This was actually the only time she held a firearm, as she was only a reporter and a translator assisting Mikhail Koltsov, a correspondent of the Soviet newspaper Pravda. Open until July 2024, 'The Harlem Renaissance and Transatlantic Modernism' at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. This major exhibition includes Roland Penrose's 1937 photograph of Ady Fidelin alongside her friends Lee Miller Nusch Eluard and Leonora Carrington. That same year, Ady Fidelin made history as the first Black model to appear in a major American fashion magazine. Like many at the time, the publisher of Harpers Bazaar, William Randolph Hearst, prohibited the use of Black models in his publications. Yet somehow, possibly with the help of Bazaar's pioneering editor Carmel Snow, a photograph of Ady, taken by her lover Man Ray, featured in the magazine's September 1937 issue. Ady would feature in over 400 photographs, paintings and drawings by Man Ray, as well as photographs by Lee Miller and Roland Penrose, such as this one. Despite the masses of documentation, it's only recently that Ady has been re-established in the narrative of art history. This photograph is included in the exhibition of over 160 works exploring the comprehensive and far-reaching ways in which Black artists portrayed everyday modern life. 1937 Benelli M36 | Italy 🇮🇹 Benelli arms are known all over the world, but the company started out as a motorbike manufacturer and was very successful in the national championship in the up to 200cc class. Benelli tricycle entered the service of the Royal Italian Army in 1936 in order to accelerate motorisation of infantry units. It received its baptism of fire in the Spanish Civil War, where it was also used to tow the 20 mm anti-aircraft gun ‘Breda’. The machine was highly appreciated by the military for its reliability, especially by the motorised cavalry and special police. In wartime, the tricycle protected airports from enemy raids, and its colour, grey-blue, is typical of Air Force transport. The M36 is fitted with a Breda SAFAT machine gun for 7.7mm ammunition. This model of machine gun was originally mounted on aircraft, but later was also used on ground vehicles, as an air defence weapon. The tricycle has a maximum speed of 72.6 km/h and a payload of 400 kg. The model was equipped with a single-cylinder overhead valve engine with a capacity of 493.6 cc, rated at 13 hp at 4500 rpm. 1930s Spanish in the Hancock Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, CA. So many amazing vintage homes on the market right now and luckily we have @alexander.lerner to capture these incredible in person shots. Original exterior tiled arches set the stage for this beautiful home. We’ve seen exterior tile work on homes before, but this is extensive. The amount of tile used speaks to this space being higher end when built. I will get to the amazing vintage tiled bathrooms in tomorrows post, but for the time being let’s review the vintage tiled kitchen. You can see how this beige tile works with different lighting in this space. In natural light it takes on a warm yellow shade. In absence of light it’s more beige. Note the heavy crazing in the tiles in image #10, see definition of Crazing below: “Crazing refers to the formation of a network of fine cracks on the surface of glazed ceramics caused by tension between the ceramic body and the glaze.” Source: conservation-wiki.com/wiki/crazing In other words, these are micro cracks in the glaze. These are NOT cracks in the actual tile nor do they impact the durability of the tile. It’s important to explain this as people often think of this phenomena as damage, when it’s not. Day 9 Green! I’ve been waiting for this prompt! This is my absolute favorite color in just about every hue. First up, channeling the great Marlene Dietrich we have a green tuxedo vest made of a cotton sateen worn with black silk/linen blend tuxedo pants. Second, we’ve got a 1940s play suit made of some bright green linen and a skirt made of the greatest cotton block print Third we have my hand knit green sweater made from a 1930s knitting pattern. I have to make just a couple of tweaks to it still so I haven’t worn it again… it’s in my mending pile… lord give me the fortitude to actually do it Last is that 30s pink dress from the pink day but this is what she looks like now!
