Utica Station was originally part of the Atlantic & Great Western Railroad and later part of the Western New York & Pennsylvania RR. The information I have dates the building to 1876; in conversation with the owner, he claims it was constructed during the Civil War. He leans into his claim by flying a 35 star flag which was the flag of the time. * The owner’s grandfather bought the home in the 1950s and has been in the family ever since. Canons Ashby Priory, Northamptonshire. An Augustinian priory was first established here in 1147 by Stephen le Leye, and the priory church today is particularly noted for it’s west face early English Gothic architecture. Canons Ashby is first mentioned in Domesday with a population of 16 people, although once the priory was established with 13 monks, the village soon grew considerably to the NW of the priory church. Many later documents survive which state in 1301 there were 18 taxpayers living in the village, although by 1377 there were now 82 households, with the large increase in population clearly down to the success of the priory. By the late 15th century the population growth began to reverse rapidly, and started in 1492 when the Prior enclosed 100 acres of land and rather uncharitably evicted 24 people. Actions like this did many of the religious houses harm and by 1524 there were only 21 taxpayers left in the village. At the Dissolution in 1537 when Canons Ashby was passed to the Crown, there were only 9 tenants left paying rent. In 1538 the priory and lands passed to Sir John Cope, a wealthy lawyer who set about dismantling the priory to build Canons Ashby House, although by now the village was almost deserted apart from Sir John’s staff. By the mid-15th century the medieval housing had disappeared into the land with just earthworks remaining today. All that remains of the priory is the west end of the church, a fifth of it’s original size, and now looks more like a medieval chapel with an over large tower attached. The priory church along with Canons Ashby House and gardens next door are both owned by the National Trust. The Princess Theatre was such a bright spot in downtown Decatur Alabama. This building’s history dates to 1887, when it was built as the stable to the Casa Grande Hotel. It was transformed into a theatre in 1919, showing silent movies and hosting vaudeville acts. I’ve attached a few older photos of this theatre; it was completely remodeled in 1941, taking on the current art deco design and brightly colored marque. The Princess Theatre was purchased by the city of Decatur in 1978, saving it from demolition.
