Continuing on the Sunday Stroll Series in Lucknow Building no 2: Farhat Baksh Kothi फरहत बक्श कोठी Situated on the right bank of Gomti river in Lucknow, this building was the residence of General Claude Martin in 1781. It was constructed in Indo-French style and was earlier known as Château de Lyon or Martin Villa. Three storeys building, with two of its storeys being basement storeys utilizing the waters of the Gomti to cool the building during the worst of the summer heat. Visitors to the château had described it as a ‘perfect museum’ and this seems accurate as we learn of the contents. There were specific areas of the estate that included the usual establishments of stables, boat-house, a well-stocked cellar, the armoury, the kitchen, the library and the picture-gallery. But there was also a riot of curiosities – telescopes, magic lantern slides, shells, skeleton, ‘electrical’ equipment, rare coins, Chinese figures, fireworks and a stuffed monkey among others things. Somewhere in the building was a large and elaborate toy theater that Martin had commissioned from Paris, with moving scenery and a barrel organ that played the latest tunes. The château was re-named Farhat Bakhsh after Martin’s death, when it was bought by the Nawab Saadat Ali Khan, brother to Asaf-ud-daula. Nawab Saadat Ali Khan (1798-1814), during his serious illness, was advised by the British resident to shift in this building. He shifted and resumed his health and renamed this building as Farhat Baksh (pleasure-giving). Today I took my dogs on my daily walk, a path I’ve walk more than hundred times. I stopped at the place where the trees standing further apart and where the sun could reach and touch my skin. It’s a beautiful place and as many times before I just stood there and embraced everything around me as my dogs sniffing and rolling around on the warm bed made of moss. Today I felt something different, while standing and watching the trees, a feeling I only can remember from childhood suddenly appeared. A feeling of being totally present. I felt everything all at once, the birds who was singing, a Cuckoo only a few meters away, the smells from spruce trees and earth itself and the spiderweb up among the branches who was glittering in the light of the sun. A place where no worries existed, no phones and no bills to ever pay. In this moment I traveled back in time, a past life reminded itself to me. I was a traveler, a nomad. My clothes colored as the forest itself, bags on my back and a harmonica as my company. Totally freedom. No rush, no obligations. Just me, the trees and the sounds of nature. It was beautiful, and also a life I did not see coming. Another cool mining town that we tried to get to was past Panamint springs and was called Panamint City. It was up a seriously curvy seriously unpaved road, I got us up a particularly treacherous bit of road but night was rapidly coming and I didn’t feel like maneuvering back down at night so we decided to call it quits. Perhaps because of how crazy the road is, there were the remnants of stables and a small cabin before you hit the main climb, I assume so people can rest overnight instead of trying that road with minimal lights. Im glad I could see at least these and the old mine shaft.
