Continuing on the Sunday Stroll Series in Lucknow Building no 2: Farhat Baksh Kothi फरहत बक्श कोठी Situated on the right bank of Gomti river in Lucknow, this building was the residence of General Claude Martin in 1781. It was constructed in Indo-French style and was earlier known as Château de Lyon or Martin Villa. Three storeys building, with two of its storeys being basement storeys utilizing the waters of the Gomti to cool the building during the worst of the summer heat. Visitors to the château had described it as a ‘perfect museum’ and this seems accurate as we learn of the contents. There were specific areas of the estate that included the usual establishments of stables, boat-house, a well-stocked cellar, the armoury, the kitchen, the library and the picture-gallery. But there was also a riot of curiosities – telescopes, magic lantern slides, shells, skeleton, ‘electrical’ equipment, rare coins, Chinese figures, fireworks and a stuffed monkey among others things. Somewhere in the building was a large and elaborate toy theater that Martin had commissioned from Paris, with moving scenery and a barrel organ that played the latest tunes. The château was re-named Farhat Bakhsh after Martin’s death, when it was bought by the Nawab Saadat Ali Khan, brother to Asaf-ud-daula. Nawab Saadat Ali Khan (1798-1814), during his serious illness, was advised by the British resident to shift in this building. He shifted and resumed his health and renamed this building as Farhat Baksh (pleasure-giving). The guard is decorated with tiger's heads, the animal associated with Tipu Sultan, Muslim ruler of Mysore, one of the most formidable opponents of the British in India. During the late eighteenth century, Tipu, nicknamed the 'Tiger of Mysore', effectively opposed British rule in southern India. It was in campaigns like these that Arthur Wellesley, the future Duke of Wellington, said that he learnt much of his soldiering trade. The defeat of Tipu Sultan by a joint Anglo-Indian force at Seringapatam in 1799 opened India to armed conquest. The helmet was presented as a symbolic gift to Lord Cornwallis, the first Governor-General of India. Singapore’s Coin History #2 East India Company One Cent 1845 • The Straits Settlements were established in 1826. Originally consisting of the colonies of Singapore, Penang, Malacca and Dinding, they came under the administration of the East India Company. At that point of time the East India Company (EIC) was an extremely powerful entity, controlling large portions of the Indian Subcontinent as well as Southeast-Asia from its capital, Calcutta. Penang was the capital of the Straits Settlements from 1826- 1832, thereafter a switch was made, and Singapore was established as the capital. In the early days of the Straits Settlements, the EIC were trying to institute the Indian Rupee as the currency of choice. However, it was not popular, with merchants preferring other silver coins for trade, such as the Mexican 8 Reales. The one cent coin featured here is part of the first series of copper coins minted by the British for use in the Straits Settlements. The first set of coins were minted in quarter, half and one cent (100 cents= 1 dollar/ 8 Reales) denominations all bearing the date 1845. These coins were minted in Calcutta. The obverse features a young queen Victoria, who was the ruling British monarch. 11th May, 1857 I reconstruct the scene on May 11, 1857, with the help of Dastan-e-Ghadar, Tale of the Mutiny : Early every morning, devotees would come out of the walled city of #Shahjahanabad to worship the river goddess and perform a ceremonial bath. Once they were done they would go for #jharokhadarshan This tower played a crucial role in the First War of Indian Independence. At dawn on May 11, Bahadur Shah Zafar was sitting in the Musamman Burj, praying when he heard a noise and saw smoke. He was told that some ‘rebel cavalrymen’ (soldiers of the East India Company) from Meerut had rebelled against their officers and come to Delhi. Soon they were under the #MusammanBurj. As #Dehlvi narrates: “ Huzoor Jahanpanah ! May you have a long life! You are the emperor of faith and the world, and God Almighty has given you suzerainty over twenty-two provinces. The whole of India is under you and subservient to you. The people of Hindustan are counted as your subjects. They called out to the emperor to lead them against the British as the Emperor of Hindustan. Bahadur Shah Zafar called the British officers whose writ ran in Delhi in those days and asked, writes Dehlvi: “How has a religious fight reared its head? This is a case of faith and principles. Religious persecution and bigotry is a very bad thing. Many kingdoms have been destroyed by it, and innumerable people have been killed by it. Les Français en Inde (XVIIe-XVIIIe siècle) “Grand atlas de