The Department of Buildings' Demolition Bureau responds to complaints generated by the 311 system reported by residents, community groups, Aldermanic offices, as well as the Chicago Police Department. The bureau responds to complaints of vacant and open buildings. Buildings that are abandoned and scenes of criminal activity are inspected and then referred to the Circuit court system. The process consists of identifying a responsible party who will secure, rehab, sell or raze the structure. If these standards cannot be met, the Demolition bureau continues to inspect the building throughout the court case. In some cases, the court may order the premises to be properly secured, or ultimately demolished. This is on the City of Chicago website.. May is Mental Health awareness month For the past year, I have been protesting outside in front of City Hall because my family's building was illegally demolished by the City of Chicago Building Department, Aldermen in the 17th Ward (both past and present), and other City and Cook County individuals. In August 2023, I decided to attend committee meetings to express my concerns through public comments, hoping that the Mayor of Chicago or one of his staff would sit down with me or my family to review all the paperwork.Together, we started attending meetings on both the Cook County and City sides to express how City and Cook County officials are stealing and illegally demolishing properties without compensation. I'm watching the City and Cook County prey on Black seniors’ properties and land. It's a fact that no lawyers will take our cases, and not everyone has the knowledge or strength to represent themselves. This is modern-day Jim Crow, and the Black representation in Chicago politics is not helping us. The only reason Illinois hasn’t turned into a Republican state is because of Black Chicago. Thus, not receiving any help from the Black legislative body is more depressing than anything.. Since September of last year, there have been significant changes to the format of City Council meetings under the Brandon Johnson administration. These changes range from turning meetings into ticketed events to confining constituents behind plexiglass on the third floor, and even restricting access to the chambers to invite-only attendees, to now us standing in the hallway before committee meetings, between 15-30 minutes after the meetings are suppose to start, in a makeshift box made with Stanchions, like we are animals.. all because they don't want four people to speak at the meetings about the issues happening in the Black community such as the Local government elected officials with the help of the corrupt clergy, and private developers steal Black people properties, speaking about how this democratic town is doing nothing to help with our issues, because the Democratic Party been doing this, especially in CHICAGO.. they hate when we get to that mic and we call out the elected officials, while they're trying to blame it on Chicago Police and the SGT of Arms changing the rules.. no it's the ALDERMEN/WOMEN.. This behavior is unethical, unfair, and unconstitutional. Attending public meetings should not be this difficult, and it will not be. I am committed to doing whatever it takes to address this issue. If it is not resolved by the next meeting next week, we will take further action. We are not animals; we pay their salaries, vote these people in, and can ensure they are not re-elected if necessary. By November 15th, 2023, Chicago had already spent over $420 million. I went to three meetings yesterday. One of them was the Committee on Finance. I made a point to play the voicemail left by the Department of Law from the City of Chicago on my mom's voicemail, just so Alderman David Moore of the 17th Ward could hear it. It's about time he took some accountability and sat down with my family. Alderman David Moore is a politician who serves on the Chicago City Council. He represents the 17th Ward, which includes parts of the South Side of Chicago. He's known for his advocacy on issues like education, public safety, and economic development in his community. Alderman David Moore seems to be quite the elusive figure. My mother's been trying to meet with him for five years now, but he's been avoiding her. It's frustrating, especially since our building was illegally demolished in his ward, and he hasn't reached out to offer any help. Until he starts listening to he figures out how to resign or find the time to meet with my moms.. I'll just keep advocating for my mother at City Hall. the housing and property crisis unfolding across America, particularly in the City of Chicago. It appears that not enough attention is being given to this pressing issue, which has dire consequences for countless families like mine. My family has been directly impacted by the corruption and negligence of the City of Chicago. Our commercial/mixed-use property, which represented our generational wealth, was illegally demolished by the city. Despite our efforts to seek justice, we have faced continuous stonewalling and obstruction from city officials, including Aldermen, commissioners, Cook County President, and lawyers. For the past six months, we have been awaiting a response from the judge in the Northern District federal court (2023 cv 6104) regarding the illegal demolition of our building and the lack of compensation from the city. Alderman David Moore of the 17th Ward has been complicit in this injustice, failing to represent the best interests of his constituents. Furthermore, during the course of our legal battle, it has come to light that my mother was also a victim of insurance fraud perpetrated by Dennis Rafael, an insurance claim adjuster hired by the City of Chicago. Mr. Rafael’s actions constitute a gross violation of my mother’s rights under the 14th Amendment and exemplify bad faith insurance practices. Despite our efforts to seek redress through the legal system, we have encountered numerous roadblocks, including false assertions of expired statute of limitations by Mr. Rafael. It is clear that there is a systemic issue of corruption and injustice within the city, which must be addressed urgently. I'm not tied to any political party, but it bothers me that important Black leaders don't seem to be focused on helping our communities. Even though our neighborhoods are struggling, they always support the Democratic Party, which I don't understand. I think it's time for us to think differently about how we vote and the two-party system. Illegal evictions are rampant in Black communities, with neither the mayor nor city council addressing this crisis. The Daley Center witnesses evictions without rental assistance, compounding the issue. Meanwhile, over $1 billion was allocated in the past year, yet initiatives like Bring Home Chicago have failed to adequately assist families. With $200 million earmarked for homelessness last year and $250 million in this year’s budget, the whereabouts of this funding remain unclear. The Chicago Housing Authority possesses $1.2 billion in funding, yet affordable housing in our communities often serves as a front for money laundering. When kids in CPS don’t have a stable place to live, it’s hard for them to focus on school. In 2023, over $200 million was set aside in the budget to help homeless people.
