Repost from @talking.with.talya It is beyond irresponsible of you to talk about the aftermath of the Israel-Hamas war WITHOUT addressing the cause of it… context matters. Israel did NOT want this war, and did NOT start this war. Hamas did. Do you really expect a country to look the other way and not respond when terrorists mass murder, rape, torture, and kidnap our people? What would YOU want your country and government to do if YOUR loved ones were the victims and/ or survivors of October 7th??? Genuine question. I promise you the answer is NOT “nothing.” Israel will continue to defend herself and her people against any terrorists who want us eliminated. It’s been like 4000+ years and we’re still here, bitch. And guess what? We’re here to stay. Cry about it. But don’t lie about it. The Vulcan salute made famous by Star Trek can also be found on Jewish gravestones, Torah curtains, Jewish art and ancient amulets. What's the connection? In Judaism, the hand gesture is associated with the blessing recited by the priests (kohanim) in the First and Second Temple. While the Temple is no longer standing, descendants of kohanim continue to make the Priestly Blessing today in synagogues around the world. Leonard Nimroy, the Jewish actor who played Mr. Spock in the sci-fi TV series, revealed in his 1975 autobiography that he had suggested the Vulcans adapt the Priestly Blessing gesture after witnessing the blessing in a synagogue as a child. Learn more about Birkat Hakohanim by clicking our link in bio! #judaism #birkathakohanim #priestlyblessing #kohen #jewishtraditions #jewishcommunity #jewishlearning #jewishhistory #startrek #vulcansalute #jewishpeople

Friendly Neighborhood Ragman Ragman, No. 8, from 1992 Before I get into the story, I would like to take a little time to gush over Ragman. I love everything about this series, the art, the 9 panel layout appears so simple and formulaic until you realize the different ways it's used. The story is wonderful with ties to jewish history and culture (Ragman is one of the few Jewish superheroes) and comments on the effects of poverty and the necessity of community. On top of all that, the Ragman is just an interesting hero with an interesting set of powers. In the last issue the Batman finally meets the Ragman, so that means in this issue they have to fight. Ragman has a plan, and for it he needs Batman. During their fight the Ragman lures Batman deeper into the ghetto, into his neighborhood. As they continue to fight on rooftops and alleyways, the Ragman remembers the people of this place that he has saved from thugs, fires, and cold, he calls to them. The neighborhood hears a silent cry in the night, someone is in trouble, someone needs them, all of them, and they show up. Without knowing it was the Ragman that called to them, they unite around him, he has been their hero, their guardian, their protector, their hope, and they will defend their hope together. Batman can see he was wrong about the Ragman, and that there are parts of Gotham that don't feel the influence of superheroes. Thing is, this neighborhood no longer needs Ragman, they now possess the strength and unity to look out for each other, and so the Ragman disappears. Betty tells Batman it's not that he ain't a hero, it's that Ragman taught them they could all be heroes, and as the two walk she quotes JFK (her old boss) "Ask not what can do for you, but what you can do for your country" The Ragman hears these words, and everything becomes clear. Rory Regan appears in the Latin Quarter of New Orleans, a neighborhood thick with poverty, crime, and trouble, a neighborhood that could use a Ragman. #TalesFromThePile #DC #DCcomics #DCuniverse #DCEU #DCcollector #DCcollection #Ragman #90sComics #90scomicbooks #Batman #JFK #NewOrleans #LatinQuarter #ComicBook #ComicbookCollection #ComicBookClub

Who Knew It Was Jewish? Episode 35: Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, Sears, Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Bergdorf Goodman Macy’s was already established as one of the oldest department stores in the United States, at over 40 years old, when the Macy family sold the business in 1895 to German-Jewish immigrants Nathan and Isidor Straus. Bloomingdale’s, the other New York department store chain to quickly grow to a national scale, was also founded by a Jewish duo — the father-son team of Benjamin and Lyman Bloomingdale. Sears has its roots in the traditional department store, but it was co-owner Julius Rosenwald’sinnovation that led to Sears-Roebuck shaping America — not through physical stores, but through catalog shopping. Rosenwald introduced the mail-order catalog concept to Sears-Roebuck, which led to a greater accessibility of clothes, household appliances and even houses themselves (some Sears houses are still standing today) across rural America, nearly a century before online shopping. American Jews also made names for themselves in the world of high-end, luxury department stores — from Saks Fifth Avenue to Neiman-Marcus to Bergdorf Goodman, all of which had Jewish founders. #WhoKnewItWasJewish #WKIWJ #WKIWJewish #SimplyHappyMarlo #Jewish #JewishCreator #JewishHistory #JewishBackground #JewishInventor #JewishBrands #JewishToys #JewishCharacters #JewishCompanies #JewishFood #JewishItems #JewishProducts #AllThingsJewish #foryou #Macys #Bloomingdales #Sears #NeimanMarcus #SaksFifthAvenue #BergdorfGoodman

☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ #spiritualité #jewitch #cimetiere #inspiration #symbolism #symbolisme #stoneslovers #jewishtradition #stonespower #eclecticwitch #jewishhistory

MAP FORUM PRESENTS: Intimate Affairs: Family, Commerce, and Judaism in the 18th-Century Mediterranean ~ Presented by Francesca Bregoli ~ Tuesday, 14 May 2024 at 5pm EST/11pm CET ~ Join via the link in our bio! How did trans-regional Jewish merchants sustain a sense of familial and commercial obligation over time and space? In this talk, I will explore this question drawing primarily from the correspondence (1776-1790) of Tunis-based Joseph Franchetti to his sons and associates in Livorno and Smyrna. We will consider specific strategies employed to preserve a feeling of familial commitment and to educate younger relatives, alongside parental fears regarding the risks that young Jewish merchants living away from home could pose to a family’s reputation and credit – above all, conversion to Christianity. Francesca Bregoli holds the Joseph and Oro Halegua Chair in Greek and Sephardic Jewish Studies and is Associate Professor of History at Queens College and the CUNY Graduate Center. Her research focuses on early modern Italian and Sephardic Jewish history. She is the author of "Mediterranean Enlightenment: Livornese Jews, Tuscan Culture, and Eighteenth-Century Reform" (2014), and co-editor of "Connecting Histories: Jews and Their Others in Early Modern Europe" (2019) and "Italian Jewish Networks from the Seventeenth to the Twentieth Centuries: Bridging Europe and the Mediterranean" (2018). Saul Steinberg (1914-1999), who became one of America’s most beloved artists, was especially reserved about his first thirty years: a Romanian Jew who was forced to leave his increasingly anti-Semitic country, he studied architecture in Italy, where he began his artistic career, only to be forced out once more by the racial laws of his adopted country. He ended up in the US and within a few months found himself in the thick of war as a propaganda artist working for Morale Operations division of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS). #salon #rahelvarnhagen #jewishlife #diaspora #jüdischesleben #kulturberlin #synagogepestalozzistrasse #issacharbenryback #jewishhistory #jewishculture #jewishculturalhistory #Geschichte #varnhagenstoechter #zeitfürbücher @mitzwa_express @synagogepestalozzistrasse @meidlerwaks

Temple Emanu-El, located on New York City’s Upper East Side, is a beacon of Jewish history and architectural grandeur. Founded in 1845, it is one of the oldest Reform congregations in the United States. The current majestic building, completed in 1929, stands as a testament to the congregation’s enduring legacy. Designed in the Romanesque Revival style with Byzantine influences, its awe-inspiring sanctuary can seat over 2,500 people. Beyond its architectural beauty, Temple Emanu-El has been a center for Jewish worship, education, and community service for nearly two centuries, continuing to enrich the cultural fabric of New York City. #architecture #archi #archidaily #architecturephotography #architecturelovers #archilovers #archilover #architecture_hunter #gentrification #urban #streetphotography #streetart #architecturehistory #architecturalhistory #synagogue #synagogues #synagoguesoftheworld #jews #jew #jewish #judaism #history #jewishhistory #newyork #newyorkhistory #nyc #nycarchitecture #nychistory #americanhistory #iloveny

