Today, 228 years ago, Napoleon beat an Austrian rearguard at Lodi. While Lodi was not a crushing victory like his later battles, it was a key moment in establishing the Napoleonic Legend. Inspiring his troops and aiming the guns himself, his men affectionately started to call him Le Petit Caporal. We covered Lodi in episode 18/Q2-1796 and will talk about it again soon in a bonus mini series about Napoleon's First Italian Campaign! #onthisday #onthisdayinhistory #history #podcast #historypodcast #napoleon #bonaparte #napoleonicwars #frenchrevolution

📅 10 May 1944: Abdul Kadir, a wicketkeeper for Pakistan, made a memorable debut on his birthday. In the 1964-65 series against Australia in Karachi, he opened the innings and scored 95 before being run out. He and Khalid Ibadulla, another debutant, put up a first-wicket partnership of 249 runs. Despite a promising start, Kadir played only three more Tests. His last two games were as a specialist batter, where he scored a five-hour long 58 in his final innings against New Zealand in Auckland. Interestingly, Kadir's top-level career ended before he turned 21, a rarity in a sport where players usually debut as adults. 🇵🇰 📷 #Pakistan #History #OnThisDay #PakistanPolitics #PakistanHistory #Politics #Cricket #PakistanCricketTeam #Sports #ThisDayInHistory #pakistan_pics #historyfacts #historylovers #cricketupdates #pakistandiaries #historypodcast #PakistanCricketBoard #pakistanart #historyclass

📅 10 May 1958: Tauseef Ahmed, a skilled offspinner from Pakistan, was born on this day. Despite being overshadowed by his colleagues Abdul Qadir and Iqbal Qasim, Tauseef made a name for himself in the cricket world. He debuted against Australia in the 1979-80 season, taking seven wickets. One of his notable performances was during Pakistan's 16-run victory over India in Bangalore in 1987. In this match, he and Qasim took nine wickets each, contributing to the end of Sunil Gavaskar's Test career with a score of 96. In a later match against Australia in Karachi, Tauseef had match figures of 47.4-28-44-3. Known for his economical bowling, Tauseef's average was even better than the renowned Qadir's. His contributions to cricket, though often overlooked, were significant. 🇵🇰 📷 #Pakistan #History #OnThisDay #PakistanPolitics #PakistanHistory #Politics #Cricket #PakistanCricketTeam #Sports #ThisDayInHistory #pakistan_pics #historyfacts #historylovers #cricketupdates #pakistandiaries #historypodcast #PakistanCricketBoard #pakistanart #historyclass

I had this book recommended to me a few months back and finally got around to starting it this past Sunday. By last night, I had finished it. The Wager is one of, if not the best history book that I have ever read. It's thrilling, suspenseful, harrowing, and nearly impossible to put down. Between this, "Killers of the Flower Moon," and "The Lost City of Z," David Grann is becoming one of my favourite non-fiction authors. I cannot WAIT to see where he goes next! Don't take my word, though. Check out some of the reviews for yourself! "A rousing story of a maritime scandal…Drawing on a trove of firsthand accounts—logbooks, correspondence, diaries, court-martial testimony, and Admiralty and government records—Grann mounts a chilling, vibrant narrative…recounting the tumultuous events in tense detail…A brisk, absorbing history and a no-brainer for fans of the author’s suspenseful historical thrillers." - Kirkus, Starred Review. #TheHungryHistorian #ChefMoney # #podcast #history #food #cooking #recipes #historypodcast #foodpodcast #cookingpodcast #recipepodcast #davidgrann #thewager #killersoftheflowermoon #thelostcityofz #historicreads #historybooks

