Good morning friends, I’m excited to I have the distinct pleasure of welcoming assemblage artist Kurt Reynolds to the gallery. Prior to moving to his Provincetown studio, Kurt worked in the field of human services which has informed and guided his creative process and the content of his work. Kurt has a reverence for found and acquired objects which are the language of his assemblages. His initial encounter with, a broken cup, a discarded keepsake, a toy soldier, marks the beginning of a work. His studio is a repository of objects, some of which have lost favor or purpose. Each object, like a single bead separated from a necklace, becomes a pearl in the visual narrative of the pieces he creates. I can’t wait for you to see them! 20 godina Galerije "Majka" / 20 years of Gallery "Mother" / Povodom Majčina dana 2000. godine fra Ljudevit Rupčić je napisao tekst 'Misli o majci izrečene u stihovima'. Aleksandar Antoljevič Zvjagin, ruski akademski slikar i kipar koji je u to vrijeme živio i radio u Mostaru, naslikao je djela na temelju misli koje su sadržane u tekstu. / Fra Ljudevit Rupčić došao je na ideju da otkupi sva Zvjaginova djela te da ih izloži kao stalni postav u jednoj prostoriji samostana na Humcu u Ljubuškom. Fra Viktor Nuić darovao je umjetnine iz svoje kolekcije koje su, uz Zvjaginova djela, činile temelj zbirke. Otvorenje stalnog postava upriličeno je uoči Majčina dana 2004. godine. Save the date! Our Spring Summer series continues on the 30th May. This month we’ve got a special treat for our show - joining us from Amsterdam is @emielsteenhuizen, a father and multi-disciplinary artist. He is the co-founder of renowned Amsterdam tattoo studio @mosel_mosel and together with his wife, Juultje Meerdink, he runs @studiosteenhuizen, which creates ceramic objects including vases and tile tableau. Born (1980) and raised in the nethermost part of the Netherlands, Emiel grew up surrounded by fields, farms and meadows. These form the backdrop to the work exhibited in his first UK solo show, ‘Close a door, open a window’. In his art Emiel relinquishes his drawing skills and experience in favour of a more naïve and intuitive approach. By using unusual tools and mediums he can let go of control and standard beauty. Through this lens he explores our relationship with work and pleasure: what we put ourselves through in order to enjoy our drink at the end of the week. Some shots of my thesis installation from the opening reception last week!!! I still can’t believe it’s all over. (Well, graduation is still a week or so away) But it was such a wild and surreal experience. This opening was roughly the 27th reception I’ve gone to for this program. Since I was very very little, I knew that the MFA thesis show ended the school year and kicked off summer. I would go (almost) every year and I would always try to take in as much as I could. I’d wander around from project to project, and I loved taking promo postcards and stickers. I’ve collected so many over the years. So, suffice it to say, I could barely believe it was finally my turn. It was my reception this time. Thank you so much again to everyone who came out to the opening, or has gone over this past week to the gallery. It means so much to me to share this crazy experience with all of you. Especially after working so hard to create this little world of my stories. I’m so glad you could meet Peter. I’m very excited to share more pieces with you here over the coming months. But, if you can’t wait that long, I’ve uploaded some book spreads to my website (link in bio) if you’d like to see them sooner. Diet Coke cheers to a real one! I’ve got a post coming tomorrow celebrating my 8th Soberversary, but today is about the future. It’s unfortunately too easy to dwell on the hard times and let those dark days define who we are at a given point in time. But ‘In Order To Live,’ also the name of our friend @dirtykics’ recent @toledomuseum photo exhibition, we must find a way to identify the positives and accentuate them in our daily lives. Positivity truly is a state of mind. To get to that place we have to intentionally steer our inner monologues towards more helpful patterns and, over time and with repetition, those self-affirming dialogues with our own souls will become our everyday outlook. Since going through that process myself over the last 8 years and putting my booze-soaked demons to rest, I can now identify those positives in my own life and in the lives of others as well. And there’s nothing more positive I’ve seen for an individual lately than the honor recently bestowed upon James Dickerson by Toledo’s Arts community. Like myself and so many of you, @dirtykics has walked through the darkness, looking for some light. And as ‘In Order To Live’ reaffirms, James has newly found a whole lot of brightness and hundreds of us got to share that with him on Friday. Thank you @dirtykics for being so open with many of us who have been searching for the light in our own lives. Your legendary photos and your story of determination have touched the lives of so many of my peers and friends and for that you should be proud. Because we’re all so proud of you, my man. And we’re excited for the doors that this honor could open for you! Like my Soberversary, there’s a place for remembering our past struggles. But cheers to you for embracing a positive future, James. May this be the new beginning of the next amazing chapter of a life worth celebrating.👊🏻❤️

Current: Made From Rain by Rhys John Kaye 17 - 18 May Made From Rain, Rhys John Kaye’s latest body of work, presents fragmented and fragile recollections of the artist’s life, free from the imposition of a linear narrative structure. These are not autobiographical depictions, but rather glimpses of memory intertwined with the perspective of the present. This is past made muddy with reference, allusion, and the irrepressible vantage of the current moment. Throughout these pieces, Rhys obscures the audience’s view with a persistent cover of rain. As a metaphor and visual device, this blurring of vision – a resistance to resolution – simultaneously invites the audience to look closer while also stubbornly thwarting our comprehension. Alongside the painted works, we find a series of porcelain buckets that allude to the fragility of painting itself and the tenuousness of the scenes depicted – not captured – in the medium. Collectively, these pieces ask a question: are our memories formed from truth, or do they function more like dreams – as stories we tell ourselves?
