Tonight, as on every Friday in the summer, I joined the social paddle kayak tour at @jerichobeachkayak, and we experienced something incredible. I was in the casual group, while the fast-paced group was far ahead of us. In the distance, we saw them sitting still in the water. One of the instructors informed us that they had spotted a whale. We quickly paddled to catch up and catch a glimpse. Then, we saw it blow. Every now and then, the whale surfaced. It was unmistakably a humpback whale. We sat in our kayaks, mesmerized by its movements and the sound of its breath. Suddenly, it changed direction and started heading towards us. My heart raced as I watched the whale approach. We believe it might have got as close as 50m to us. I was both terrified and amazed. The instructors told us to stay calm and move closer together. We kept a close eye on the giant, and I’m sure it was watching us too. Gently, it swam around us, and we slowly made our way closer to shore, putting some distance between us and this majestic sea creature. I was too nervous to take close-up shots, but I managed to capture a few pictures of its blow. This was by far the most magical moment of my life (so far). I am still shaking and have goosebumps. 2. Bluff Point State Park Groton. OK ,this park has a lot to offer! There are plenty of wooded trails or easy paths through the woods. I’d rate them easy, but not borning. There’s plenty of trails to choose from. Many run all the way to Haley Farm in Mystic. Congestion varies up quite a bit depending on the time of year. We’ve been here in the fall/ winter when it’s overcast and cool and there aren’t many people at any given time. Right now it’s crazy busy so no off leash time for the boys. School groups bring kids, there are hobby fishers, mountain bikers and lots of people with leashed dogs. We stuck to the main trail today which goes out to a beach that dogs aren’t allowed on from April to August. The whole walk there is along the water so if you want to let your dog cool off there’s plenty of spots to do so, just not the beach. The main path is 1.5 miles to get to the beach, and just past that is a view from a small cliff over the water that lets you see for miles in every direction. Bring water for your dog, there’s no fresh bodies of water. There is an old school water pump of fresh water but you need a bowl or container to fill. The #LongBeach Community Development Department will be throwing a community open house and setting up an online #survey to receive feedback on ideas for the city’s #downtown and #shoreline areas. These dual initiatives, the Downtown Plan and Downtown Shoreline Vision Plan, are part of an outreach campaign from the City to simultaneously raise awareness and get community insight. Downtown Plan: The purpose of updating the guidelines for the Downtown Plan is to have a more defined focus on future investment and equitable housing opportunities in downtown Long Beach. The feedback received from the open house will be used to inform the next update of the Downtown Plan, which is anticipated to come out this summer. The borders of the Downtown Plan are defined as the Los Angeles River to the west, Alamitos Avenue to the east, Anaheim Street to the north and Ocean Boulevard to the south. The open house will occur Saturday, May 18 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Billie Jean King Main Library, located at 200 W. For the last four years, Stephanie and I have been starting our RVing summers in the Scarborough, Maine area. During each of these trips, I have had opportunity to capture colorful sunset photos from the shores of the Nonesuch River where it meets the Atlantic. However, this year's trip was different. The overcast skies and rain prevented me from taking my usual colorful sunset photos. Despite that, I was able to capture a hint of color in this image looking southeast over the river basin. Although I have taken blue hour photos from this spot before, it had always been after a spectacular sunset. 1: Oswegatchie Hills Nature Preserve. If you’re an avid hiker I would classify this as an easy hike. Newbies may find it moderate. Dogs are welcome but must be leashed. We’ve encountered other dog friendly hikers who don’t mind off leash pups, but beware there are complainers if your dog is off leash. If your dog doesn’t have good recall or goes far ahead often play it safe. The trails here are mostly wide and clearly marked. You can do shorter loops or cross trails and make it a longer hike. There’s a quarry with neat places to sit and have lunch in the sun. There are plenty of small streams with clean flowing water for pups to cool off in or drink. While in the area if you plan to make a day of it Niantic has loads to offer! This hike is right in the middle of one of Connecticuts beautiful shoreline towns. Just down the road is the @bookbarnniantic . One of three locations they have locally that you can buy or sell pre-loved books at. They have thousands of books but don’t be overwhelmed, the knowledgeable staff will guide you around the whimsically laid out property. They have resident cats snoozing and perusing the property, and goats that you can buy snacks for to feed. If you didn’t bring lunch you can head further down West Main Street from the Book Barn and hit up @dekes_bagels . They make baked goods, breakfast, lunch and even smoothies. I had the best breakfast sandwich of my life there 🤤BEC squared.
