With the ‘Flowers for Aline’ exhibition in April, Sogestu Ikebana Los Angeles Branch truly transformed Hollyhock House into a “garden house,” as Frank Lloyd Wright conceived it. We are so grateful for the stunning works created by 40 ikebana artists that activated terraces gardens and responded to Wright’s artful interiors. We couldn’t have asked for more talented and passionate collaborators! Special thanks to Ravi GuneWardena for guiding this project, a revelatory celebration of Aline Barnsdall and her vision for Hollyhock House as a center for the arts.

The light-filled living room? The sunken seating pit in the primary bedroom? Or is it the fact that it’s the first residence in Brooklyn built out of mass timber? Let us know in the comments below and don’t forget to vote for Brooklyn Mass Timber House in @azuremagazine's AZ Awards People’s Choice vote! Link in bio to vote. Voting closes May 17th. This 1882 house in Manchester, New Hampshire, is a spectacular example of the creativity of American architects as the Shingle Style emerged from the English Queen Anne style. Voluminous roofs containing several stories set on first story masonry bases, projecting bays and towers, recessed upper story porches, wrap-around first story porches, arches, patterned shingle, and panelized wall treatments are all typical of this transitional period between the two styles. This elevation reflects the English Queen Anne more than the opposite side, which I'll show in another post at some point. It is more Shingle Style. If anyone knows the architect, original owner, or any other info on this house, I would welcome the information. It is unusual for my online research to strike out as much as it has for this house... The Queen Anne Style developed in England and made its way to America in the 1870s. Initially imitative of English examples, it was primarily used for grand mansions. A distinct American version of the Queen Anne emerged from the style and was eventually used for everything from mansions to millworker cottages. The Shingle Style also emerged from Queen Anne in the 1880s. Transitional examples like this one are not common. Queen Anne and Shingle are two of 25 styles described and illustrated with hundreds of color photos in Chapter 2 of "Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners." Signed and personalized copies of the award-winning and bestselling 720-page hardcover book are available from the author at YourHistoricHouse.com. Our shop also carries select preservation and restoration titles, including Virginia McAlester's classic "A Field Guide to American Houses." S24, brick by brick. The upcoming post series are from the studio, "Theorising Architectural Production" for Spring 2024 (semester 2 MAHR). In second semester MAHR we study the construction of sets of Indian buildings. This is not a purely technical quest, but a means of addressing Indian architecture in a critical context using buildings as primary evidence. The methodology began with a process of drawing in detail to understand how buildings have been constructed. These drawings were then used as evidence in a historical or theoretical context. This method is aligned with academic work, including books Strange Details and The function of Ornament. This year we examined eight exposed brick buildings constructed in Gujarat between the late nineteenth century and the 1980s. As you wait for the posts based on students’ work with these eight buildings to unravel, check out our exhibition at Sagara basement! Padgate (LVPAD), Warrington The telephone exchange at Padgate, near Warrington, is a Standard Type K2.2 designed by engineers based in the Post Office Telephones North West Region's Liverpool Area. Original drawings are dated around 1973. There are no evident modifications to this standard type building, clad in standard precast concrete panels (which have since been painted), and no apparent architectural involvement at design stage. Standard Type K2.2 was designed by the Post Office and Ministry of Public Building and Works Joint Research and Development Group (the JRDG) with an initial building programme between 1969 to 1972, before the type was ultimately cancelled in 1978. It initially accommodated 7,000 lines and largely based on the K2.1 design (which was partly single storey and only accommodated 5,000 lines). #TE1940to1981 #TelephoneExchange #Architecture #PhD #Research #Design #Telecommunciations #Exchange #Switchboard #ArchitecturalHistory #History #Telephone #Communication #BritishTelecom #Heritage #BT #BTArchives #HistoricEngland #GPO #Padgate #Warrington