Three Quaker sisters – Hannah, Elizabeth, and Katharine Shipley – decided they wanted to start a school. Not another finishing school where girls learned to cook and crochet and behave in society, but a rigorous academic school specifically to train girls in languages and the sciences so they could get into Bryn Mawr and other colleges that were springing up for women in the late 19th century. In this podcast, you will learn about the evolution of girls’ education from before the founding of the country, and some special personalities that populated the Shipley School for its first 75 years. Next up- PEARL MOORE - the GOAT…still holds the record! During her collegiate career at Francis Marion University from 1975 to 1979, Moore dazzled audiences and opponents alike with her extraordinary talent. Standing at a modest 5-foot-7, she defied expectations and dominated the court, leading her team to the postseason for four consecutive years. What truly set her apart, however, was her scoring ability, as she consistently averaged over 30 points per season, a feat unparalleled in the annals of women’s basketball. In a display of sheer brilliance, Moore once erupted for an astonishing 60 points in a single game, showcasing her unparalleled skill and determination. Despite competing under the radar in the era of the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW), her remarkable achievements garnered well-deserved recognition and admiration. Her career points total of 4,061 remains a monumental milestone in women’s hoops, a testament to her unparalleled talent and dedication to the game. Even in today’s era of standout players and fierce competition, it’s a record that stands tall and is unlikely to be surpassed anytime soon. Last time on HPH we began the story of Toussaint Louverture who joined up with a slave rebellion in his home in the French colony of Saint Domingue. He rose to prominence and proved himself to be not only a brilliant military mind, but also an adept politician who would do anything to maintain the freedom on his fellow citizens. In this episode, we're taking a look at how he tried to best help his people while repeatedly being dicked over by the French, who were afraid of losing their colony. And of course we take a lot of strange detours on our drunken journey. Ralph Jenkins was a longtime Seattle resident who I first became aware of in 2008 when the Flying Heritage Collection moved to its new location at Paine Field in Everett, WA. Mr. Jenkins flew 129 combat missions over Western Europe in P-47 Thunderbolts with the 510th Fighter Squadron of the 405th Fighter Group. Nearly all of these missions were in a close air support role. In the weeks following D-Day, Jenkins became CO of the 510th when his squadron was killed over Normandy in July 1944. Jenkins named his P-47, "Tallahassee Lassie," in honor of his wife, Wisteria, who he met while at pilot training in Tallahassee, Florida. Mr. Jenkins passed away in 2017 just 4 days before his 98th birthday. He was a frequent visitor to fly days at the Flying Heritage Collection to see their P-47 painted up as his last Thunderbolt from the war. He was an extremely generous man, always signing autographs and answering questions that people had for him. When taking my wife to the museum after its long-awaited reopening following new ownership, this was the aircraft she wanted for a photo. #mastersoftheair #wwii #ww2 #worldwar2 #worldwarII #p47thunderbolt #Thunderbolt #warthunder #il2sturmovik #secondworldwar #aviators #aviationhistory #historypodcast #history #pnw #museum #airplanes #airshow #Flying

🌟 Spooky Vibes & Forgotten Tails from the Pittsburg Black Diamond Mines! 🌟 Hey friends! Today we're unearthing some chilling tales from California’s coal country—the historic Black Diamond Mines of Pittsburg. 🏔️⛏️ Back in the mid-1800s, this area was a bustling hub of activity, teeming with miners (who brought along their families) in search of the 'black diamonds' that powered our nation’s homes and industries. But beyond the soot and the sweat, the mines hold stories that echo through time. The work was perilous, and the living conditions were harsh, leading to tales of hauntings that linger to this day. Ghosts of the past, they say, still wander in the underground tunnels. 👻💼 The mines closed in the early 20th century, but they left behind a legacy of resilience and history, now preserved in the Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve. Imagine wandering through those same tunnels, where miners once toiled in darkness, now reclaimed by nature and whispering stories of yore. Swipe up to read more about this fascinating piece of California history and maybe plan a visit... if you dare. 🌲🚶‍♀️ 🔗BygoneEchoes.Website #HistoryLovers #HauntedHistory #BlackDiamondMines #CaliforniaHistory #SpookyStories #MiningHistory #PittsburgCA #ExploreCalifornia #GhostTales #HistoricalSites #Historic #ByGoneEchoes #BygoneEchoesPodcast #HistoryPodcast

In our Patreon Boudoir we have just covered the two great loves of Francis I's life: his poetic soulmate and dark femme fatale Françoise de Foix, and the lively, voluptuous and ruthlessly scheming Anne de Pisseleu. We'll be reviewing and ranking these two little-known but highly influential women who helped make Renaissance France, and the man who ruled it. ⚜️⚜️⚜️ Join the Boudoir to access our spinoff Mistress series, and more extra bonus content! Welcome to Taylor's 4th-grade Philosophy Class! We'll learn the very basics of the life of Socrates; Taylor will totally misinterpret one of his greatest edicts, “The unexamined life is not worth living,” and we'll learn a little about the life of the Ancient Greek Thinkers. The 'Doomed' part is that Socrates LOVED Athens with all his heart, and even when the gigantic jury of 501 Athenian Men find him guilty of not honoring the Gods of Athens & corrupting the youth, he still won't leave. This isn't really for 4th graders. There is some swearing. #socrates #greece #greekphilosphy #historypodcast

Does this famous face look familiar? 🤔 Pictured here is a young William Frederick Cody. You might know him as Buffalo Bill: one of the most legendary figures of the American Wild West. Before he earned his place in history as a showman and bison hunter, he served in the 7th Kansas Cavalry, Co. H: “Jennison’s Jayhawkers”. It just so happens that Buffalo Bill fought at the Battle of Westport, Missouri- our topic of discussion in Episode 22! In Thunder Bay a 'Persian' is a sweet cinnamon bun like roll with berry icing that you can really only find in Thunder Bay. But why is it named after an American General? General John Joseph Pershing was a decorated general who commanded many wars for the US. He started off with missions to decimate the Sioux and then most famously against Geronimo and the Apache people. In 1917, he became the  commander of the American Expeditionary Forces, in the battle against Germany in WW1.  Much later, in the mid 1940s, Art Bennett had a small bakery in Port Arthur (now Thunder Bay). General Pershing was visiting the area and came into the bakery several times, including to try a new pastry that Art invented. By that point, General Pershing was famous and had become a Pulitzer Prize winning author for his memoirs called  "My Experiences in the World War". Canadians were fighting in WW11 at this point and against the same enemy - Germany.  Art Bennett decided to name his new baked good after General Pershing - the man whom many felt helped the allies win WW1. Over the years the Pershing bun got shortened and evolved into “The Persian”. For more on Thunder Bay’s famous sweet roll check out our episode "The Persian Bun".  #thunderbay #thunderbayhistory #ontariohistory #ww11 #canadianhistory #bakinghistory #canadianbaking #foodhistory #thepersian #ww1 #podcasts #historypodcast #cbcpodcasts #secretlifeofcanada