11 Iyar - Judah P. Benjamin - 1884 On this day in 1884, Judah P. Benjamin passed away in Paris, France. Benjamin was the first Jewish US Senator not to renounce his faith to gain the position. He was later the first Jew to hold a Cabinet position in North America, serving as the Attorney General, Secretary of War and then Secretary of State of the Confederate States of America. As Secretary of State, he worked to get Great Britain and France to recognize the Confederacy. His efforts ultimately failed. In the waning days of the Civil War as the Confederate cause was gasping its last breath, Benjamin advocated for freeing the slaves and arming them as soldiers, a proposal that was only partially accepted and followed. When President Jefferson Davis fled the capital of Richmond, VA, Benjamin went with him. Davis was caught and imprisoned. Benjamin fled to England where he became a successful Barrister. While Benjamin was born a Sefardic Jew in London, it appears that he was mainly unobservant during his adult life. After the war, Benjamin was blamed for the fall of the South as the “Brains of the Confederacy.” In the North, they considered him “the Evil Genius.” Knowing he was villainized by all Americans, he destroyed all personal records before he passed away, and asked that not even an article be written about him after his death. Due to his role in the Confederacy, for generations, Jewish Historians avoided even mentioning him. He is definitely one of the most misunderstood and complicated personalities in Jewish History. The fun thing about museums is when they install new temporary or permanent exhibits. Today, I headed over to the Academy Museum to check out the new permanent exhibition, "Hollywoodland: Jewish Founders and the Making of a Movie Capital." It's a relatively small but excellent show narrating the Jewish origins of the major studios such as Columbia, Warner, MGM, Paramount, and RKO. When you enter, there's a fascinating map and screen display narrating the origins and growth of the early entertainment industry in Los Angeles. Not always easy to follow both the map (which shows studio and filming locations) and the screen on the wall (showing film clips and still pictures of early producers, actors, studio buildings, and city locations), but it's engaging and presents a concise timeline of the inception of filmmaking in what is now greater Los Angeles. This picture shows 1918, when Sessue Hayakawa lived at Castle Glengarry in Hollywood, which later served as a synagogue for Temple Israel of Hollywood. It's definitely an exhibit worth checking out. #Hollywood #Hollywoodland #HollywoodHistory #FilmHistory #JewishHistory #JewishHollywood #EarlyFilmIndustry #SessueHayakawa #AcademyMuseum #AcademyMuseumofMotionPictures #LosAngeles #LosAngelesCA

⚠️ TRIGGER WARNING ⚠️ Dwight D. Eisenhower, Commanding General of the Allied Forces that defeated Nazi Germany declared after seeing the concentration camps: “Get it all on record now - get the films - get the witnesses - because somewhere down the road of history some bastard will get up and say that this never happened.” Yesterday I went to the Nova Festival Exhibit to bare witness with my own eyes the atrocities that happened in Israel on 10/7th, a day that will live in infamy for the Jewish nation. I watched the videos recorded on the phones of the festival attendees. The video footage shot by the terrorists themselves. I heard the conversations between loved ones as the ravers said their goodbyes to their families. The recording of people begging for their lives before hearing gun shots. I felt it deep in my soul. It blows my mind that even with all of the evidence recorded on video, some people will still deny the events that took place or justify it as some sort of meaningful resistance. Over 1000 innocent men, women, children, and elderly were brutally assaulted and murdered just for being Jewish and taken hostage. We are led to believe that history could not repeat itself and yet I look around me today only to testify that indeed it can and it did. 10/7th was nothing more than a genocide of the Jewish people. The dehumanization of the Jewish suffering after is nothing more than antisemitism at its finest on display. As a civil, educated society we must do better in recognizing hate when we see it and standing up to it, in all forms. #israel #oct7 #novafestival #gaza #amisraelchai #timesofisrael #israeltoday #jewishhistory

Tzfat is my favorite place in Israel. I’ve been visiting since I’m a teenager and during my university days, i came up here every other weekend for over a year. These days, I don’t get to visit too much. Tzfat holds a special place in Jewish history, particularly in the context of Kabbalah, the Jewish mystical tradition. During the 16th century, following the expulsion of Jews from Spain and Portugal, many prominent Jewish mystics and scholars found refuge in Safed, transforming it into the epicenter of Jewish mystical study and thought. Figures such as Rabbi Isaac Luria, known as the Ari, and Rabbi Joseph Caro, the author of the Shulchan Aruch, were instrumental in establishing Safed as a city of profound spiritual and religious importance. The teachings and practices developed in Safed during this period had a lasting impact on Jewish thought and are still influential in contemporary Jewish life and spirituality. This is one of my favorite synagogues here, the Abuhav. It’s a monumental edifice steeped in the rich tapestry of Jewish mysticism and heritage. Believed to have been originally conceptualized by the 15th-century Spanish kabbalist, Rabbi Isaac Abuhav, its actual construction occurred during the 16th century, a period when the city emerged as a central hub of Kabbalistic study. The synagogue is renowned for its beautiful interior, which includes a bimah and Holy Ark purportedly designed by Rabbi Abuhav himself. According to tradition, the synagogue’s Torah scroll, written by Abuhav, was brought from Spain following the expulsion of the Jews in 1492 and has survived multiple earthquakes, serving as a symbol of resilience and divine protection. #synagogue #synagogues #synagoguesoftheworld #jews #jew #jewish #judaism #jewishhistory #insta_israel #instagram_israel #ig_israel #all_israel #instaisrael #tsfat #safed #torah #torahstudy #torahportion #holy #holyplace #holyplaces #israel #israel_best #israeligram #israel_times #israel_daily #israel_only #israel🇮🇱 #israel_hdr #israeli_moments