2024 should be the Quasquicentennial anniversary of the Lawrence County Courthouse in Lawrenceville, Illinois. It is the third, all built on the same square at the center of the commercial district. There is much to love about this building. The Renaissance Revival (some authors suggest Second Empire but the lack of a mansard roof makes that a difficult argument to carry) design eschews a broad front facade in favor of a narrow face, the extensive copper cladding and ornamentation balances the deep red brick without resembling Christmas decorations, the forthright front entrance, and finally, the blunted cupola that resembles a CCCP rocket. The windows have been futzed with at some point so now they give a pale red, white, and blue appearance that does diminish the design’s verticality. The green is gorgeous albeit small. The county appears to have avoided the all-too-common call for additional parking and paved it to within an inch of its life. #lawrencecountyillinois #lawrencevilleillinois #illinois_shots #illinoisphotographer #outandabout2023ngm #embarrasriver #southeasternillinois #midwestern #midwesternarchitecture #renaissancerevival #maybesecondempire #coppercladding #cupola #illinoiscourthouse #illinoiscourthouses #courthousesofillinois #illinoiscourthousetour #courthousesquare #courthousearchitecture #archidaily #illinoishistory #architecturaldesign #architecturaldigest #architecturalhistory #architecturalphotographer #architecture_hunter #sanbornmaps #usgstopomaps #researchisthereason

Sing to the tune of Sweet Caroline: 🎶 Sweet roof of mine… ba ba ba… roof lines never looked so good-🎶 Posted @withregram • @wgrnstn Built in 1901 and designed by Frederick A. Tompson, this Shingle Style house is one of many that populate Portland’s West End. Tompson was born in Portland and trained with local architect Francis Fassett in the early 1880s. It was during this time that Fassett was in partnership with John Calvin Stevens and the firm of Fassett & Stevens was churning out some really tidy designs. It was a good time to be learning by working in this office. . Tompson became a partner not long after Stevens left the firm, and Fassett & Tompson lasted until about 1890. From then on Tompson practiced on his own. . Tompson was skilled and knew what worked. Designing this house for his own use, he played off design ideas of the 1880s but also looked at growing interests in the Colonial Revival. Somewhat tamed and suburbanized, this was the Shingle Style for the 20th century. . The house has been well preserved by subsequent owners and from this view the only major alteration was the enclosing of a rear porch and the addition of a sleeping porch above. Carried out in the 1930s this work was overseen by John Calvin Stevens and his son, John Howard Stevens. . #fredericktompson #PortlandMaine #mainearchitecture #shinglestyle #archi #portland #maine #archi_ologie #historichouse #this oldhouse #historicpreservation #architecturalhistory #houseportrait #houseaddict #vacationland #homesofinstagram #oldhouselove #architecture #roof

A spur of the moment decision led to us visiting this amazing place. This is Montezuma Castle in the Verde River Valley. It was built by the Sinagua people and was inhabited between 1100 and 1425 AD. It was declared a national monument in 1906, and was one of the four original national monuments created by the American Antiquities Act by President Theodore Roosevelt. Not that this needs to be said, but just in case, obviously, this site has no relation to the legendary Cheif Montezuma of the Aztecs/Mexicas. When European decendants first encountered this site in the 1860s, they associated the ruins with the highly romantized figure of Montezuma, despite Montezuma likely being completely unaware of this site's existence. Regardless of the historically inaccurate name, if you are ever in the area, I highly recommend stopping to visit. #architecturaltourist #architecturalhistory #architecturelovers #architecture #archeology #archeologicalsite #nationalmonument #arizona #arizonaarchitecture #historicplaces #architecturephotography #vacationphotos #vacationadventures