School photos, but make it late 19th century. 🎙️🐄 Since this week's podcast episode is about the Huntsville Female College (1851-1895), I wanted to share some student photos here on the grid. While the names of the students aren't identified, there are a few hints as to their status as HFC attendees. 🎙️🐄 The most telling clues are the medallions/awards worn by the girls in slides 2, 3, and 4. These were given at the end of the school year to commemorate highest marks in classics, public speaking, music, housekeeping, and other categories. If you zoom waaaaaaaay in, you can make out the lettering on some of the ones I've posted here. 🎙️🐄 To learn more about this local, all-women's college (including it's curriculum, interesting rules, fun student newspapers, and that time they accepted bacon as payment for tuition), you can learn more on the podcast! Stream it wherever you stream things. 🎙️🐄 Photos courtesy @hmcplalabama Special Collections 💜 with contrast/brightness edits by me 🎙️🐄 #huntsvilleal #huntsvillealabama #huntsvillepodcast #alabamahistory #alabamapodcast #historypodcast #historicphoto

🚨New Episode🚨 In the latest episode I will be in conversation with historian Emma Southon (@emmasouthon), author of the recently published A Rome of One’s Own: The Forgotten Women of the Roman Empire. In our conversation we will be looking specifically at the life of Tullia Minor and the woman she is most often depicted as a foil to, Lucretia. This discussion was an enlightening look into the lives of two Roman women as well as the wider concept of women’s agency and erasure throughout the past. I am excited for you all to listen to this one. #herstory #history #emmasouthon #rome #romanhistory #ancienthistory #antiquity #historians #lucretia #tullia #wickedwomen #podcast #historypodcast

It is my pleasure to introduce this three part mini-series, Bioarchaeology, the past, present, and future OUT NOW! Cover art was designed and created by the talented @archaeoink This series has been almost 9 months in the making and I’m so excited to share it with all of you. The idea behind this series was a direct response to the conversations I had with my fellow graduate students in class. We all share similar experiences where when we tell our family and friends we study bioarchaeology, they don’t know what it is, causing us to realize how little the public knows about our field of study. Therefore, this series tackles introducing bioarchaeology in an understandable yet nuanced way, that explains the discipline to the public while also hopefully allowing opportunities for further exploration of complex topics. It features interviews with Dr. Jane Buikstra, Dr. Clark Larsen, Dr. Gwen Robbins Schug, Dr. Amy Anderson (@autobiography_of_red), Dr. Haagen Klaus, PhD student Meg Hardie (@authropologist) and Dr. Jessica O’Reilly. A huge thank you goes out to these people for their contributions to this project. If you are an anthropology student (or enthusiast) and you’ve always wanted to learn about bioarchaeology this series is for you! Or if you are a bioarchaeology student and you want to learn more about technological developments or ethical considerations, you’ll love the second and third episodes especially. And if you are someone who has also been asked “what is bioarchaeology” share this series with the people in your life who want to learn more about what you do! #bioarchaeology #bioarcheology #archaeology #archeology #archaeologist #bioarchaeologist #sciencecommunication #historylovers #ancienthistory #sciencepodcast #historypodcast #anthropology #anthropologist #anthropologypodcast #archaeologypodcast #fyp #fypage #spotifyforpodcasters #spotifypodcast #thatanthropodcast #learnhistory #bioarqueologia #archaeologymuseum #arqueologia #skeleton #osteology #humanosteology #physicalanthropology #osteoarchaeology #skeletalremains

If you listened to Episode 238, @anecdotalatl shared the story of the birth of NASCAR and race car driver Raymond Parks. Parks favorite mechanic was Louis Jerome “Red” Vogt. Red Vogt built a reputation for developing the Ford V8, knowing how to customize and make them go faster - and he did this in this garage on Spring Street, where he opened in 1934. Vogt was also the preferred mechanic for moonshiners and day trippers, and so he built a false wall in his garage. At the front, he had the police cars and he had the respectable citizens of Atlanta’s cars being fixed, and the back was full of all the trippers cars. In the 2000s, the building was home to Earwax Records. #archiveatlanta #archiveatl #archiveatlantapodcast #atlantapodcast #atlpodcast #historypodcast #atlantahistory #nascarhistory #autohistory #redvogt
