Here's another work in progress for the upcoming City Art Gallery in June. As some of you know, my Dad died last month and this pretty much sums up my feelings. I close my eyes as I am surrounded by death trying not to see as it covers me. #illustration #pencilsketch #death #wip #gothmoth #art #sketch #portrait #portraitillustration #18thcentury

On this day in 1780, Charleston South Carolina fell into British hands under Sir Charles Cornwallis. Part of a strategy intended to rouse a supposed Loyalist majority which resided throughout the Carolinas, the fall of Charleston was a significant victory for the British. Unfortunately, the Loyalist uprising they had hoped for did not come to fruition - instead, the British found themselves harried by guerrilla fighters! At this point in the War, the British controlled both Savannah, Georgia, and now Charleston - this effectively neutralized any real colonial military presence beyond small bands of guerillas. In response, that October Major General Nathanael Greene was sent by Washington to engage Cornwallis in the South. After months of hard battles, Greene’s guerrilla hit-and-run tactics led a frustrated Cornwallis to abandon the Carolinas to invade Virginia, where he hoped to cut-off Greene’s supply lines. In the meantime, Greene continued to defeat British forces throughout the South, eventually cornering the bulk of the remaining force in Charleston where he kept them for the remainder of the war. Descriptions of “Spanish Indians” in colonial New England sources are believed to refer to people taken captive in Spanish Florida and subsequently sold into slavery. Purchased by the Reverend William Burnham (1684-1750) of Kensington, Connecticut, Peter Tusco (died 1767) entered a household that would come to include another “Spanish Indian” named Maria and the “Mulatto Boy James.” Burnham freed Tusco “for divers good causes” in 1738, by which point he was living in Southington with Burnham’s daughter Hannah (1708-1772) and her husband, the Reverend Jeremiah Curtiss (1706-1795); he remained in their service as a free man. Tusco was evidently literate, and in February of 1767 drew up a will in which he left thirteen acres of land and all moveable property to the Curtiss family. He died the following month after a seventeen-day battle with an unnamed illness that left him bedridden. Tusco’s inventory lists his wardrobe and other possessions including “a pair spectacles & case,” a Bible and a treatise on prayer, a worked pocketbook, and a silk handkerchief. The Curtiss family saw to his funeral arrangements, which included purchasing a winding sheet and coffin, digging the grave, and commissioning this gravestone. Missing for some time, the stone was recently rediscovered and today recalls free and enslaved “Spanish Indian” presence in the Farmington Valley. #vastearlyamerica #nativeamerican #floridahistory #indigenous #indigenouspeople #slavery #slaveryarchive #southingtonct #connecticutgram #ctphotographer #connecticut #18thcentury #colonialamerica #americanart #memory #taphophile #gravestone #cemeteryphotography #graveyardshift #americanhistory #handcarved #brownstone #stonecarving #inscription #death #mourning #mementomori #project_necropolis #earlyamerican #oldnewengland #earlyamerican

Not in Vain Not Unhonoured Not Forgotten 🥀 A little bit of Church Sunday at the Chapel of Bowood House. The Chapel was designed for Henry Petty-Fitzmaurice, 3rd Marquess of Lansdowne, in 1821 by C.R. Cockerell in the neo-classical style. Part of the 'Little House' at Bowood, it is entered via the Orangery through large bronzed wooden doors. The armorial stained glass was designed by Louise, wife of the 3rd Marquess. The reredos, formally an organ case believed to be by William Kent, was gifted to the 5th Marquess by Lord Revelstoke in 1899. Following the demolition of the 'Big House' in 1955, the Chapel was refurbished with the railings and marble torchères from the former staircase and dining room installed here. The organ was installed in 2004 to commemorate the millennium and the Chapel is still used by the Lansdowne family for special services. ⛪️🛡 Mounted on the wall of the Chapel is a cross in the style of a First World War battlefield grave marker in memory of Lord Charles Mercer Nairne. Second son of the 5th Marquess of Lansdowne, Lord Charles was a courtier and soldier who was killed in action on 30th October 1914. He is buried in the Ypres Town Cemetery. After his death, his widow, Lady Violet, remarried to John Jacob Astor V, Lord Astor of Hever. 🪖🪦 . #bowood #bowoodhouse #wiltshire #statelyhome #manorhouse #hall #countryhouse #historichomes #historichouse #historicarchitecture #historicbuilding #architecture #georgian #georgianarchitecture #18thcentury #18thcenturyarchitecture #robertadam #capabilitybrown #capabilitybrownlandscape #marquess #monarchy #aristocracy #church #chapel #religiousarchitecture #stainedglass #stainedglasswindow #altar #chancel #organ

