📍The Gaumont State Theatre Towering over Kilburn High Road, this 1930s art deco gem was once Europe's largest cinema. It remains the third largest ever built in the UK. It was designed in the style of a New York skyscraper (it's 120 feet tower is said to have been a tribute to the Empire State Building) and can be seen for miles around. During its heyday, stars including Buddy Holly, the Beatles and the Rolling Stones performed here. The Gaumont State shut its doors in 1980 and it's now a church, after a stint as a bingo hall. It remains one of Kilburn's most iconic landmarks. #londonblogger #londongram #londonlover #londonarchitecture #artdeco #londonartdeco #artdecoarchitecture #londonbylondoners #hiddengems #hiddengemslondon #brent #kilburn #nw2 #nwlondon #urbanphotography #thisislondon #visitlondon #londonarchitecture #englisharchitecture #architecture #architecturephotography #londonphotography #londonphoto #cityphotography

For World Art Deco Day here’s something fun: Eltham Palace in Greenwich. A couple called the Courtaulds built a 1930s house on to a 1470 banquet hall that was built for Edward 1V, one of my fav English kings. In the old days Eltham Palace was also the childhood home of Henry Vlll but it eventually went to rack and ruin as it fell out of favour with later kings. Then the Courtaulds stepped in and restored the hall and built this wonderful home that is homage to art deco with Swedish wood interiors, ocean liner imagery and all the sleekness we have come to appreciate of the period which lasted until around 1939. Eltham Palace is now in the care of English Heritage and we liked their enthusiastic staff and volunteers. I haven’t done the interiors justice but I hope you like them. Picture three shows the house with a bit of the medieval hall. Tomorrow more about the hall and grounds! #elthampalace #eltham #mottingham #artdeco #worldartdecoday #england #photosofbritain #photosofengland #myprettyengland #london #myprettylondon #historichousesofbritain #englishheritage #englishhouses #artdecoarchitecture #artdecobeauties #londonartdeco #artdecointerior #artdecolondon #historicpalaces #beautifulhouses #beautifulengland #beautifuldestinations #loveengland

This is not Miami. The original Art Deco gem, the Odeon Cinema is located in South London in the borough of Beckenham. The grade II listed building opened on 22nd September 1930 as a Regal Cinema. Among the facilities on offer were a fully equipped stage, a ballroom, a restaurant located on the ground floor and a Wurlitzer Model F 2Manual/8Rank theatre organ. It was operated by County Cinemas and in 1936 was taken over by the Union Cinemas chain. It was later an ABC Cinema for many years and closed in November 1978 for conversion into a triple screen cinema. The balcony remained intact as Screen 1 with a seating capacity of 587 which re-opened on 21st December 1978. Odeon Cinemas Group took control in 2000 and proposed plans to convert the building into six screens. There was some controversy over the conversion of the ballroom into an extra screen, as this contained a great deal of the original Art Deco decoration and stained-glass windows. The conversion went ahead and the six screen Odeon re-opened on 19th September 2001. The former ballroom is now Screen 2 with 207 seats, although a lot of the original decorative details have been retained, they are covered over. Screen 5 is located in the former front stalls area, using the original proscenium opening, and seats 207. Screen 6, also seating 207 is located on the former stage. The former restaurant is now an extension of the foyer and is used as a coffee bar. These are two stairs which we gave a design uplift at Vincent House in Pimlico. The building was built as offices in the 1930s but coverted into residential apartments in the 1980s. The stair and handrail are original but all the finishes including the marble are our new choices. The doors, lighting, joinery and floor/wall finishes are all part of our new design. Hope you like it and thanks for reading 🙂 #artdeco #artdecodesign #artdecointeriors #interiordesign #1930s #londonartdeco #stairdesign #commonparts

Finally I found time to visit the BBC Broadcasting House in Portland Place and Langham Place, London. The first radio broadcast from the iconic building was made on 15 March 1932, and the building was officially opened two months later, on 15 May. The main building is in Art Deco style, with a facing of Portland stone over a steel frame. It is a Grade II* listed building and includes the BBC Radio Theatre, where music and speech programmes are recorded in front of a studio audience. As part of a major consolidation of the BBC’s property portfolio in London, Broadcasting House has been extensively renovated and extended. This involved the demolition of post-war extensions on the eastern side of the building, replaced by a new wing completed in 2005. The wing was named the „John Peel Wing“ in 2012, after the disc jockey (Wikipedia). . . ©SCRITTI #travel #traveling #architecture #architektur #history #midcentury #modernism #modernist #modernistarchitecture #1930sarchitecture #artdeco #artdecouk #artdecoarchitecture #artdecobuilding #london #londonartdeco #londonhouses #1930shouse #suburbia #bauhaus #londonmodernarchitecture #bbc #broadcastinghouse #headquarters #scritti