MEDICAL FACILITY Botton Champalimaud Pancreatic Cancer Center Architects / Design: Sachin Agshikar Lisbon, Portugal The Botton Champalimaud Pancreatic Cancer Center in Lisbon, Portugal was designed by architect Sachin Agshikar. The project was commissioned by the Champalimaud Foundation, who had previously built a cancer research center on the site designed by the late architect Charles Correa. Agshikar was tasked with designing the new hospital building to functionally relate to and blend seamlessly with the existing research center. Despite the small plot size of just 13,680 square meters, Agshikar's design successfully integrated the new hospital with the previous building. The hospital features a gently curved stone facade that echoes the dramatic gestures of the research center, creating architectural continuity. The building is punctured with oval-shaped cutouts and a deep cut to reveal the landscaped courtyards beyond, bringing natural elements inside. A key focus of the design was creating a peaceful, healing environment for patients. The building features a large water body within the central courtyard, with the sound and sight of water having a soothing effect. The outdoor spaces next to the water provide a tranquil setting for patients, their families, and the research staff. Overall, Agshikar's design for the Botton Champalimaud Pancreatic Cancer Center combines functionality, architectural harmony, and a strong emphasis on natural elements to create a holistic healing environment. #architecturestudents #architectureschool #coachingforstudents #practicalknowledge #learnarchitecture #designeducation #architecture #dzynity #design #archdaily #architecturephotography #architecturestudent #architectureeducation #architectureknowledge #architecturaldesign #designstudio #architecturelife #archistudent #buildingspaces #designinspiration #architecturemodel #architecturelovers #architecturalhistory #designthinking #collegestudents #designstudents #designcoaching #architectureready

The Hôtel de Sully is a Louis XIII style hôtel particulier, or private mansion, located at 62 rue Saint-Antoine in the Marais, IV arrondissement, Paris, France. One of the most beautiful hôtel particulier in Paris according to me. Built at the beginning of the 17th century, it is nowadays the seat of the Centre des Monuments Nationaux, the French national organization responsible for national heritage sites. It has been listed since 1862 as a monument historique. The Hôtel de Sully was built, with gardens and an orangery, between 1624 and 1630, for the wealthy financier Mesme Gallet. The building is usually attributed to the architect Jean Androuet du Cerceau. The site was chosen to give access to the Place Royale - today the Place des Vosges. The Marais was then an especially fashionable area for the high nobility. Maximilien de Béthune, Duke of Sully, and former Superintendent of Finances to King Henri IV, purchased the hôtel, completed and fully furnished, on 23 February 1634. He completed the redecoration of the building, and spent his last years living there. His grandson Maximilien commissioned architects, most probably Simon Lambert and François Le Vau, to build an additional wing in 1660, to the west of the garden. The Hôtel de Sully still bears the name of this family, who owned the building into the 18th century. #parisgram #parisjetaime #parismood #paris #hoteldesully #paris2024 #architecturalhistory #arquitectura #arquitetura #mimarlik #architettura #architecturaldetails #architektur #architektura #architecturalornamentation #architecturedaily #architecture #historical #histoire #history #historyfacts #oldbuilding #mansion #renaissance #renaissancearchitecture #baroquearchitecture #baroque #patrimoine #heritage #france

