📚 The writerly pleasure of having readers engage with your story is hard to beat! 🤯 Although my novel’s based on a real person, it's kind of mind-blowing I MADE UP all those 89,000+ words. (Plus the many thousands of words in my “Cuts” folders, haha!) 🧠 I imagined people, places & events — and words from my brain transmitted meaning into other people’s brains. Those readers then imagined people, places & events, creating images with their own slant & spin. It’s a truly amazing phenomenon! That, for me, is the biggest joy of writing! 🥰 ✒️ I’ve been incredibly lucky to have wonderful, helpful writers in my two writing groups who have given me feedback on individual scenes & chapters. 📖 And I’ve now received thoughtful, helpful feedback from alpha readers who kindly took the time to read the whole novel from beginning to end. It’s truly an honour & I’m very thankful ❤️ 😬 I’m both excited & somewhat daunted by the next stage. When I need to get control of material, I revert to good old-fashioned paper. I’ve compiled my alpha readers’ feedback (from documents they sent me, from emails & Facebook messages) into documents for each of them. 📝 Here’s my plan: I’ll go through all the feedback, slowly & carefully, highlighting parts & asking follow-up questions if I need to. Next, I’ll decide what changes I want to make & add them to my novel to-do list. Then, I’ll decide which order I’ll tackle the changes (because some changes will necessitate other changes, some of which will be BIG & have ramifications throughout the novel). 💪 Then I’ll roll up my sleeves & get it done! 📘 My novel will be so much better once I’ve incorporated this feedback. Read about these historical photographs 👇🏼 Slide 1 In 1811 David Stuart of the Pacific Fur Company traveled the Okanagan. He is the first recorded white man to see the Valley. He established a route, later to be known as the Brigade trail through the Valley to Kamloops. Over this trail passed large trains of men and horses, bringing goods in and furs out. Slide 2 The Lakeview Hotel built in 1892, stood on present site of Caravel Motel. A handsome building, shining whitely in the sun as the passengers of the Aberdeen and Okanagan steamed into Kelowna dock. Ranch hands and workers raced down the main street of Kelowna on Saturday night, anxious to wash away the week’s dust from their throat. Tradition had it, “last man to the bar pays.” Lakeview Hotel and Palace Hotel had the same rates which ran, Boarders $1.00 per day, Tourists $1.50, Single meals .50 cents. They were outraged when the Royal Hotel announced that its rates would be, Boarders $20.00 to $25.00 per month, .25 cents per single meal, saying it was a cutrate operation and bad for the town’s image. Slide 3 The first Kelowna Regatta was held in 1906. This consisted of canoe and boat races, swimming, diving, and water oriented events. Soon competition with other towns in the Okanagan began. In time, towns as far away as Vancouver (even before the road link) came to the annual event. Slide 4-5 By 1904 the potential of the land was being recognized. May 9, 1943. . The USS Robalo (SS-273), a Gato-class submarine, launched at Manitowoc Shipbuilding Co. in Wisconsin on May 9, 1943. The sub served three patrols in the Pacific before it was sunk by a mine off Balabac Island on July 26, 1944. The Robalo’s wreckage was found in May 2019 in the Balabac Strait at a depth of 230 feet. Lacy Christie (shown in this circa 1860s photo) survived Cherokee Removal. He left his home in Tennessee in fall of 1838 and arrived in Indian Territory in January 1839. His wife, Betsy, died en route, leaving him to raise their 13 children alone. Lacy was the father of Watt Christie, the father of Ned Christie – who was killed in 1892 by a US Marshals posse. May 29, 1944 In the foreground is U.S. sniper Pfc. Edward J. Foley, Co 'G', 143rd Infantry, 36th Infantry Division cleaning his Springfield 1903A4 rifle, Near Velletri, Lazio, Italy. Bill Gorman, a veteran who served with Foley stated "Foley soon realized being a sniper was not a good career" It brought too much fire to him. Gorman also stated that "the 5 shot 1903A4 bolt sniper rifle - with a 4 power scope was a waste" Foley swapped it for an M1 Garand and took the helmet camo off. On the 18th of May the 143rd Regiment sailed from the port of Pozzuoli near Naples and closed in at the Anzio beach head on the following day. On the morning of May 23d, the Regiment jumped off in an attack to break out of the beach head and entered the line on the road to Rome near the town of Velletri. The Division, in a daring maneuver, sent the 142d Infantry and the 143 Infantry from the left flank squarely across the Division front under cover of darkness and the two regiments infiltrated to the rear of Velletri, up a 2,000-foot peak before the Germans realized what had happened. With the capture of the hills in rear of Velletri, the town folded and the race to Rome was on. Charging through the Alban Hills, the regiment