This is not Miami. The original Art Deco gem, the Odeon Cinema is located in South London in the borough of Beckenham. The grade II listed building opened on 22nd September 1930 as a Regal Cinema. Among the facilities on offer were a fully equipped stage, a ballroom, a restaurant located on the ground floor and a Wurlitzer Model F 2Manual/8Rank theatre organ. It was operated by County Cinemas and in 1936 was taken over by the Union Cinemas chain. It was later an ABC Cinema for many years and closed in November 1978 for conversion into a triple screen cinema. The balcony remained intact as Screen 1 with a seating capacity of 587 which re-opened on 21st December 1978. Odeon Cinemas Group took control in 2000 and proposed plans to convert the building into six screens. There was some controversy over the conversion of the ballroom into an extra screen, as this contained a great deal of the original Art Deco decoration and stained-glass windows. The conversion went ahead and the six screen Odeon re-opened on 19th September 2001. The former ballroom is now Screen 2 with 207 seats, although a lot of the original decorative details have been retained, they are covered over. Screen 5 is located in the former front stalls area, using the original proscenium opening, and seats 207. Screen 6, also seating 207 is located on the former stage. The former restaurant is now an extension of the foyer and is used as a coffee bar. Finally I found time to visit the BBC Broadcasting House in Portland Place and Langham Place, London. The first radio broadcast from the iconic building was made on 15 March 1932, and the building was officially opened two months later, on 15 May. The main building is in Art Deco style, with a facing of Portland stone over a steel frame. It is a Grade II* listed building and includes the BBC Radio Theatre, where music and speech programmes are recorded in front of a studio audience. As part of a major consolidation of the BBC’s property portfolio in London, Broadcasting House has been extensively renovated and extended. This involved the demolition of post-war extensions on the eastern side of the building, replaced by a new wing completed in 2005. The wing was named the „John Peel Wing“ in 2012, after the disc jockey (Wikipedia). . . ©SCRITTI #travel #traveling #architecture #architektur #history #midcentury #modernism #modernist #modernistarchitecture #1930sarchitecture #artdeco #artdecouk #artdecoarchitecture #artdecobuilding #london #londonartdeco #londonhouses #1930shouse #suburbia #bauhaus #londonmodernarchitecture #bbc #broadcastinghouse #headquarters #scritti

Ealing Common Station in West London is a London Underground Station in the typical Art Deco style of famous Tube architect Charles Holden from 1931. It seems like not much has changed during the last 93 years and there are still a lot of features from the 1930s like the two shops on the left and right of the entrance hall or the platforms with concrete roofs. The original station was opened on 1 July 1879 by the District Railway (now the District line) on its extension from Turnham Green to Ealing Broadway. During 1930 and 1931, a new station building was constructed to replace the old one. The new building, by Charles Holden in a style reminiscent of his designs for the 1926 Morden line extension (now part of the Northern line), was constructed in Portland stone and features a tall heptagonal ticket hall with glazed screens to all sides. The new building opened on 1 March 1931 (wikipedia). An Art Deco gem in Dalston: The Rio Cinema is a Grade II listed independent Art Deco cinema in Dalston, east London. It is a popular independent cinema located on Kingsland High Street, with a history stretching back over 100 years. In 1933 the former cinema was purchased from Clara Ludski by London & Southern Cinemas Ltd, and in 1936 by Capital & Provincial News Theatres. The building was refurbished in Art Deco style by cult architect F.E. Bromige in 1937 and reopened as the Classic Cinema Dalston, within the shell of the earlier cinema. The ceiling and upper walls of the earlier auditorium survive, only accessible from the roof. As many cinemas were remodelled with the arrival of sound in the 1930s, nowhere else are two very different auditoria found one within the other. According to English Heritage, this is „an exceptionally rare survival“. The exterior has remained almost unchanged since the 1930s (Wikipedia). . . ©SCRITTI #travel #traveling #architecture #architektur #history #midcentury #modernism #modernist #modernistarchitecture #1930sarchitecture #artdeco #artdecouk #artdecoarchitecture #artdecobuilding #london #londonartdeco #londonhouses #1930shouse #hackney #bauhaus #londonmodernarchitecture #dalston #eastlondon #cinema #rio #picturehouse #kingsland #febromige #classiccinema #scritti

1st Photography Set Housing Estate - Agar Grove / Maiden Lane London Borough of Camden Benson & Forsyth, Camden Architects Date: 1979-82 Photography by @cswillson “The estate is a very interesting example of post-war modernist social housing. It is typical of the low-rise, dual-aspect homes designed by Camden Council architects during the late 1960s and 1970s. Phase I of the estate was designed by renowned architects Gordon Benson and Alan Forsyth. In 2010 PRP Architects were appointed. They worked with the Council and residents to look at areas on the estate where new homes could be built. This includes the industrial site in its south eastern corner. In February 2013 the Council granted planning permission for the regeneration scheme. The regeneration started with the demolition of the industrial buildings in summer 2013. The construction contractor was Sisk and works completed in November 2017. The scheme has provided 273 new homes, including 74 new council homes, Camden Living homes and homes for private sale. There is also low-cost employment space, and retail and café uses.” #moderndesign #modernistbuilding #modern #londonmodernarchitecture #modernhome #architecture #london