Resurrection 🌲 // Swipe for full image + closeup 👉 - ‘Without question we shall rise, without question we shall see one another and joyfully tell one another everything that has happened.’ - This piece turned out lighter than expected. I don’t remember what I originally thought anymore. Perhaps something more somber, the way I tend to depict Lewerentz. But as I went on drawing it gradually occurred to me that the piece wanted to be light. It wanted to be comforting and hopeful. So I let it. I think that was perfect because Lewerentz was, after all, the architect of death *and* life. Understanding one means understanding the other. No doubt he had perfect knowledge of both, devout man that he was. And I will eternally believe that dour veneers only belie boundless gentleness and warmth. We need little encouragement to share images of Lubetkin + Tecton’s penguin pool at @zsllondonzoo (and particularly its residents! 🐧) - and this month marks 90 years since it first opened in May 1934. The pool was Tecton’s second commission for the Royal Zoological Society. With the expertise of structural engineer Ove Arup, they created a design with striking elliptical ramps that aimed to show off the penguins’ playful antics to full effect. Unfortunately, the design was not so well suited to the penguins’ welfare, and they moved out to ‘Penguin Beach’ in 2004 - but you can still find the Grade I listed structure at London Zoo. 📷 1. Historic Preservation Month Day 7/31 📍Buckhead, Atlanta I originally came across this home in late July of 2023. I credit this home to growing my passion for historic preservation. When I encountered this home, I instantly pulled out Zillow to look into the details. As I read the description, I noticed the realtors selling the home in 2008 had suggested the possibility of tearing it down. I instantly became incredibly thankful that the owners decided to preserve it. About 2 weeks later I decided to post the home on a facebook page dedicated to mid-century modern homes. The owner ended up responding with more details about the home. It was built by renowned Atlanta architect Joe Amisano for him and his family. Joe Amisano was the architect for Lenox Square, Woodruff Arts Center, and the Peachtree Center Marta Station. A beautiful structure, it has become my favorite home in all of Atlanta. #historicpreservation #preservation #architecturalhistory #architecture #historicbuildings #midcenturymodern

Peter Windeler House, 573 South Van Ness Av., San Francisco Once part of a neighborhood with residences of wealthy industrialists, many of them German-American, this is the last remaining Victorian house on this block front, now lying incongruously between a paint store and a gas station/convenience store Built in the 1890s, the architect of this Queen Anne style stunner is unknown It was the home of Peter Windeler, a German-born brewer who co-owned Enterprise Brewing Co. Windeler lived here from the late 1890s until his death in 1921; a 1922 trade publication reported that the building (which then had the address 2033 Howard St.) was being converted to apartments This building survived the 1906 earthquake, the fires that came after it, and the later transition of this Mission District block to commercial uses The current occupant is Landmark Realty There is a new Enterprise Brewing Co. in San Francisco, opened 2023, which revived the name and spirit of Windeler’s old company It’s at 1150 Howard St., about 1 mile from the Peter Windeler House @enterprisebrewingco The images here are mine from 2018, plus a historic block map from 1900, a portrait of Windeler published in 1901 (he looks like a fin-de-siècle German brewer should), and Enterprise Brewing Co. ads from 1897 and 1898 mentioning Windeler . . . . #VictorianHouse #VictorianArchitecture #QueenAnneStyle #QueenAnneArchitecture #MissionDistrict #SanFrancisco #SanFranciscoArchitecture #SanFranciscoHistory #TheMission #SouthVanNess #SouthVanNessAvenue #MySecretSF #EnterpriseBrewingCo #EnterpriseBeer #PeterWindeler #PeterWindelerHouse #архитектура #1890sArchitecture #ArchitecturalHistory #architecture #architektur #arkitektur #arquitectura #architettura #arkkitehtuuri #arquitetura #architektura #ArchitecturalPhotography #αρχιτεκτονική

Paulo Freire is one of the most celebrated educators of the 20th century, so one would imagine that his monumental work has influenced architectural education. Unfortunately, that’s not the case. A search for Paulo Freire in architecture journals reveals that our field does not respond to his work in the same magnitude as the humanities and social sciences in general. In his article “Paulo Freire as an Antidote to the Hegemony of Abstraction,” PLATFORM editor Fernando Lara raises some questions as to why is the case. One of his hypotheses is that the spatial dimension of Freire’s theory runs contrary to the idea of the architect as a master of spatial abstraction. Lara’s framing of architecture as a discipline of abstract and disembodied procedures positions it as diametrically opposed to Freire’s Pedagogy of the Oppressed. Any suggestion that gives agency to those who build or use our structures pushes the architect out of the central position that is commonly understood. Le Corbusier's Four Types of Composition: The Secrets of Modern Architectur #architecture #lecorbusier #design #modern #4typesofcomposition #architecturalhistory
