🏰 Fairytale ruins in Montenegro 🇲🇪 This is one of my favorite little spots in all of the Balkans countries. I have been wanting to photograph this chapel more since we first visited in 2019. The chapel ruins were pretty epic and certainly worth the hike, I love their mystery. It seems unknown when it was actually constructed but there is at least evidence of the pope ordering repairs in the earlier 1400s so it’s clearly quite old. It’s amazing being surrounded with so much history and intrigue! Of all the trees I see on a regular basis, I have a favourite one: a huge oak tree in a secluded area of the park. A fence has been built around it, I guess to protect it from scooters, bikes, etc. But you just tell me not to pass, and it is pretty obvious I will 🤘 It stands majestic amongst all the other trees, its roots knotted and its trunk hollow in some places. Every year, at the end of winter, I wait for it to come back to life, and it always does. On Walpurgis night, at dusk, I passed by... and the fence was open. I entered, and collected some nettles that were growing in between the roots. The presence and the energy from this tree are incredible. On that night, I also collected nettles from the old abandoned farm and the chapel in ruins. I made a tincture with them. I think it is the strongest tincture I have ever made, with a dark emerald color that almost looks black unless in front of a source of light. Nettles bring resilience, strenght and protection. Often overlooked, but for me they are always a sign to tell me that I need to trust in my own strenght. #ancientoak #nettle #chapelruins #abandonedplaces

Low Friarside Chapel, Rowlands Gill Evening everyone. I'll cut to the chase, I'm very excited to tell you about Low Friarside Chapel. This is a real hidden gem, so close to some of the other places on our website, but well and truly hidden away. I discovered Low Friarside Chapel in a local history book at work, and to my delight found it still existed on private land in Rowlands Gill. A bit of digging online brought me to www.lowfriarsidefarm.co.uk and I got in touch with Ruth and John the owners of the farm about the chapel to arrange a visit. The chapel is only open to the public on the first weekend in September, so sadly the next open day is not until September 2024, but at least you can enjoy these pics in the meantime. Just over 250 years ago, precisely on July 11th, 1738, a wedding was taking place here when a piece of stonework fell and knocked the prayer-book out of the curate’s hand. No one was injured but it was decided that this 14th C. chapel had become too dangerous for further worship. Minsden Chapel served as a place of worship for the local community until the mid 1600s when it was in need of extensive repair. After repairs to the roof were completed it was used again from the early 1700s providing a place of worship for a large group of non-conformists. Well, until 1738, when a piece of stone fell during a wedding ceremony! In the meantime some of its interior was plundered and sold on the Hitchin market; pieces of stained glass were sold at auction. During the 20th C local historian and solicitor, Reginald Leslie Hine residing in Hitchin took a shine to the chapel and would often visit the site. He eventually obtained a lifetime lease from the vicars of Hitchin and declared, even after his death, he would protect the site from unruly trespassers. Reginald was later to suffer from depression and took his own life at the age of 66. His ashes were scattered at Minsden Chapel where his memorial can be seen. Hine left a big mark in the town of Hitchin; he was one of the founders of Hitchin Museum and the Hitchin Historical Society have been awarding the Reginald Hine Award since 1979. Back to Minsden Chapel! This has received extensive repair in recent years funded by National England through the Countryside Stewardship Scheme. I would really love to see the chapel turned into a beautiful garden, a tranquil and secret green escape. Minsden Chapel is located in the hamlet of Chapelfoot, partly surrounded by a small wood. With only a 20 minute drive from St Albans, we were quick on our feet this early morning to enjoy the sunshine and blue sky over Someriers Castle. Someriers Castle is located near the town of Luton in Bedfordshire and is within sight of Luton Airport. Technically there never was a castle but more precisely a moated manor house belonging to John Wenlock (1400 - 1471). He served as an MP, Speaker of the House of Commons and High Sheriff of Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire. He died in 1471 during the War of the Roses. The mansion was almost completely constructed from brick which was only recently introduced at the time. The ruins here are from the gatehouse and chapel which were part of the mansion. Apparently the formal gardens to Someriers Castle survive as a mound surrounded by a large ditch but this is on private land and not available for public exploring. The Castle had at least 25 rooms in use by 1606 but the Castle was never finished, and much of the building was pulled down in 1742. The gatehouse and chapel may have been left to provide a romantic folly across the landscaped grounds of Luton Hoo. It is said that Sir John Wenlock haunts the ruins of Someries Castle and visitors have reported strange noises from the chapel and the gatehouse. However the only noises I could hear were from the clucking chickens nearby and the noises from the aircraft taking off from Luton Airport.
