Image Info: Rail Tankers 3 Moccasin, Montana Stationed on what was originally known as the Great Northern rail line, these parked tanker cars are a common sight along the modern rail network that stretches across the Great Plains. Rail freight accounts for roughly 40% of all long distance freight in the U.S. - More than any other mode of transportation. Of note: The town of Moccasin, Montana (population 23) is located along what is known as the Highline, just a stones throw from the Canadian border. Moccasin began as a homestead community with its post office being built in the 1880s and then its first hotel in 1905. The town continued to struggle through the mid 20th century as it was repeatedly devastating by wildfires that struck the area in 1916, 1919, 1922, and then in 1955. Yesterday, I posted a video about Mother's Day. It resonated a few people, and seemed to encourage several. In case you missed it, here's an abridged transcript: Mother’s day has a fastincating history. Social movements have this predictable trend they follow from something powerful and transformative to something safe and commerical. The powers that be have this trick of memorializing figures to make them less threatening. MLK was one of the most hated men in America, but as soon as he died, we reduced him to a street name and a holiday... Mother’s day follows a similar trajectory. In 1870 Julia Ward Howe called for a “Mother’s Day for Peace.” She wrote: Arise, then... women of this day! Arise, all women who have hearts, whether our baptism be that of water or of tears! Say firmly: We will not have great questions decided by irrelevant agencies... Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn all that we have been able to teach them of charity, mercy and patience. We, women of one country, will be too tender of those of another country to allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs. From the bosom of the devastated earth a voice goes up with our own. It says: Disarm! Howe’s version of Mother’s Day never took off, but 36 years later, the daughter of one of her partners—Anne Jarvis—wanted to honor her mother’s work, so she called for a non-political, upside-down version of the holiday where children honor their mothers. THIS one took off. Almost immediatly, though, Jarvis tried to roll the whole thing back—appalled at how quickly companies turned it into something commercial and empty. A few years later, she was even arrested for protesting candy and flower retailers. So this year, as Hallmark is selling cards and churches are pushing this prescriptive image of mothers, remember how this whole thing started— and that the powers that be don’t always handle threats by wiping them out, but by pretending to honor them. #MothersDay #History #Mothersdayforpeace #Peace

136 anos da abolição da escravatura no Brasil. Esse monumento é uma homenagem e um memorial dos escravizados que trabalharam na Real Fábrica de Pólvora da Estrela, transferida por Dom Pedro I do Jardim Botânico em 1824 para Raiz da Serra. Nas dependências da fábrica da Estrela, no período que compreende de 1830 e 1864 trabalharam em sua maior parte os "africanos emancipado" ou "negro de prêmio", que eram escravizados livres, que recebiam salário, mas possuía uma situação ambígua: eram livres numa sociedade onde a maioria dos seus irmãos eram escravos. Nas oficinas de pólvora eram serventes, e alguns de destaque no trabalho chegavam ao cargo de mestre e de contra-mestres. LAST SPACE? - ST ANDREWS - SKETCHING WORKSHOPS I will be leading another sketching workshop on Sunday 19th May £65 per person including tea/coffee and scone, drawing the buildings and places around us. Message me if interested. But we won’t draw this scene because it’s a sketch I did a while back in Dufftown of one of its many distilleries. This was drawn in a @artfulbox watercolour pad using some of their acrylic ink. At the workshop I will encourage people to draw straight to pen and to be spontaneous and will try to get everyone to draw at least 6 scenes by the end of the day. We will start at 10am have a break and finish at 4.30pm. After the British forces defeated the Italian army in Eritrea in 1941 at the Battle of Keren, Eritrea was placed under British military administration until Allied forces could determine its fate. Several Italian-built infrastructure projects and industries were dismantled and removed to Kenya as war reparations. Today 13th May in #ancientrome we have the 3rd and last #Lemuralia - after those of the 9th and 11th. All of these very private family days in which #temples were shut and #weddings not celebrated. A day to cleanse the household of evil and restless spirits. Walking barefoot, chanting ritual words, throwing black beans over your shoulder in hope the evil demons would take the beans rather than your own soul. During May we would also go to family graves and celebrate a meal together, bedecking it with roses (“Rosalia”) and/or violets (“Violaria”). Some time during May-midJune the military would celebrate their own regimental insignia with the Rosalia Signorum (we might post this 31st May). It is worth using this occasion to look around at our own modern customs. Christian civilisation adopted and transformed many of the ancient Roman religious customs, leaving relics and trails of them throughout the liturgical year. Madonnas at street corners in place of the Lares. Wine at the altar. The Easter stations of the cross similar to the Argei stations. The pontifex Maximus title for the high priest (the Pope) and so on. Many of the funerary symbols were also adopted: urns, altars, obelisks, broken columns and so on. Just as ancestral spirits lived on yet remained hidden for #roman families, Roman religious practices live on around us today.
