Un dia 10 de mayo nace Armando Reveron, uno de los artistas venezolanos más influyentes del siglo pasado, conocido por muchos como “el pintor de la luz” y por otros como “el loco de Macuto”, en cuyo honor desde 1983 se ha decretado esa fecha como el Día del Artista Plástico Nacional. Reverón fue un apasionado del impresionismo francés y centró su interés en la acción de la luz. Construyó en La Guaira su casa, la cual denominó “El Castillete”, donde vivió al lado de su compañera Juanita Mota y las muñecas de trapo hechas por él, durante 30 años hasta que en 1953, año en el que recibe el Premio Nacional de Pintura y es recluido en el Sanatorio San Jorge, donde falleció el 18 de septiembre de 1954. El Castillete sufrió grandes daños durante la tragedia de Vargas en 1999 y aun espera ser reconstruido. Hoy saludo a todos los artistas plásticos venezolanos, dondequiera que estén. On May the 10th., Armando Reveron was born, one of the most influential Venezuelan artists of the last century, known by many as the “painter of light” and by others as “the crazy man from Macuto”, in whose honor since 1983 that date was decreed as the Day of the National Plastic Artist. Reverón was passionate about French impressionism and focused his interest on the action of light. He built his house in La Guaira, which he called “El Castillete”, where he lived with his partner Juanita Mota and the rag dolls he made, for 30 years until 1953, the year in which he received the National Prize for Painting and was confined in the San Jorge Sanatorium, where he died on September of 1954. The Castillete suffered extensive damage during the Vargas tragedy in 1999 and is still waiting to be rebuilt. New painting, Portals No. 29, acrylic polymer on canvas, 48 x 60: This is my latest Portals painting and I have made new changes. First, I have painted the vertical bands in even sizes which has created a wonderful squarish gradation above and below the first offset section. I didn’t add gray this time to the upper and lower sections to keep the fresh, airy feel of this piece. I also painted the colors symmetrically on the left and the right and found that this eliminated the struggle to keep the colors balanced. This also brings more emphasis to the central blue portal which may feel more grounding. The painting works equally well when placed vertically where it might have a more landscape feel. I like the way the larger blue rectangle that touches the lime green floats forward a bit, yet the greener bands tie it to the lime greens which keeps the connection in the color gradation. Jan van Eyck’s “The Arnolfini Portrait” is the painting that peaked my original interest in art. As an undergraduate student at Ohio State majoring in Psychology, I took an Art History course as an elective. I went into it thinking that paintings were just pretty pictures, but I was soon fascinated by the hidden symbolism and meaning of this painting. I went on to take another Art History course, and then another one, and another one… Art news: The Arnolfini Portrait, a renowned artwork by Jan van Eyck housed at London’s National Gallery, recently received a new frame, sparking debate on social media. Peter Schade, head of the gallery’s framing department, announced the replacement of a 19th-century Gothic frame with a 15th-century frame featuring gilded molding. One of the highlights of the visit was to learn more about the body of work he exhibited for the exhibition “Rites of Passage,” at @gagosian , London. Incorporating a unique technique of painting the landscapes and calligraphies onto the Xuan paper and enriches the images with cigarette burns. This unique approach was inspired by Wang’s experience of accidentally flicking the ash from his lit cigarette onto the Xuan paper.