Modern Spiral Staircase at the Premier Inn Hotel 1-2 Dorset Rise, London Blackfriars by Axiom Architects. The project involved the conversion of an existing 1930s office building which had subsequently been re-clad and remodelled in the 1980s. The proposed hotel included a new reception and restaurant at ground floor level with the formation of a new front entrance. The finished building (Phase 2 Completed October 2013) provided Premier Inn with a flagship hotel, their first in the City of London. The creation of new entrances and remodelling of the courtyard served to create a new public space whilst improving accessibility. After the show… There it sits in all its glory! The purpose-built ABBA arena near Stratford‘s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park hosting the fabulous show ABBA Voyage with the four ABBA members acting as virtual avatars. It’s built opposite the DLR station Pudding Mill Lane which Björn refers to during the show as a rather odd name that he doesn’t like. Although it’s in a rather deserted area in East London the arena already saw more than 1,6 million visitors until the end of last year and made ABBA Voyage to one of the most visited attractions in London! The architecture of the building is modern and pure in a Scandinavian style mainly made of wood. If necessary it can be dismantled and being rebuilt somewhere else. But let’s hope that the arena will remain and ABBA will play in London for the next 100 years and make people happy almost every night! Chaucer House (Churchill Gardens) London, England Constructed 1946-1949 (Phase I) Architects Philip Powell and Hidalgo Moya (Powell & Moya Architect Practice) Photo: Architectonic Travels Grade II listed Churchill Gardens in Pimlico replaced Victoria terraced housing which was damaged by bombing during World War II. The estate was built in four stages over a 16 year period after a contest was held by Westminster City Council to decide the architect. Philip Powell and Hidalgo Moya, who were then aged just 24 and 25 respectively, won the contract out of 64 entries for the £4,000,000 housing scheme.

St Olaf House London (Southwark), England Constructed 1928-1931 Architect Harry Stuart Goodhart-Rendel Grade II* listed Photo: Architectonic Travels Built as the head office of Hay’s Wharf, a warehouse and dock for the Port of London, this Art Deco conversion is now part of London Bridge Hospital. The name is derived from the fact that the structure was erected on the site of St Olave’s Church, Southwark, which was demolished in 1926. Olaf Haraldsson was an early 11th-century Norwegian king who was martyred in 1030 for attempting to convert his subjects to Christianity.

The Diana Memorial fountain in Hyde Park, designed by Gustafson Porter and completed in 2004. It’s a distinctly new kind of landscape space, abstract in form and figurative in its representation of a life. What struck me on my visit a couple of days ago is its section- both at the macro scale of the gentle incline of the site, and in the highly complex, subtle and dynamic shape of the granite walls that enclose twin channels of flowing water. I think the memorial is an amazing piece of public art- is there its equal anywhere else? #dianamemorialfountain #hydepark #londonmodernarchitecture #memorialdesign #modernmemorials #modernlandscapedesign #gustafsonporter #kathryngustafson #neilporter #abstractsculpture #waterinarchitecture

The former YMCA hostel in the Barbican, now reconfigured and renamed Blake Tower. It seems strange to say that a 16 storey tower can be disregarded, but, poised between the Barbican and Golden Lane, it generally is. Completed in 1971, and like the Barbican designed by Chamberlin Powell and Bon. But unlike the estate as a whole, I feel it’s far more accurate to describe this architecture as Brutalist: the deliberate awkwardness of its composition of discrete elements not integrated into a single form, and devoid of the composed formal references which can be seen in the rest of the Barbican. The angular escape staircase is a powerful element, and the building as a whole would be a far more commanding urban presence had it been built on a different site. #barbican #barbicanestate #barbicanymca #blaketower #chamberlinpowellandbon #brutalism #concretearchitecture #britishmodernism #londonmodernarchitecture #postwararchitecture #cityoflondon #rawconcrete #concretestaircase

Kingston Upon Thames in the southwestern part of London has a really futuristic Shopping Center almost like a Spaceship like @ianvisits pointed out. The Bentall Centre with almost 75 stores opened in 1992. It has been built in the retail space of Bentalls department store, first established on the site in 1867. Bentalls, now part of the Fenwick group, retains a large premium department store in the development. The shopping centre's atrium ceiling is higher than the nave of Westminster Abbey or the dome of St Paul's Cathedral. Commonwealth House at the corner of New Oxford Street and High Holborn from 1939 with a beautiful Art Deco clock on top. These are toilets. Beautiful stylish toilets. I discovered them when I visited Freemason‘s Hall on Open House weekend in London. They are in an Art Deco style matching with the design of the whole Art Deco building from the early 1930s by the designs of architects Henry Victor Ashley and F. Winton Newman. All the details in those toilets are really amazing. It’s a feast for they eyes, how Simon @londonsuburbia described the pleasure of Art Deco designs once. It really impresses me how architects and designers took care about every inch also inside a building to make you feel like you are moving inside a big work of art. And if you are using such a beautiful toilet for what it’s meant for you really try to keep everything as tidy as it already is. So if you ever need a toilet around Covent Garden try to get into Freemason‘s Hall and up the stairs to the first floor. . . ©SCRITTI #travel #traveling #architecture #architektur #history #midcentury #modernism #modernist #modernistarchitecture #1930sarchitecture #artdeco #artdecouk #artdecoarchitecture #artdecobuilding #london #londonartdeco #londonhouses #1930shouse #bauhaus #modernistestates #londonmodernarchitecture #freemasonry #toilet #toiletdesign #freemasonshall #bathroom #bathroomdesign #design #scritti

