Today, on Yom Hazikaron, the Day of Remembrance, our hearts are heavy as we honour the brave souls who have made the ultimate sacrifice defending Israel, and those who have tragically lost their lives as a result of attacks against Israel. In our school assembly, we commemorated soldiers such as Sergeant Tomer Leibovitz, whose memory lives on through a heartfelt song penned by his sister, Lieutenant Noam Leibovitz. Through tears and melodies, Tomer's family shared their love and loss with us, reminding us of the preciousness of every moment. We also remember Sergeant Ariel Erez, who is not just a name, but a cherished member of our Bialik Family, forever etched in our hearts. Today, we were honoured to hear from Nimrod Vromen, who graciously shared his reflections with our school community, weaving a tapestry of remembrance and resilience. Rabbi Shneur sung heartfelt prayers; Avinu Shebashamayim, Kadish, and El Maleh Rachamim, moving us to our core. And amidst our solemn remembrance, Lia R gave a stirring performance of Israel’s Eurovision song, Hurricane. Originally titled "October Rain," this song is a poignant tribute to the tragic events of October 7th. #otd in 1865, Cst John "Jack" Drummond Buchanan OGILVY was Justice of the Peace, #bcprovincialpolice Constable, and Collector of #customs at Bella Coola. He had arrested the notorious #bootlegger Antoine Lucanage and sent him for trial down to #newwestminster. While enroute, Lucanage escaped, returning to Bella Coola on the northbound schooner Langley. OGILVY tried, unsuccessfully, to find Lucanage in #bellacoola. So when the schooner Langley left port days later with Lucanage hidden on board, he enlisted help from Morris Moss & several First Nations males. Using a canoe, they chased after and caught up to the schooner at 9pm on the evening of May 11, 1865. During the search below decks, Lucanage emerged from a hiding spot inside a locker and shot OGILVY. Despite being severely wounded, OGILVY struggled up the ladder to the deck, only to be followed by Lucanage, who attacked and stabbed him. As the fight continued, OGILVY managed to take the gun away from Lucanage, getting off two shots as the latter dove into the water and escaped. Several months later, Lucanage's body was found on northern #vancouverisland. On the Langley, OGILVY lingered for a day before dying from his wounds. He was 30 years old. A married father, Cst John "Jack" D B OGILVY, was buried in the Old Burying Grounds (now known as #pioneerpark) in #victoria. Of interest, Cst John OGILVY was second in command of the 1864 #chilcotin expedition. NB. In stories about Cst OGILVY, two spellings of his name are used: OGILVY and OGILVIE. Our brother Police Officer Jacob Derbin was shot and killed while responding to a disturbance call in the 300 block of East 211th Street at about 9:55 pm. He was ambushed by a subject after he arrived at the location. The man who shot him, who is a convicted felon and was wanted for violating conditions of his community supervision, fled the scene and remains at large. Officer Derbin was transported to University Hospitals where he succumbed to his wounds. Officer Derbin had served with the Euclid Police Department for 10 months. Unfortunately there will be times where your absence will teach you what your presence cannot. You need to stop breaking your own heart in trying to make a relationship work that clearly isn’t meant to work to begin with. You can’t force someone to genuinely care about you. You can’t force someone to be faithful to you. You can’t force someone to be the person you need them to be. The truth is, sometimes the person you want the most is the same person you would be best without. You have got to understand some things are meant to come into your life, just not meant to stay. Everything that you do to show love, you have to be careful, not to lose yourself by trying to fix what should never been there in the first place. You can’t get the relationship you need from someone who’s not ready to reciprocate the love you give to them. I know it’s hard when you meet someone and your heart feels, that’s the person you could spend an eternity with, and you start to accept that they are not that person you thought they needed to be. And no matter how many times you cry yourself to sleep at night, you will eventually heal from your previous relationship and find the one you have always longed for. Your future will now bring an understanding of why things didn’t work out in your previous relationships. One thing I have learned throughout the years, is “It is better to be single than to be in a relationship settling for less.” If they see you as an option, then they don’t deserve to be a priority in your life. Maj Abhijit Kumar hailed from Nagoan dist in #Assam and belonged to the Rajput Regiment of #IndianArmy. He made the supreme sacrifice on 13 May 1993, during a counter-insurgency operation in J&K. During May 1993, Maj Abhijit Kumar Das‘s unit was deployed in the Doda district of J&K close to the Line of Control(LOC). The unit troops were engaged in counter-insurgency operations regularly as its AOR (Area of Responsibility) was affected by active militancy. Besides manning the forward posts in the Doda district, Maj Das’s unit also undertook operations to check the infiltration bids as its AOR was prone to infiltration by the militants from across the border. In May 1993, the security forces received credible information from intelligence sources about the presence of terrorists in the Doda district in an area falling under the AOR of Maj Das’s unit. Based on the intelligence inputs Maj Das’s unit decided to launch a search and destroy operation in the suspected area. The operation was launched on 01 May 1993, under the leadership of Maj Das. Maj Das along with his troops swung into action and launched the operation as planned. However, the troops could not make contact with the terrorists despite continuous efforts. Eventually, Maj Das and his men made contact with the terrorists on 13 May after trailing them for 13 days. The terrorists opened fire at the troops, on being cornered and challenged. Thereafter a fierce gun battle ensued with heavy exchange of fire. Maj Das leading from the front, deployed his troops tactically to block the escape routes of the terrorists. However, in the following exchange of fire, Maj Das got seriously injured. Friday 10 May 2024: It’s really hard to forget the anniversary of my dad’s death, especially as it falls one day before the birthday of my youngest niece. I remember in the run up to it, and then this morning I remembered it was the day of. But then work took over and I completely forgot. Until I just sat down after work and remembered. And felt a bit teary. And that’s how grief works. Twenty two years on and even though you can accept someone is gone and be at peace with it, you won’t ever stop the pangs of sadness that seemingly come out of nowhere and take you by surprise. I don’t think you can ever go a day without missing a loved one, whether they are here physically or in spirit. But I like to think that he is always with me, and watching over me and our family. Amused most of the time, shaking his head at others. Thankfully love always lives on. And for as long as I’m alive, I will carry that love and fond memories of him in my heart. This year feels sadder than usual, as it fast approaches the first anniversary of the death of someone who was as good as a brother to me, and who also passed very unexpectedly. And I am reminded of being that twenty something year old young adult, like one of my nieces and nephews right now, trying to come to terms with something so beyond my control, yet so formative in becoming who I am. #love #loveisalwaystheanswer #grief #loss #neverforget #life #dadinheaven #lovealways

I heard it’s Mother’s Day!!!! Well this was my mommy, my momma bear, my first skate and dance teacher (🤩). Her name was Juanita, and at 39 she found out she was going to be a mother. 😮💨 At 40 she gave birth and gave me nothing but the best she could give.