Historic Williamsburg 🏘️ 300-acre living-history museum with recreated buildings from the 17th-19th centuries, including those from when Williamsburg was the capital of the Colony of Virginia. The clothing, goods, and food are made in the same manner, or as close to, as it was done in the 17th-18th century. It was also here, as well as in Boston and Lexington, that treason and rebellion was planned against the British Crown and Empire. #historic #williamsburg #virginia #livinghistory #museum #town

This fine example of a Burmese dagger (dha-hmyaung) comprises a rosewood scabbard with silver mounts; curved, single-edged steel blade; and an ivory hilt with silver mounts. The hilt represents Bilu, a fierce monster of Burmese folklore with fangs and a protruding tongue. There is another being carved on the interior, you can see his arms and legs, possibly attached to the upside-down face seen midway down the front. Two pairs of inlaid black eyes are visible on the front. Collar is of silver embellished with a band of finely solid silver. The scabbard has three bands of plain solidsilver. The end is covered in silver as is the receiving end of the scabbard. The patina of the ivory hilt suggests an eighteenth century dating. The condition is very good. There are no losses, no chips to the ivory, and no movement of the blade in the hilt. Provenance: English Gentleman retired in Thailand. Date: 18th century Culture: Burmese Medium: Ivory, steel, solid silver. Dimensions: H. 12.5 in. (32 cm); W. 1.8 in. (4.3 cm); Wt. 11.3 oz. (321 g) Classification: Knives. #18thcentury #antiques #inlovewithburmese #maynmar #londonantiques #dagger #antiqueknife #sword #ivory #Hmyaung #antiquity #lovewhatido #collection #collecting

Let’s take a moment to appreciate the stunning costuming by Dior in the ‘Marie Antoinette’ TV series! Emilia Schüle shines in meticulously crafted gowns, each a testament to Dior’s exquisite craftsmanship. I must admit, what truly captivates me are the intricate details of the corsets. Every boning, lace is a work of art. As I watch the series, I find myself drawn to how these corsets not only shape the characters’ bodies but also symbolize the societal norms and extravagance of the era. I’m quite impressed by the Dior team’s dedication to preserving historical authenticity while delivering unparalleled beauty on screen. #fashion #design #costume #marieantoinette #18thcentury #dior #corset #corsetry #fashionstyle

Explore the stories of Revolutionary women from the 1700s and beyond this #MothersDay at the Museum. This stereograph (an early form of 3-D photograph) shows Selina Gray and two of her daughters on the grounds of Arlington House during the Civil War. Enslaved by George Washington Parke Custis (Martha Washington’s grandson), Gray developed a close relationship with Parke Custis’ daughter, Mary Anna Randolph Custis Lee. When United States troops occupied Arlington House (the Custis-Lee home) at the beginning of the Civil War, Gray held the keys to the house, where the Washington “relics,” including General George Washington’s tent, were stored. She alerted army officers about the tent, which government officials removed from Arlington House to be kept safe in Washington, D.C. Gray and her husband Thornton had eight children together: Emma, Annice, Florence, Sarah, Ada, Selina, John and Harry. The Gray family experienced the United States Army’s wartime occupation of Arlington together. This stereograph was rediscovered in 2014 and is now part of the historic photograph collection at @arlingtonhousenps. 📸 Detail from Selina Norris Gray with Two of Her Children, unidentified photographer, 1861-1865, Arlington House #HowRevolutionary #AmericanRevolution #RevolutionaryWar #18thCentury #CivilWar #MuseumExhibition #PhillyMuseum