Ealing Common Station in West London is a London Underground Station in the typical Art Deco style of famous Tube architect Charles Holden from 1931. It seems like not much has changed during the last 93 years and there are still a lot of features from the 1930s like the two shops on the left and right of the entrance hall or the platforms with concrete roofs. The original station was opened on 1 July 1879 by the District Railway (now the District line) on its extension from Turnham Green to Ealing Broadway. During 1930 and 1931, a new station building was constructed to replace the old one. The new building, by Charles Holden in a style reminiscent of his designs for the 1926 Morden line extension (now part of the Northern line), was constructed in Portland stone and features a tall heptagonal ticket hall with glazed screens to all sides. The new building opened on 1 March 1931 (wikipedia). An Art Deco gem in Dalston: The Rio Cinema is a Grade II listed independent Art Deco cinema in Dalston, east London. It is a popular independent cinema located on Kingsland High Street, with a history stretching back over 100 years. In 1933 the former cinema was purchased from Clara Ludski by London & Southern Cinemas Ltd, and in 1936 by Capital & Provincial News Theatres. The building was refurbished in Art Deco style by cult architect F.E. Bromige in 1937 and reopened as the Classic Cinema Dalston, within the shell of the earlier cinema. The ceiling and upper walls of the earlier auditorium survive, only accessible from the roof. As many cinemas were remodelled with the arrival of sound in the 1930s, nowhere else are two very different auditoria found one within the other. According to English Heritage, this is „an exceptionally rare survival“. The exterior has remained almost unchanged since the 1930s (Wikipedia). . . ©SCRITTI #travel #traveling #architecture #architektur #history #midcentury #modernism #modernist #modernistarchitecture #1930sarchitecture #artdeco #artdecouk #artdecoarchitecture #artdecobuilding #london #londonartdeco #londonhouses #1930shouse #hackney #bauhaus #londonmodernarchitecture #dalston #eastlondon #cinema #rio #picturehouse #kingsland #febromige #classiccinema #scritti

1931 Built as a vacuum cleaner factory with the detail representing ‘modernity and hygiene’, most of the hoovers made here were sold by door to door salesmen for £10! During World War Two, the Hoover building had to be camouflaged to protect it from being targeted by the Luftwaffe, it also made aircraft parts for the war. In 1982, vacuum cleaner production ceased and the Hoover factory closed. It reopened in 1992 as a Tesco at the back and offices at the front. Since 2018 the front of the building has been residential flats with all fitted ovens made by Hoover! #artdeco #london #architecture #londonartdeco #londonarchitecture #historiclondon

Remembering London:Greater London House. This building was constructed in 1928 for the Carreras Tobacco Company, which manufactured the famous "Black Cat" series of cigarettes, at a time of heightened interest in Egyptology following the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb in 1922, and indeed, two huge black marble cat statues guard the entrance as if it were an Egyptian cat temple. #London #GreaterLondonHouse #CarrerasTobaccoCompany #LondonArtDeco

“The Archer” East Finchley Tube Station London, England Completed 1940 Sculptor Eric Aumonier The station was completed in 1939 by architect Charles Holden, and the sculpture was unveiled in 1940 and is the work of Eric Aumonier. The Archer symbolises Finchley’s association with hunting in the Royal Forest of Enfield. It is also said that the archer embodies the modern underground system and is ‘shooting’ the commuter in the direction of central London.

Modern Spiral Staircase at the Premier Inn Hotel 1-2 Dorset Rise, London Blackfriars by Axiom Architects. The project involved the conversion of an existing 1930s office building which had subsequently been re-clad and remodelled in the 1980s. The proposed hotel included a new reception and restaurant at ground floor level with the formation of a new front entrance. The finished building (Phase 2 Completed October 2013) provided Premier Inn with a flagship hotel, their first in the City of London. The creation of new entrances and remodelling of the courtyard served to create a new public space whilst improving accessibility. Know the link between Margate Dreamland @dreamlandmargate and the former Leyton Police Station on funky Francis Road? We recently discovered that both buildings were designed by cinema architect Julian Leathart - we can 👀 some similarities. We love this nautical art deco building in Leyton and its entrance that depicts policemen through the ages . We’re not the only fans as apparently the building was submitted for a design award in the late 1940s. Built during the 1930s and opened in the 1940s, the Met @metpolice_uk claimed the station was “under-occupied, in poor condition and costly to run” and subsequently closed in 2012 and converted into flats. We loved hearing a wee bit more about its history and added link to longer article on stories on police history in the hood. #leyton #leytonstone #eastlondon #margate #localhistory #artnouveau #cinemaarchitecture #londonarchitecture #londonartdeco #artdecostyle #artdecodesign