l’histoire de France”, Autrement, 2011 Au XVIe siècle, la présence européenne dans l'océan Indien est un monopole portugais. Vers 1600 de nouveaux acteurs apparaissent, les compagnies à charte, à capitaux privés mais dotées de monopoles commerciaux d'État : la British East India Company en 1600 et la Compagnie néerlandaise des Indes orientales (VOC) en 1602. Ces entreprises ne visent qu'à faire du commerce et à rémunérer leurs actionnaires sans conquérir de territoires, coûteux à maintenir. Elles se contentent de créer des comptoirs. La VOC, la plus puissante, s'intéresse avant tout à l’Insulinde, productrice d'épices, obligeant les autres à se rabattre sur l'Inde. C’est avec Richelieu que l’État incite les marchands français à s’intéresser à l’Inde. Avec la formation de la Compagnie des Indes orientales en 1664, Colbert veut s’opposer à la domination commerciale des Anglais et des Hollandais. Il envoie une flotte de 9 navires de guerre pour constituer des positions de force en Inde ; après une escale à Surat en 1671, elle fonde Pondichéry. La faiblesse des États du Sud facilite l’implantation de comptoirs. La nouvelle Compagnie des Indes, active à l’échelle de l’océan Indien, connaît un essor dans les années 1720, au point de concurrencer l’East India Company. Dans les années 1730, les Français, à la suite des Anglais, commencent à intervenir dans les affaires du pays à l’appel de souverains indiens. La guerre de Succession d’Autriche (1741–48) renforce la rivalité franco-anglaise. Utilisant les différends entre Indiens et comprenant l'intérêt des troupes locales, les cipayes, Joseph Dupleix, gouverneur de Pondichéry, contrôle le Carnatic, étend son influence au-delà de l’État d’Hyderabad, s’empare de Madras et des Circars. Mais sans appui politique, l'entreprise est fragile. Dupleix est rappelé en France. En quelques années, la compagnie anglaise renverse la tendance et conquiert le Bengale (1756), base du futur empire anglais. NSA Instagram admin update! • Hey Guys, TS and TC here! We are the administrators of the NSA Instagram account and as you’ve probably guessed, we are brothers! TS is NSA’s Assistant Secretary and he collects Conder Tokens, Straits Settlements and British Indian coinage. TC is a general committee member and collects German coinage and Singapore merchant tokens. The NSA’s Instagram account has been running for about 6 months now, so its about time for a status update! The NSA instagram account was created on 9 December 2023 following the society’s annual general meeting where a decision was made to increase our online presence. In order to reach a wider range of audience, we decided to leverage on social media and online engagement to grow our local numismatic community and share the knowledge between both experienced and new collectors. Apart from celebrating milestones of the society, local event participation and various live sessions, we have also shared our numismatic knowledge to our followers. Thus far, we have curated two series of posts showcasing Asian coins and dragon themed coins for the 2024 Lunar New Year. We aim to continually build up the knowledge bank of our instagram account through engaging posts. Our upcoming series will feature coins that were used throughout Singapore’s monetary history (Swipe to the next panel for a sneak peek 👀) A big thank you to each and every one of our followers and society members! I took these photos at an exhibition on Ranjit Singh at a gallery called the Wallace Collection in London. Before I describe a few of the photos, a brief introduction to Ranjit Singh is in order. Ranjit Singh ruled the Sikh Empire between 1801 and 1839 from its capital Lahore. The Sikh Empire governed modern-day Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa until 1848, after which the East India Company finally took over it and completed its conquest of the subcontinent. Picture 3 shows a meeting between Ranjit Singh (l) and the Maratha Confederacy's head, Jaswant Rao Holkar (r). Jaswant Rao met Ranjit Singh to enlist the Sikh Empire's support against the Company Bahadur. Ranjit Singh declined the offer. Picture 4 shows statuettes of Ranjit Singh (r) and his famous general Hari Singh Nalwa (l). Hari Singh Nalwa founded the modern-day Pakistani city of Haripur. Picture 6 shows Ranjit Singh's darbaar gathered in the Shahi Qila (Lahore Fort). While the area surrounding the Qila is now full of human development, it was green and spacious 200 years ago. Picture 7 is a page from the Tazkirat al Umara (Biography of Rulers), a book commissioned by the Company. The Farsi text states that the Company wanted Ranjit Singh to give it a few lacs so it could establish a university in Sonipat. Picture 8 is Ranjit Singh's throne. Picture 9 is a painting of the haveli of an Italian military advisor to the Sikh Empire.
