The Paris Theatre in Portland, OR. In 1890 it opened as the Third Avenue Theatre showing burlesque. It was later renamed the Paris and showed movies before a very long stint as an adult theatre. It was a nightclub in the early 2000s, before being an adult theatre again from 2007 until 2016. On the same block as popular Voodoo Donuts, it had a sharp contrast with the lines just a few doors away, they had more than just adult films being shown. It then became an events venue and nightclub again until closing in 2019, and has been closed ever since. The Alabama Theatre is such a grand movie palace. The theatre was built in 1927 and has 2500 seats. Downtown Birmingham declined in the 1960s and 1970s, resulting in the closure of many theaters. The Alabama went through ownership changes and bankruptcy, before being purchased by the nonprofit group, Birmingham Landmarks, in 1987. This group gave the Alabama Theatre a complete restoration. Happy 39th reopening anniversary to the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles, one of L.A.'s earliest major preservation victories! • The theatre originally opened in October 1931 as the Warner Bros Western Theater, its stunning Art Deco interior designed by architect G. Albert Lansburgh. • By 1934, Warner Bros were out and it was renamed the Wiltern Theatre, a portmanteau of the street names at the busy intersection of the theatre's location: Wilshire Boulevard and Western Avenue. • The theatre and surrounding building were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in February 1979, then just two months later the building owners applied for a permit to demolish the theatre building. • Following outcry from concerned parties such as the then recently formed Los Angeles Conservancy and the American Film Institute (AFI), in July 1980 real estate developer Wayne Ratkovich partnered with investors to save and restore the building and theatre. • Ratkovich would go on to become a titan of reclamation and restoration across L.A.'s urban landscape, right up until his passing in September of last year at age 82. The Trail Drive-In, originally located at 910 SE Military Drive, opened on April 28, 1946 with Randolph Scott in ‘Abilene Town’ (and a cartoon that nobody knows the name of except for the folks’ who were there that nite) and was San Antonio’s first drive-in equipped with in-car speakers. Sold to Santikos in 1973, it transitioned to adult films the following year before closing permanently in 1984. In an unexpected turn, the good ol’ Trail Drive-In reopened for one nite-only for the filming of a 1985 Mercury Topaz commercial just before it was demolished. This is not Miami. The original Art Deco gem, the Odeon Cinema is located in South London in the borough of Beckenham. The grade II listed building opened on 22nd September 1930 as a Regal Cinema. Among the facilities on offer were a fully equipped stage, a ballroom, a restaurant located on the ground floor and a Wurlitzer Model F 2Manual/8Rank theatre organ. It was operated by County Cinemas and in 1936 was taken over by the Union Cinemas chain. It was later an ABC Cinema for many years and closed in November 1978 for conversion into a triple screen cinema. The balcony remained intact as Screen 1 with a seating capacity of 587 which re-opened on 21st December 1978. Odeon Cinemas Group took control in 2000 and proposed plans to convert the building into six screens. There was some controversy over the conversion of the ballroom into an extra screen, as this contained a great deal of the original Art Deco decoration and stained-glass windows. The conversion went ahead and the six screen Odeon re-opened on 19th September 2001. The former ballroom is now Screen 2 with 207 seats, although a lot of the original decorative details have been retained, they are covered over. Screen 5 is located in the former front stalls area, using the original proscenium opening, and seats 207. Screen 6, also seating 207 is located on the former stage. The former restaurant is now an extension of the foyer and is used as a coffee bar.
