuss the matter. We’re all looking at different things, seeing in them illusions of a unity that stands no hope of survival in such a world. Worse yet, those who are disillusioned enough to see through the chaos are possessed by a compensatory spirit of conscientiousness so misplaced that it’s at best an intervention that threatens the life of the patient as much as the condition. It turns out, even with all our technological profiteering and self-aggrandizement, we are unfortunately still human. Like children at play, we revisit history repeatedly to hopefully forget reality and all its humiliating and incomprehensible mystery. By seeking the wrong answers, we find more reason to avoid ourselves.
