#OTD, May 13, the Society of the Cincinnati celebrates its 241st birthday. Its mission was (and remains) purely patriotic, to promote the ideals and memory of the American Revolution, maintain the fraternal bonds between the officers, and support members and their families in need. But soon after its founding, some accused the hereditary organization, with members drawn exclusively from the officer corps, of attempting to create an American aristocracy that might undermine the new republic. Benjamin Franklin, ambassador to France from December 1776 to May 1785, learned about the creation of Society after word traveled to him through French and American diplomatic and social circles, and on January 26, 1784, drafted a critique of the Society disguised as a letter to his daughter, Sarah Bache. Now famous for Franklin’s assessment of the turkey as a better symbol of America (and for the Society) than the bald eagle, this letter was an attack on the pretensions of Europe’s hereditary aristocracy—merely using the Society’s hereditary principle, which Franklin thought was benign, as an opportunity to ridicule the idea of aristocratic privilege in Europe. Franklin wrote: “For my own part I wish the bald eagle had not been chosen as the representative of our country. He is a bird of bad moral character…therefore by no means a proper emblem for the brave and honest Cincinnati of America, who have driven all the king birds from our country.” Read more about Franklin’s letter by using the link in our bio. #OTD in 1908, President Theodore Roosevelt established the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps. For nearly a century prior, nurses were already working aboard naval ships and hospitals, but were not given room and board allowances and had to cook their own meals. With more than 20 different medical specialties today, the unit has grown to more than 2,566 active duty and Reserve nurses, both male and female, and are stationed worldwide. Ein falscher Schritt im Übermut kostete Heinz Jakszt sein Leben. Geboren am 13.05.1923 in Essen wohnte der Sohn Fabrikarbeiters Christof Jakszt mit der Familie im Essener Westen. Er war evangelisch getauft. Als Heinz Neun war, stand vor dem Haus ein Anstreichergerüst. Immer wieder warnte sein Vater, doch Heinz spielte mit Freundinnen und Freunden Fangen auf dem Gerüst. Bei einer der Runden stürzte er und landete auf dem Hinterkopf. Die Verletzung schien nicht dramatisch. Dann jedoch setzten Ohnmachtsanfälle ein. Durch den Sturz hatte sich eine Epilepsie entwickelt. Heinz besuchte bis zur 8. Klasse die Volksschule. Danach jedoch fand er sich in keiner Anstellung zurecht, wurde unzufrieden und gereizt und begann zu Stottern. Als er 14 Jahre alt war, starb seine Mutter an einem Herzklappenfehler. Der Gemeindepfarrer, den Heinz Vater um Rat fragte, riet zu einer Unterbringung in einer Einrichtung der evangelischen Stiftung Hephata in Mönchengladbach. Er wurde in der „Rheinischen Provinzial-Kinderanstalt für seelisch Abnorme“ in Bonn untersucht, und dann an das Bodelschwingh-Haus nach Mönchengladbach überwiesen. Dort besuchte ihn seine ältere Schwester Erika einige Male. Heinz galt als gutmütig und ruhig, aber auch zu Streichen aufgelegt. Er arbeitete in der Schäl-Küche und half anderen Mitbewohnern seiner Station bei ihrem Alltag. Doch in das Idealbild der Nationalsozialisten passte er nicht. Am 12.07.1943 wurde der 20-Jährige in die „Heilerziehungs- und Pflegeanstalt Scheuern bei Nassau“ überwiesen. Von dort erfolgte am 03.11.1943 der Transport an die Tötungsanstalt Hadamar, wo Heinz Jakszt eine Woche später mit Gift ermordet wurde. Im Sommer nach der Ermordung teilte die Frau eines Essener SA-Mannes Erika mit, ihr Bruder sei an einer Lungenentzündung verstorben. Eine geplante Fahrt an sein Grab wurde ihr ausgeredet. Seit Mai 2004 ist eine Straße in Mönchengladbach nach Heinz Jakszt benannt. Motorista Museum Mondays! This week in 1928, (May 14) A crowd gathered at the Leaside Aerodrome to welcome a Fokker Tri-Motor plane on its arrival. The plane was flown to Leaside by Captain Alfred Loewenstein, a famous multimillionaire Belgian financier, who at the time was the third richest man in the world. After greeting the crowd, Loewenstein headed into the city of Toronto to attend business meetings at the King Edward Hotel. The visit was a short one and Loewenstein was back in the air by 5pm. Tragically, less than two months after this Toronto visit, Loewenstein was killed when he fell thousands of feet from a door of his plane into the English Channel. Several theories have been proposed as to why he fell out of the plane, yet none were proven, the event is still shrouded in mystery. Here's an aviation first you don't hear about a lot. #OTD in 1908, Charles William Furnas, a mechanic for the Wright Company, became the first airplane passenger! Furnas rode aboard the Wright Flyer III, with Wilbur Wright as pilot, at Kill Devil Hills, Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. The flight lasted only 29 seconds and covered just over 650 yards, but later the same day, Furnas flew again, this time with Orville as pilot (pictured), and covered just over two miles in around 4 minutes. TODAY IN COAST GUARD AVIATION HISTORY – 13 MAY 1940 (1 OF 2 - VIDEO - link at bottom): a VS-300 helicopter designed and crewed by Igor I. Sikorsky and built by Vought-Sikorsky Aircraft Division of the United Aircraft Corporation made its first public flight at Stratford, Connecticut. The VS-300 was America's first practical helicopter and the first successful helicopter in the world to perfect the now familiar single main rotor and tail rotor design. The innovative 28-foot diameter, three-blade rotor allowed for variable pitch of the blades with a blade speed of approximately 255 RPM. The concepts demonstrated in the VS-300 provided the basis for the first production helicopters and became the standard for helicopter manufacturing across the world. Peter Henry Emerson (1856 – 1936) was a British writer and photographer. His photographs are early examples of promoting straight photography as an art form. In 1889 he published a controversial and influential book Naturalistic Photography for Students of the Art, in which he explained his philosophy of art and straightforward photography. The book was described by one writer as "the bombshell dropped at the tea party" because of the case it made that truthful and realistic photographs would replace contrived photography. #OTD in 1869, at a special session called by Governor Conrad Baker, and after much deliberation, the Indiana General Assembly approved a law that admitted African American children to public schools. In a 1912 article for the Indiana Magazine of History, Professor Abram C. Shortridge noted that around 1862 the Indiana State Teachers' Association began to lobby for "colored schools," but lawmakers failed to take on the issue until 1867. Shortridge lamented that until the 1869 special session it looked as if “the black children were doomed to run the streets for another term of two years while their fathers and mothers continued to pay their taxes, by the aid of which the children of the more favored race were kept in school ten months of the year." He noted that shortly after the amendment passed, Indianapolis prepared to accommodate these students and reported, "[S]ome of the buildings already abandoned were repaired and refurnished; others were rented, properly seated and made quite comfortable.
