That’s because the surviving film was a censored cut; it wasn’t until Mike Mashon discovered a pre-release version at the @librarycongress in 2004 that this encounter between Chico (Theresa Harris), Lily (Barbara Stanwyck), and a brakeman (James Murray) finally saw the light of day! Swipe to see the stark differences between the pre-release and release versions of this scene. (The uncensored version is split into 2 clips; Instagram isn’t showing videos longer than a minute.) Many other parts suffered minor edits, as you can see if you keep swiping; the differences fill four pages. This correspondence is from the film’s Production Code Administration file, courtesy of the Academy’s Margaret Herrick Library. Joe Orlando penciled and Wally Wood inked this amazing cover! The yellow backdrop is almost illuminated! Green Death flails the forceps to attack the Spacemen with a Red Dragon! A lumpy, oozy, and rheumy Green nightmare! How cool! Here's the splash page for, "The Shark Pirates of Pisces!" I now give you "Science vs. Sorcery!" for your illumination and elucidation. Orlando and Wood crafted all these interior pages. Frenetic, complex, and truly lovely finished art. Science Fiction is used as a genre to deliver really kind of a PCH tale. The story is frustrating and convoluted...but the answer at the end was so magoo I had to blow up the panel! LOL! There are only 37 copies of this book extant on the CGC Census, 33 of which are Blue-Labels. Thinking of PLATINUM BLONDE (1931), the only film the legendary Frank Capra made with Harlow, as I would be on Capra’s birthday. Although not the warmest with each other on set (and there are no known pictures of them together), Capra took notice of the twenty-year-old’s best traits hiding under her insecurities and inexperience: “Jean Harlow loved to laugh. She was just a child. She wanted to learn all the time. She was absolutely ignorant of stage sayings. She pronounced words very oddly, very childlike; like ”liberry” instead of “library”. [...] I remember telling her to go home when her scenes were finished, she’d always stick around the set, watch the others, trying to learn how to become an actress.” Although ‘liberry’ was a problem enough to cause fourteen straight retakes for Harlow, her curiosity and drive to learn and improve makes it especially obvious how her talent was being willfully neglected in order to capitalize on her physical image. That being said, Harlow is still the flesh and blood of PLATINUM BLONDE; while effectively Loretta Young’s film, it is Harlow that makes it unforgettable; not to mention how the two words in the title now have a permanent residence in the pop culture lexicon. It’s easy for the average watcher to wave off Harlow’s performance in PLATINUM BLONDE without knowing the context behind it; the film was renamed simply to capitalize on her hair (something she was all too aware of). Comparing it with RED-HEADED WOMAN (1932), released under a year later, is like watching a flower bloom. 📸: A Columbia publicity sheet for PLATINUM BLONDE, featuring a velvet-wrapped Clarence Sinclair Bull portrait taken in December of 1930 for MGM’s THE SECRET SIX (1931).

MGM tries its hand at the backstage musical, and where else are you gonna see Joan Crawford dancing while the Three Stooges (egged on by bully Ted Healey) cause mayhem around her, and then see her dance alongside Fred Astaire (in his film debut) on a flying cylinder into a bizarre Bavarian beer number. And lots of precode fun too, it starts off in a strip hall where Joan is a down on her luck stripper alongside a whole group of girls who all get arrested for public indecency.
