Our superfun Chaplin Days weekend ended with a bang! . We went on a steam train from Niles to Sunol and back, then heard an amazing presentation from Chaplin expert Dan Kamin (and got to have dinner with him after.) . Rudolph Valentino fencing at his estate Falcon Lair, Bel Air, Los Angeles, 1925. Falcon Lair was built by Rudolph Valentino in 1925. Rudolph named his estate after the screenplay The Hooded Falcon that was written for him by his wife Natacha Rambova. Sadly he would only own it for a year as he died very suddenly in 1926. It was more like a show home than an actual home, having visitors to Falcon Lair say it felt more like a movie set than a place to relax in. Rudolph Valentino was a huge lover of dogs and horses, with the dogs acting as safety guards and the horses having their own stable. A very beautiful home down up right by Rudolph Valentino himself. Unfortunately this lavish estate was demolished. Falcon Lair was bulldozed in 2006 to make way for a new mansion.

After two decades of touring Germany, the planets (and itinerary) finally aligned and Blitzkid found itself with a day off just outside of Berlin. As such, I was able to make a long awaited pilgrimage to the the final resting place of Max Schreck- the actor who in 1922 portrayed the first and most enduring screen vampire- Count Orlok (aka Nosferatu). Herr Schreck (who died in 1936) was presumed to be buried in Munich, but decades later a journalist doing research on Berlin cemeteries discovered that he was actually buried with his mother just outside of Berlin. The Film Park in nearby Babelsburg thus commissioned the gravestone pictured and donated it to the cemetery and this previously unmarked site as a means of tribute. The ground surrounding his grave was infested with an army of very large, (and hungry) mosquitos that took a blood offering for my interloping- but considering whom I was there to visit it felt like the least I could give. And if anyone’s wondering, that’s not a mosquito bite on my nose- I broke it last night at WGT 😄 (Both great endings to an all-around great week here in good ol’ Deutschland)! Today in 1908, director Otis Turner’s cinematic adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde premiers in Chicago. The movie stars Hobart Bosworth as Jekyll and Hyde and Betty Harte in her silver screen debut as Alice, a character who does not appear in the book. It is widely considered the first American horror film. The movie is not a direct adaptation of The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, but rather an adaptation of a play based on the novel, and it deviates noticeably from the original story. A Glimpse in the Museum: From the family library we are highlighitng the1904 romance Beverly of Graustark, written by George Barr McCutcheon. Beverly of Graustark, a popular book from Theresa's girlhood, is about an American Beverly Calhoun visiting the fictional European nation of Graustark and impersonating a royal member of the family to protect the throne- hijinks and drama naturally ensue. It was adapted twice to screen in Theresa's youth: in 1914 starring Linda Arvidson where Beverly impersonates the princess, and in 1926 starring Marion Davies where Beverly impersonates the prince. Paramount Stars on Parade:1919-1926) No star of the silent era was more glittering, more glamourous or more movie star-like than legendary Gloria Swanson (1899-1983). At her height receiving 10,000 fan letters a week and the first star to earn $1M a year. She herself said “All they had to do was put my name on a marquee and watch the money roll in”. Her story was as incredible as her career. Discovered while touring a film studio she started as an extra at 14, then in comedy shorts with first husband Wallace Beery, then slapstick comedies for Mack Sennett. She became a major star with director Cecil B. DeMille in the hits “Don’t Change Your Husband”, “Male and Female”, “The Affairs of Anatol” with Wallace Reid, “Beyond the Rocks” with Valentino, “Her Gilded Cage”, “Zaza”, “Manhandled”. The hits were endless - 20 in a row - with audiences just coming to see what she would be wearing and equally dazzled by her off screen opulent life including marrying a French Marquis. She was a Top 10 Box-office star from 21, 23-25. Despite a phenomenal offer for her to stay at Paramount she wanted more control. After a disastrous start she hit with “Sadie Thompson” for which she received an Oscar nomination. Sound proved no problem for her with “The Trespasser” a smash and another nomination. The ill fated “Queen Kelly” never released was almost as interesting as her relationship with its producer Joseph Kennedy millionaire father of JFK. Her career slowed in the early 30’s so she moved to NYC where she started a patents and Inventions company, theater, painting and sculpting, TV and then in her greatest. Norma Desmond in Wilder’s “Sunset Boulevard” was so spectacular that audiences thought she was playing herself. This film noir look at Hollywood has never been topped. She was nominated again for an Oscar. More TV, more theater and an occasional film, notably playing herself (no one could better play Swanson than Swanson) in the smash disaster film “Airport 1975”. A star who looked and always lived like a movie star she remains one of the greatest of cinemas birth a century ago. As Norma Desmond once said “I am big, it’s the pictures that got small!”

Undead 🧟♂️ Undead 🦇 An image from DW Griffith’s 1926 adaptation of Marie Corelli’s 1895 novel THE SORROWS OF SATAN. Griffith’s film was the third of at least three cinematic versions of Corelli’s bestseller. . The first film adaptation of THE SORROWS OF SATAN was released in 1917, directed by Alexander Butler in England. The second appeared in 1920’s LEAVES FROM SATAN’S BOOK (“Blade af Satans Bog”), an anthology film directed by Carl Theodor Dreyer (of later VAMPYR fame). The first film adaptation of THE SORROWS OF SATAN was released in 1917, directed by Alexander Butler in England. The second appeared in 1920's LEAVES FROM SATAN'S BOOK ("Blade af Satans Bog"), an anthology film directed by Carl Theodor Dreyer (of later VAMPYR fame).
