Ernest Briggs (1923-1984) Oil on canvas, untitled (222) (1959), 51 x 36.25 inches. Custom framed in solid maple floater with a polyurethane clear coat finish. Ernest Briggs was born on December 24, 1923, in San Diego. He served in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II, stationed in Tampa, FL and then deployed to India. After the war, Briggs studied painting at the Rudolph Schaeffer School of Design in San Francisco, later enrolling at the California School of Fine Arts (now the San Francisco Art Institute). It was at the latter institution where he met and ultimately thrived under the tutelage of #clyffordstill #adreinhardt #markrothko and David Park. New York Times critic Grace Glueck wrote that the “painterly rhetoric” of his teacher Clyfford Still was a lasting influence on Briggs, which is plainly evident upon reviewing the entirety of his oeuvre. Considered a member of the second generation of Abstract Expressionists, Briggs left California for New York in 1953, where he began exhibiting at the Stable Gallery. During the 1950s, he was able to make a name for himself through his explosive and dynamic style as part of the New York City avant-garde. Briggs brought to the east coast a fresh, lively aesthetic, reflecting what was termed a “radical west coast style” that he had continued to refine since his days at the California School of Fine Arts. He participated in several Whitney Museum Annuals, and in 1956 was included in the Museum of Modern Art’s seminal exhibition “Twelve Americans,” curated by Dorothy Miller. He taught painting and sculpture at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn from 1961 until the time of his death at age 61. Today the AAPL continues our showcase of our Board of Directors, we are proud to present our President, Aki Kano. Aki Kano is a New York-based representational watercolor painter. She received her BFA from the University of Michigan’s School of Art and later followed her passion for fashion design attending the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC. Her meticulous and sensitive watercolor paintings, which consist mostly of portraits, have been accepted into prestigious juried shows in galleries worldwide, the Salmagundi Club, and museums, and have won numerous awards. Her work has been featured multiple times in magazines including Fine Art Connoisseur and American Art Collector. Aki is a Signature Member of the AAPL, an Honorary Member of the Salmagundi Club, a Juried Member of the Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club, a Juried member of the International Guild of Realism, and a member of PoetsArtists. In "Left and Right", a pair of well-worn leather boots cast brilliant shadows against a stark white wall. Fastened by their shoelaces in a poised manner, the shoes have been set aside, perhaps after a hard day's work. Amorphous red socks spill out of the tops of the boots and drape over their edges providing a hint of softness and color to the composition. . Palazzo Barberini, tempio dell’artificio barocco nonché dimora della famiglia di papa Urbano VIII, si apre al contemporaneo con la mostra “Effetto Notte: Nuovo realismo americano”: 150 opere provenienti dalla @aishtifoundation di Beirut, una delle più importanti istituzioni di arte contemporanea sulla scena internazionale, fondata 25 anni fa dall’imprenditore italo-libanese Tony Salamé e dalla moglie Elham. Operazione di innesto perfetta, che dimostra come si possa far convivere il contemporaneo e l’antico senza svilirlo. Per l’occasione sono state aperte al pubblico le sale settecesche volute da Cornelia Costanza Barberini nel 1760-70, piccoli scrigni di decorazione rococò tra i più belli di Roma. Particolarmente delicati gli accostamenti nelle sale alcova, dove tele astratte riprendono il colore degli affreschi e della boiserie, e soprattutto nel corridoio celeste, con opere video e finestre oscurate con gli stessi filtri blu un tempo usati in Libano per sfuggire al coprifuoco.
