Indestructible Object, Man Ray, 1923 Media: Wooden metronome and photograph, black and white, on paper Man Ray made the first version of this object shortly after his companion, the American photographer and model Lee Miller, left him. Attaching a photograph of Miller’s eye to the metronome, he linked his memory of her to the idea of an insistent beat or pulse that was both irksome and unending – a metaphor, perhaps, for human desire. He smashed the original, which he had titled Object to be Destroyed. In May 1943, Lee Miller reported on US nurses working at Oxford's Churchill Hospital. This was the first of her postings as an accredited photojournalist. Lee paints a picture of orderly but relentless working days. 'There the patients range from G.I Joe, who got out too far on the big apple tree, to a lad back from too close attention in bombing the continent; but mostly men suffering from frostbite of high altitudes, exposure in open boats, and wounds of just plain heroism.’ Many famous US hospitals had organised mobile hospital units before the country joined WWII, so they were well-prepared to move into a war zone at a moment’s notice. ‘Treatment is carried through the miraculous surgery of our times - grafting, splicing, welding of bones, tissues, nerves, through the infinitely painstaking care of nursing, recuperation and rehabilitation.’ Lee’s article continues: 'Each girl has her own job: operating theatre, plaster cast room, general nursing, therapy, ward supervisor, etc., but all, being generally mobile, are prepared to be detached for duty in the field.’ . . . Over the next few days, we’ll be sharing extracts from Lee’s first piece of photojournalism as an accredited war correspondent, published in the May 1943 edition of British Vogue. ‘The Presbyterian Hospital of New York’, Lee wrote, ‘has taken over the Churchill Hospital in Oxford which was a gift of America to England. Titled ‘American Army Nurses Photographed and Described by Lee Miller’, the photographs document the nurses on duty – performing physical therapy, prepping for surgery- and off duty; eating ‘American food’ in the mess hall, drying their laundry or socialising out-of-hours. Lee reported: 'There the patients range from G.I. "Cuándo se descubrió que la información era un negocio, la verdad dejó de ser importante." • Ryszard Kapuściński Desde el 3 de mayo de 1993, se conmemora el Día Internacional de la Libertad de Prensa, instaurado por la ONU para que sea un día en el se evalúa la situación actual del periodismo mundial, promover acciones contra nuevas amenazas y rendir homenaje a los compañeros que han perdido la vida haciendo su trabajo. Aunque fue hace varios días, les comparto algunos datos extra (pueden deslizar las imágenes para verlos) como ¿qué es la libertad de prensa?, recomendaciones cinéfilas y la mención de algunos periodistas conocidos que han hecho historia y cuyas vidas me llaman la atención -a riesgo de que falten muchos nombres por mencionar-. El periodismo es un ambiente versátil y peligroso. Entre los ejemplos de distintas épocas atrás, aparecen los siguientes nombres: ‣ Elizabeth "Lee Miller": Fotógrafa estadounidense que con su intrépida personalidad, se adentraba hasta el centro de los conflictos para conseguir las fotografías que retrataran la realidad de la guerra. ‣ Oriana Fallaci: Periodista italiana reconocida por su estilo directo y personal al momento de entrevistar, herramientas que perduran en el periodismo actual. Fue corresponsal de guerra varios años, en Vietnam, India, Medio Oriente y Latinoamérica. ‣ Truman Capote: Destacado periodista estadounidense, escribió el reconocido libro "A sangre fría", mezclando el movimiento llamado "Nuevo Periodismo" y siendo considerado uno de los pioneros de la novela de no-ficción. ‣ Rodolfo Walsh: Periodista argentino de renombre. Comenzó escribiendo novelas policiacas y reportajes culturales hasta que decidió denunciar la situación social de su país convirtiéndose en periodista de investigación. El 25 de marzo de 1997 fue emboscado y acribillado injustamente, volviéndolo otra víctima de la violencia de la dictadura. ‣ Víctor Hugo: Recordado por sus libros, este novelista francés también escribía para periódicos, donde se notaba su increíble estilo literario. • ¿Hay algún periodista que admiren? Creció con ello. Por su belleza indiscutible, pudo iniciar una carrera de modelo para Vogue, y durante los años 20 fue quizás la más famosa y fotografiada de Nueva York. Sin embargo, Miller quiso empezar una carrera ella misma como fotógrafa artística y se fue a París. En 1929 estaba como aprendiz de Man Ray (y hay quien dice que muchas de las fotos atribuidas a él eran en realidad de ella). Una cosa llevó a la otra, y se convirtieron en amantes. París era el centro del universo en la época, y Lee Miller estaba siempre por ahí, con Ray, con Picasso etc. Pero cuando acabó su relación, se volvió a los USA y se estableció como fotógrafa de éxito. I wanted to see this place because of its significance during WWII and to photographer Lee Miller. In questi quaranta minuti interminabili di attesa del mio volo (perché diciamocelo, i momenti prima dell'imbarco non passano mai), ripenso a questo libro, a questa donna, anima inquieta che ha viaggiato e vissuto fino in fondo la sua vita. O forse no. Serena Dandini parla di Lee Miller, donna che ha avuto un'importante rilevanza a livello artistico all'inizio del ventesimo secolo, in tutte quelle correnti che finiscono con "Ismo" (per citare qualcuno di poco gradito), ma la sua figura è emersa solo negli ultimi anni, nascosta nella soffitta della sua casa, e riscoperta dal figlio Antony. Il libro ripercorre la storia della Miller, intervallata molto, forse troppo spesso, dai punti di vista della Dandini, concentrandosi maggiormente sulla sua esperienza come reporter per Vogue durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale, di come questa esperienza l'abbia cambiata dentro, e di come si è definitivamente persa, dopo anni di ricerca di sé stessa. CONSIGLIO QUESTO LIBRO? Parliamone. A livello di scrittura, ho adorato il modo di scrivere della Dandini, mi ha riportata in posti mai visitati, me li ha fatti vedere chiaramente. Insomma, ho visitato Parigi dalla poltrona del terrazzo🗼 Ma se il suo intento era scrivere una biografia, mi dispiace, ma questo è un romanzo. E anche molto "romanzato". ERGO: SÌ, se cercate un bel romanzo basato su un personaggio storico. NO, se cercate una biografia precisa e chiara.
