تاریخ هخامنشیان (بخش ۳۳۰) داریوش بزرگ ماموریت داتیش و نبرد ماراتُن با این شکست ترس و وحشت آتنی‌ها برای همیشه از ایرانی‌ها فروریخت. هرودت (۱) می‌نویسد: “تا این زمان برای آفریدن وحشت در یونانی‌ها تنها شنیدن نام مادها (ایرانی‌ها) کفایت می‌کرد”. در حقیقت سال ۴۹۰ آغاز پیروزی اسکندر در ۳۳۲ پیش از میلاد بود. ترس یونانی‌ها واقعاً ریخته و آوازه آن به گوش مردم مقدونیه نیز رسیده بود! داریوش که نمی‌توانست، دست‌کم علناً بپذیرد که سپاه بزرگ او از دولت-شهر کوچکی مانند آتن شکست خورده است، به فکر یک لشکرکشی دوباره افتاد. فراهم‌آوردن تدارکات لازم چندین سال طول کشید. از بخت یونانی‌ها لازم بود نخست شورشی تازه در مصر سرکوب شود. اما پیش از خواباندن شورش مصر و حمله به مصر، داریوش در ۷۲ سالگی، پس از ۳۰ روز بیماری (۲)، در نوامبر ۴۸۶ پیش از میلاد، در تخت‌جمشید درگذشت. او در سال‌های پایان عمر پُرماجرای خود، علاوه بر این‌که ناگزیر از کنارآمدن با غرور جریحه‌دار خود بود، می‌بایستی کشاکش میان فرزندان خود را نیز تحمل می‌کرد. این کشاکش در دربار ایران تازگی نداشت. داستان بردیا و کمبوجیه نیز از این دست بود. بزرگ‌ترین اختلاف اعضای خاندان سلطنت با یکدیگر بر سر انتخاب مقام ولی‌عهدی بود، که به سبب تعدد همسران، مدعیان آشکار و پنهان زیادی داشت. Bucket list item was crossed off today! Finally made it to the Great Wall of China! It’s even more incredible and breathtaking than you would ever imagine, and though by far one of the most difficult hikes I have ever done, it was worth every single step to get the views from the high points. I did the Mutianyu section of the wall, and walked from east to west and both sides gave unique views of the mountains and wall. LiDAR – Sugar Loaf - Carmarthenshire DTM- (Digital Terrain Model, i.e. No buildings or foliage) Forcing the A483 to go around it on its way to the town of Llanwrtyd Wells (& just to the SW of, I kid you not, the Burger Queen fast food van in a layby that’s listed on Google Maps) straddling an escarpment sits the univallate contour hillfort, Sugar Loaf. The Roman Road, Margary 623 runs parallel to the A483 along the hillcrests to the southeast. Toby Driver discovered and interpreted the site in 2001 and by ariel investigation found that a terrace & small outwork defends the NE entrance. Four rock-cut house platforms overlook the rampart. You can just make them out on the oblique LiDAR. No recorded finds or excavations, hence undated* (Scheduled monument) Iron Age tribal association (conjecture based on location): Demetae *Morphology suggests Iron Age date. تاریخ هخامنشیان (بخش ۳۲۹) داریوش بزرگ ماموریت داتیش و نبرد ماراتُن در ایونی ناوگان لازم برای انتقال نیرو به خاک یونان در اختیار قرار گرفت. برای دوری‌جستن از توفان از نزدیک‌شدن به آتُس پرهیز شد و ناوگان از دریای ایکاری در حوالی ناکسوس استفاده کرد. ارتيرا پس از ۶ روز پایداری در برابر نیروهای ایرانی سرانجام از پا درآمد و شهر به آتش کشانده شد. مردم شهر، همان‌گونه که داریوش فرمان داده بود، برای بردگی داریوش به شوش کوچانده شدند، اما داریوش آن‌ها را بخشید و در ملک خود اَردِریکه، در نزدیکی شوش، اسکان داد (۱). پس از ارتیرا نوبت آتن بود. هیپیاس، فرمانروای معزول آتن، که منتظر چنین روزی بود به فرماندهان ایرانی پیشنهاد کرد که جنگ را به جلگه ماراتُن بکشانند (۲). در نبرد سختی که درگرفت، روز ۱۱ سپتامبر ۴۹۰ پیش از میلاد، ایرانی‌ها، پس از شکستی که از آتنی‌ها خوردند، به کشتی‌های خود پناه بردند و داتیس از راه دریا به آسیا عقب نشست (۳). The Abu Simbel temples are two massive rock temples at Abu Simbel, a village in Aswan Governorate, Upper Egypt, near the border with Sudan. They are situated on the western bank of Lake Nasser, about 230 km southwest of Aswan. The complex is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the 'Nubian Monuments', which run from Abu Simbel downriver to Philae (near Aswan). The twin temples were originally carved out of the mountainside in the 13th century BC, during the 19th dynasty reign of the Pharaoh Ramesses II. They serve as a lasting monument to the king and his queen Nefertari, and commemorate his victory at the Battle of Kadesh. Their huge external rock relief figures have become iconic. _ The complex was relocated in its entirety in 1968 under the supervision of a Polish archaeologist, Kazimierz Michałowski, on an artificial hill made from a domed structure, high above the Aswan High Dam reservoir. The relocation of the temples was necessary or they would have been submerged during the creation of Lake Nasser, the massive artificial water reservoir formed after the building of the Aswan High Dam on the River Nile. Silversmiths have been skilfully hand-crafting silver objects and jewellery in China for over 2000 years. While earlier pieces are rare because the precious metal was often melted down to use as currency, export pieces in the West became popular after 1800. This bowl and cover from the Tang dynasty (618–907) was inspired by Persian serving bowls. The pair is covered in gold leaf with traditional designs of lotus and pomegranates executed with the flat chasing technique, where patterns were created by impressing outlines into the silver so that no silver is cut away from the surface and the weight of the piece remains intact. Third emission, struck 1493 With a fascinating multileveled symbology this silver Idra was, even in the renaissance, very nuanced and projected a powerful message. Today this coin, struck by the Duke Ercole I. d'Este (1471-1505) of Ferrara in 1493, is known as one of the most interesting numismatic pieces of the Italian renaissance. While the obverse shows an expressive, yet relatively standard portrait in a fine contemporary style, the reverse hosts a fearsome depiction of the seven-headed hydra of Greek myth. In a fascinating 2017 essay entitled A Roman Monster in the Humanist Imagination, Margaret Meserve enumerates the many connections between the Duke, Hercules, and the Hydra. In fact, the author also goes on to describe how, in a similar manner to Roman emperors like Commodus, the Duke actually “invoked [Hercules] as an alter ego” repeatedly (p.136). At the base level, the connection between the Duke and the Hydra was based solely on his name, as the monster was killed by Hercules. Furthermore, he struck this particular coin to commemorate the draining of the swamps as attested to by his courtiers Pellegrino Prisciani and Giovanni Sabadino degli Arienti (p.137). CLOUD STATE UNIVERSITY LEADERS ARE PROPOSING MAJOR BUDGET CUTS TO PROGRAMS AND FACULTY TO ADDRESS A BUDGET DEFICIT! ✨ In a meeting with faculty on Monday, SCSU administrators recommended discontinuing 46 of the university’s 136 degree programs, including history, Spanish, gender and women’s studies, sociology, etc. They also proposed cutting 50 of 85 minor degrees, including African American and American Indian studies. Fifty-seven faculty positions would be cut, or 13 percent of the total. The cuts are necessary to address a structural budget deficit.
