This time it all started with a book I found by chance. The title “Night Parade of One Hundred Women” is a play on the title of an old Japanese scroll I found in this book: “Night Parade of One Hundred Demons”. The scroll illustrates a story where supernatural creatures cross into the real world and march through the streets. I wanted to play with the idea of my imagined feminine beings breaking the veil between our world and theirs, bringing with them the freedom of nudity, chaos, rebellion, hedonism and a celebration of femininity. I am chuffed to bits to be able to announce my first solo show of my prints! A whole week of being able to show my prints and chat about the process behind making them, should anyone be interested! Friday May 31st - Thursday June 6th The Mayfly Studio, Watchet (just off Swain Street) 11am - 4pm every day. Join me for a cuppa and a chat if you catch me in a quiet moment. What do I do? My prints are mostly linocuts, I have a feeling I will be carving my current one during the exhibition. Collagraph, drypoint and kitchen lithography also feature in my work, sometimes combining different print techniques to get a particular result. I’ll bring along printing plates so you can see what some of the prints were printed from. This has all been made possible by the family of Nick Cotton, of the Lynda Cotton Gallery. Priscilla is a farmer/chemist/seed collector/textile artist from Raymondville, Texas. We have been in each other’s orbit & friends for a handful of years now, but this year we got extra close as she worked on her year long residency at the Art Business Incubator on South Padre Island while also farming, working two jobs & being a single mom. To say she is a super hero is a big understatement. I mentioned how much I wanted to work with all the seeds and plants she uses in her artwork and farming practice to make a poster for her solo show. For me the arco iris symbolizes a bridge between creation and subject matter. In my work I seek to express the essence of a subject. My process is bold, intuitive and spontaneous, pushed by a strong sense of exploration and a desire to push the boundaries of expression. Transparencies and layering allow me to build dimension, complexity and nuance in a piece, just as layers of experiences and emotions shape our own perception of the world. While my subject matter varies, each piece is intrinsically connected by a shared thought process and approach. It is important for me to create each new work freely, without worrying about how it fits with previous things I have made. Once there is a set of works, each piece created with its own identity and purpose, then the threads emerge that bind them. . Lors de ma dernière visite dans l’atelier de Sergio Morábito, je me suis attardée sur cette œuvre en cours, dont l’artiste lui-même ne connaissait peut-être encore le devenir. Elle m’apparut d’emblée comme une Ascension, me rappelant notamment celle, très colorée, du Pérugin conservée au Musée des Beaux Arts de Lyon. Bien que le thème du sacré soit absent dans les œuvres de Sergio Morábito, on y décèle souvent un caractère « religieux » au sens étymologique de « religare » : relier, ici, à une forme de transcendance. Cela se traduit alors par une réflexion sur l’existence et le temps en prenant à témoin les choses, dans des tableaux qui prennent l’allure de Vanités habitées.
