Town Hall Portraits Connected to Slavery and the Slave Trade Hanging in the Large Ballroom of Liverpool Town Hall is the portrait of John Bolton, by Joseph Allen. The plaque currently in place (pictured below) describes him as "Colonel John Bolton (1756-1839sic), the son of an apothecary, settled in Liverpool as an apprentice to Messers Rawson and Chorley (sic) who were prominent Liverpool merchants. When war erupted again with France in 1803, Bolton raised a regiment of 800 men and equipped them at his own expense. He was painted by Joseph Allen (1770-1839), who was born in Birmingham and trained at the Royal Academy Schools. I think something more appropriate would read as follows: John Bolton was born in Ulverston. At the age of sixteen, he travelled to St Vincent as a penniless apprentice to the Liverpool cotton trading and slave owning firm, Rawlinson and Chorley. Within ten years of being in the West Indies, he had amassed a large fortune and returned to Liverpool, where he established himself as one of the town's most prominent merchants. He invested in at least 69 slaving voyages as well as owning slave plantations in the Americas. Due to his great wealth, when war broke out with the French in 1803, he was able to raise a regiment of volunteers and equip them at his own expense. As a consequence, he was given the rank of colonel although never having served in the army. Olivier Le Jeune was the first recorded person of African descent enslaved in Canada. Historians estimate Olivier was around six to nine years old when he arrived in Quebec City in 1629, likely trafficked from the African Island of Madagascar or Guinea. It was a French slave trader named David Kirke who originally enslaved Olivier and sold him to a local Quebec man named Guillaume Couillard. Several people, including Olivier Le Baillif bought and sold Olivier throughout his short life. The enslaved child was baptized in 1632 by the Jesuit priest Paul Le Jeune, who gave Olivier last name. Olivier died on May 10, 1654, with his final resting place lost to history. On May 10, 2022, the Government of Canada designated Olivier Le Jeune as a person of national historical significance, and the following year, Parks Canada unveiled a bronze plaque at Cartier-Brébeuf National Historic Site, honouring Olivier. Olivier Le Jeune's story is an important part of Canadian history, which highlights the long and cruel history of slavery in our country, which did not spare children of its horrors. From the time Olivier set foot on Canadian shores, it would take another two hundred years before The Slavery Abolition Act ended the practice of slavery in 1834. 📚Unveiling Our Community: NEGRO WOMAN, 12£ - The oldest entry in our database, and the very first person on our 56-foot cloth banner filled with the names of the enslaved, is dated 1689: “Negro Woman, 12 pounds.” An original proprietor of Bristol, Mr. Oliver, sold his share of lands to Nathan Hayman. - SlaveVoyages.org estimates that during a 350 year span, 1525-1866, 12.5 million enslaved people were taken from Africa to be transported to the Americas via The Middle Passage. - 🌊10.7 million survived that two-month voyage. On this day in 1800, John Brown was born in Torrington, Connecticut. He was an evangelical preacher and a prominent leader in the American abolitionist movement in the decades preceding the Civil War. First reaching national prominence in the 1850s for his radical abolitionism and fighting in Bleeding Kansas, Brown was captured, tried, and executed by the Commonwealth of Virginia for a raid and incitement of a slave rebellion at Harpers Ferry in 1859. “You know what John Brown did?