Now, for something completely different! Along with many other City of London residents, I had the opportunity of a preview of the newest London viewing gallery, in the innocuously- named 22 Bishopsgate tower in the heart of the City, which was completed during lockdown. At 254m the viewing gallery is higher, by a few metres, than the Shard’s open terraces, and certainly provided the opportunity for the most spectacular views. Looking west to the Victoria Embankment and beyond, east to Canary Wharf and south to the Shard, the city became a spectacle in last Saturday’s sun. As well as closer to home, the Tower of London, the oval space of Finsbury Circus, as well as the Barbican estate. The final picture looks back from Bank towards the massive 22 Bishopsgate tower itself… #22bishopsgate #horizon22 #theshard #toweroflondon #canarywharf #finsburycircus #barbicanestate #barbicantowers #londonviews #cityviews #londonfromabove #modernlondon #cityoflondon #21stcenturylondon #londonarchitecture #londonmodernarchitecture

The house in Hampstead designed in 1937 by the practice of Connell Ward and Lucas. Some have said it’s the best early modern house in London, but I haven’t been too sure until being convinced on two recent visits there. A cut above most of the other work of the practice, it’s clearly inspired by Le Corbusier, as well as others of that generation, and makes a fair fist to be an English version of his villa at Garches. Three terraces open up to the garden at the rear, as seen in the archive b+w photo. Avanti Architects renewed the house beautifully for the current occupants, including restoring the original colours, certainly rather shocking in thirties Hampstead. Colin Lucas was the designer- and unlike his two partners he went on to have a second career as one of the leading architects building housing for the postwar London County Council. #britishmodernism #britishmodernarchitecture #londonmodernarchitecture #modernistarchitecture #hampsteadarchitecture #connellwardlucas #colinlucas #66frognal #corbusianarchitecture #twentiethcenturyarchitecture #modernhouses #thirtiesarchitecture #avantiarchitects

Is it Art Deco? Or not? It’s suspicious. Maybe this building looks familiar to you… It’s the SIS Building or MI6 Building at Vauxhall Cross by the Thames. Since 1994 it houses the headquarters of the Secret Intelligence Service (SIS, MI6), the United Kingdom's foreign intelligence agency. The history of the building seems a bit complicated. Wikipedia tells it like this: In 1983 a competition to develop the site was won by architect Terry Farrell, with an urban village as Farrell's original proposal. A scheme of office blocks was subsequently developed for the site, with a government agency as their occupier. The building had been sold for £130 million in 1989, with construction planned to take three years, built by John Laing. SIS ultimately became the occupiers of the building. Farrell's design for the building was influenced by 1930s industrial modernist architecture such as Bankside and Battersea Power Stations and Mayan and Aztec religious temples. The numerous layers over which the building is laid out create 60 separate roof areas… What do you think @londonsuburbia ? . . ©SCRITTI #travel #traveling #architecture #architektur #history #midcentury #modernism #modernist #modernistarchitecture #1930sarchitecture #artdeco #artdecouk #artdecoarchitecture #artdecobuilding #london #londonartdeco #londonhouses #1930shouse #suburbia #bauhaus #modernistestates #londonmodernarchitecture #vauxhall #sis #mi6 #jamesbond #007 #headquarters #secretservice #scritti

Hello! Risa here- I’m so excited to be traveling with my family in England over the next two weeks and will be posting some favorite art and architecture discoveries. We are currently in London staying in the East End near a very cool City of London housing development complex, The Barbican Estates. The Barbican is a huge complex of around 2,000 apartments and houses, performing art center, school, art galleries designed by Chamberlin, Powell and Bon and Ove Arup. It was built between the mid 1960’s and early 1970’s. It’s mostly made up of a very rough textured concrete with subtle pops of colored metal facades and staircases. It definitely tends toward the Brutalist style. My kids weren’t convinced but I found it really interesting! #rbatraveling #londonarchitecture #londonmodernarchitecture #barbicanestate #barbican

In the historic context of Albemarle Street, off Piccadilly in the West End, Peter Moro designed this office block in 1963. At the rear is a glazed staircase: as a whole, it’s a rather curious early example of contextual modernism in London. #albemarlestreet #britishmodernism #londonmodernism #londonmodernarchitecture #modernstaircases #petermoroandpartners #petermoro #postwararchitecture

Amazing destination walk today. From Regents Park up to the infamous Alexandra and Ainsworth estate. Designed by Neave Brown in '68 and completed in '78. Fab example of concrete living.
