Reared by his mother, beadwork & Native American doll artist Tonnie Pahsetopah (who was also married to artist Loren Pahsetopah), he was surrounded by artistic influences. Majority of his works are watercolor, yet some are mixed media. Lionel attended Bacone College where he further expanded his knowledge & network with other talented Native artists. Beginning in the mid to late 80’s, Lionel exhibited & won awards from the Cherokee National Museum & Five Civilized Tribes Museums. "I wanted to capture a heroic and adventurous knight on some sort of exploration," says Kaysie Kendra, a 12th grade Meridian High School student who painted this picture of a knight with oil paint. To see Kaysie Kendra's artwork in person, and the rest of the student artwork in the West Ada School District's annual art show, visit Initial Point Gallery on the third floor of Meridian City Hall through May 20. Initial Point Gallery, which is curated by the Meridian Arts Commission, features a rotating series of art exhibits highlighting a variety of local, regional and national artists. Emil Bisttram (1895-1976) • On View A monumental painting by Emil Bisttram, a founding member of the Transcendental Art Movement in New Mexico and a Taos Modern, is now available for collecting. “Space Abstraction,” 1951 88.25 x 78.25", oil on canvas This painting commands the space with interconnected symbols and floating consciousnesses. A classic example of transcendentalism, and dated 1951, it stands over 7 feet tall which means it could be the largest-scale work ever created by Bisttram. Collected extensively, Bisttram belongs to many museums such as the Smithsonian, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art NYC, and New Mexico Museum of Art. Bisttram created the avant-garde Taos School of Art and the Heptagon Gallery after studying with Diego Rivera in Mexico on a Guggenheim fellowship in the early 1930s. New pieces have arrived from @mollyscarpenter! Molly is our only multi-media sculpture resident artist, making her work the only truly three-dimensional work we currently have in the gallery. Her process is unique from the traditional mediums that are used by standard painters. Keep reading to find out more about how she makes her art: “I find creating a complete artwork from raw materials extremely satisfying. In a sort of alchemy, a pile of clay, glass, paint, and gold flakes is transformed into a one-of-a-kind object that can last for generations. Each piece begins as a sculpture made out of clay. I make a mold of that sculpture, which will then become the frame. Into these molds —- which are cast once a year —- I pour hydrocal gypsum with reinforcement, incorporating the hanging mechanism. After the frame has cured for about a month, I do the patina on the frame and add any additional elements, such as stones or jewels. Once I see the completed frame, I decide what image to put inside it. I will then do the painting, assemble the mosaic, and layer on 24k gold. Although the process may seem long and laborious, time passes unnoticed by me when I work. My ideas are a compilation of images from my life, inspired by nature, cathedrals and carousels, and the elusive treasures found in my dreams.” Visit Molly’s page on our website to learn more about these new pieces. Meet Contempo Classic Featured artist, 𝘽𝙧𝙖𝙙 𝙍𝙤𝙗𝙚𝙧𝙩𝙨𝙤𝙣 Brad Robertson, born and raised in Alabama, paints with a distinctive style. It invites the mind to wander across the layers of color and texture just as the eye might wander along the horizon, looking across the water and into the depths of his Gulf Coast home. Brad has painted all throughout his life, always aiming to evoke the eternal, looking for innovative ways to combine color and texture to create multi-layered shorelines, endless horizons, and seeming portals of bold color. A direct expression of the landscape he calls home—each piece he sees as a little part of himself. Brad works with acrylics, often moving quite quickly, layering the paint on the canvas to create a sense of depth, intensity, and expansiveness. Brad finishes some pieces within months yet others require years to complete. He has to sense when a painting is ready, to look at it and just know. Brad’s art may begin as an expression of his own life or experience, but he feels it is not complete until people look at it and are able to define it in their own terms. That is when his work has accomplished its purpose. His work, whether small or large, has a way of evoking a powerful calm in all who view it. Brad lives and operates his studio in Port Richey, Florida, and his work can be found in private and corporate collections all across the United States. “When people look at my paintings and are able to define them in their own terms, I feel like my work has accomplished its purpose.
