"Truly, I tell you, this very night, before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” (Matthew 26, 34). 17th century copy of a follower of José de Ribera "Lo Spagnoletto" (1591-1652), a Spanish painter and engraver who developed his career in Italy, between Rome and Naples. His style is influenced by the tenebrism of Caravaggio and the young Velázquez. The theme represents the repentance of Saint Peter, who denied being a disciple of Christ. The theme of The Tears of Saint Peter was very popular in Spanish painting of the Golden Age, which fit with the counter-formist doctrine of repentance and confession, and allowed artists to create works of strong emotion. The painting has been repainted, has varnishes and small defects. In any case, it is in very good condition for its age. This multi-panel drawing was based on the artist’s Magnolia Blossom and Magnolia Branch series. David Morrison was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa in 1956. He received his MFA in Printmaking from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1985. A visiting lecturer and guest artist at numerous universities, he is very involved in the world of printmaking, specifically stone lithography, and he is the Professor Emeritus at Indiana University’s Herron School of Art and Design in Indianapolis. This miniature jewel of a painting by Sarah Louisa Kilpack (1839–1909) shows the rocky coast at La Corbière in southwest Jersey. Kilpack is best known for her portrayals of stormy coastal scenes of the Channel Islands and she made a very successful living from her paintings in the latter part of the 19th century. This small-scale sunset view is a perfect distillation of the qualities that made her work so popular: whilst capturing the rugged beauty of the landscape and the dramatic potential of weather and light, she also introduces a human element and hint of narrative—here the Corbière lighthouse. A Hellenistic Funerary Stele in High Relief with Two Male Heads Marble Greek Hellenistic Circa 2nd Century BC Size: 20.5cm high, 38cm wide, 11cm deep - 8 ins high, 15 ins wide, 4¼ ins deep / 25.5cm high - 10 ins high (with base) Provenance: Ex Private collection, Paris, France, acquired early 20th Century Originally encased in an Art Deco plaster display mount with a grey polished surface Ex UK collection The fragment is probably from the upper part of a sizeable marble funerary ‘stele’. Decorated in high relief with two male heads. The head shown to the right depicts a youth gazing slightly outwards, while the head to the left depicts a man gazing upwards towards the youth.