arrived in the outskirts of Rome about 4 p.m. on the afternoon of June 4th, 1944. (Nb: Foley came from 10 Odile St., Methuen, Massachusetts. In 1894, local sheriff and entrepreneur Seth Bullock built with his partner, Sol Star, the three-story Bullock Hotel after another downtown fire in Deadwood. The brick building took two years to complete but was quickly known as the city’s finest and convenient to the Grand Island and Wyoming Central train station, which had been operating passenger service to the town since 1891. Today, the three-story Bullock is the “Jewel of Downtown” Deadwood with 63 rooms and suites. Bully, the hotel’s restaurant is named in honor of Bullock’s good friend, Theodore Roosevelt. . . . Samuel Langhorne Clemens grew up on the Mississippi River’s banks and spent his adolescence and early adulthood working on riverboats, where he wrote several of his novels. Even his pen name, Mark Twain, was derived from a riverside phrase that refers to a river depth of two fathoms or deeper. He even chose the Mississippi River as the setting for his most renowned literary masterpiece, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Twain was a writer, essayist, lecturer, and humorist who was renowned for works such as The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, A Connecticut Yankee in King Authors’ Court, and The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County. He was also a comedian and speaker. Mark Twain was born in 1835, only a few months after the arrival of Halley’s Comet, and he was fond of joking that he had come in with the comet and would go out with it as well. This is the image that started it all. Bernie Zelitch, by Annie Powell’s Founder and Director, came across this photo while searching for the perfect “ghost” to accompany a music video project. As a former journalist, Bernie was determined to identify who the photographer was. He eventually found Annie through an old newspaper ad that advertised the photography studio she co-owned with her husband, John. Bernie was then able to connect with Annie’s descendents. Some of them grew up in the home on Harris Ave in Lowell where Annie spent her final three years. It is this home that held Annie’s final effects —including photographs. Her name is Curina Mello. She married Frank Cortez about a year after this photo was taken. The European elections of 6-9 June 2024 are the tenth European election. The first European election took place on 7-10 June 1979. However, it should not be forgotten that if we have direct elections today, it is also thanks to the contribution of the women and men of the European federalist organisations who have fought for years for direct voting as an important element of democracy. For the European federalists, the battle for direct elections meant that the European Parliament could also become a (de facto) constituent assembly legitimised by the people. In fact, a few years later the European Parliament voted by a large majority for the proposed reform of the Treaties - the so-called Spinelli Project. Spinelli Project, later rejected by the member states - which, had it been adopted, would have immediately allowed the creation of a european federation in year 1980. In 2023, for the second time in its history, the European Parliament voted for a Treaty reform proposal that would give the EU many federal powers and that has not yet been discussed by the EU Council. The next European Parliament will have to take up this legacy and continue this battle. A group of German Luftwaffe Signal Corps soldiers (kradmelders/despatch riders), treat themselves to a beer on a terrace in the abandoned Dutch city of Breda (Northern Brabant, The Netherlands). May 1940 Two days after the German invasion in the Netherlands, in the early morning of the 10th of May 1940, a massive evacuation of the city of Breda in the southern part of the Netherlands, took place. Breda threatened to end up between the front lines of the advancing Germans and French. The approximately 50,000 inhabitants were ordered to evacuate the city on Whit-Monday the 12th of May and most of them started walking in the direction of Antwerp, Belgium. The inhabitants of Breda ended up in different places, some even as far as France, the Pyrenees and northern Spain! A low point during the evacuation is the bombing of the school in Sint-Niklaas, Belgium. On 17 May 1940 a large group of refugees was housed in a girls' school in Sint-Niklaas. The Germans bombed the school on the Gasmeterstraat on that day and 51 refugees from Breda died along with dozens of Belgians. French troops came from Belgium to Breda to help defending the city, but never reached it. In retrospect, the evacuation had not been necessary: there was no fighting in Breda. The German occupiers used the large number of military buildings in the city to house soldiers and personnel for the Fliegerhorst (airforce base) Gilze-Rijen, soon to be one of the largest airfields in Europe during WW2.
