John H. Reagan left Tennessee for Texas in 1839. As part of the Texas Militia he led the successful fight against the Cherokees in their final battle. He helped form Henderson and Van Zandt Counties before becoming a judge and then getting elected to Congress. Reagan also helped frame the Texas Constitution, served in Senate, and held the first Railroad Commissioner position until 1903. This guy did every successful thing someone could do in Texas in the 1800’s! He died in 1905 and is buried in Palestine. Bullard took thousands of portraits of regular people of Worcester, Massachusetts in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This very brightly painted home I just loved. I know half of you will hate it but I don't even care because it looks like some old woman who lived in a shoe built this place. This is the Washington C. DePauw House at 714 East Main Street in New Albany, Indiana. It was built in 1870 with a design by local architect and builder George B.F. Cooper for Washington C. DePauw as his winter home. DePauw (who also donated money to a college that then named itself after him, in case you were wondering) had his fingers in many pies but the most notable was the American Plate Glass Works, which was the largest such company in the United States at the time. The cast iron fence and urns are original to the property. Pablo Picasso pictured in the 1950’s with his revolvers. Picasso was born in Málaga, Spain in 1881, but due to a difficult birth was falsely pronounced stillborn by the midwife. The midwife set Picasso aside on a table whilst attending his mother, luckily Picasso’s uncle was present (who was a doctor) and was smoking a cigar and decided to blow cigar smoke in the infant Picasso’s face, to which Picasso reacted with a loud cry, proving that he was very much alive. . First of all, sorry for the lack of clarity of the image, but I wanted to show it to you because for me it shows a part of Halloween that connects with many (including me): Fear, but real fear. Honestly, this picture makes me very uncomfortable. Maybe because it is not the typical photogenic ghost or one that looks spectacular in a portrait. Who are they? Why did they dress like that? Let's talk about some royal fashion! (An extra long post on celebration of 400 darling followers!!) The only surviving royal wedding dress from the Georgian period, it was worn by Princess Charlotte in 1816 for her marriage to Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburh-Saalfeld. It was rather a private ceremony and at the time it was common for European royal brides to wear silver at their wedding, Charlotte's dress kept up with the tradition whilst adopting current trends. This dress has traditional features of Robe de Cour (a grand habit)- layered sleeves and a train. But the high waistline and loose silhouette copy the popular styles of the regency period. The appearance of the dress was created through the use of silver lama (a specialist type of embroidery), produced by binding strips of silver or gold 'thread' onto a net base. The gown was made by Mrs Triaud, a London-based dressmaker with an atelier in Bolton Street. The manteau fastened at the front with an 'ornament of diamonds' and Charlotte accessorised the dress with a wreath of rose buds and leaves in "brilliants" (likely diamonds) for her headdress. The whole outfit was estimated to have cost around £10,000! It has been discovered that the dress has been significantly altered from its original form, the sleeves seem to be original, but it is believed they were later combined with another court gown, likely because textiles at the time were very labour intensive and expensive, so remodelling wasn't unusual. The skirts and train, although associated with Charlotte, may not be original to the ensemble, potentially because of the Georgian practice of repurposing and recycling.
