“Bond recognized the shadowy figure. It was Alex Milton. His back was to Bond, and he was staggering. The W.A.S.P. must have delivered its deadly sting after all. Bond walked purposefully forward and came up behind the man. ‘It’s over, Alex,’ he said in a low, taut voice. Milton’s body stiffened. ‘Drop the briefcase and turn around slowly with your hands up.’ Milton bent and put down the briefcase. He raised his arms and turned to face Bond. His gaze went first to the dull, black hole that was aimed at his heart, then flickered up to meet the icy-grey eyes of his executioner. ‘Bond! I thought you were dead,’ his rasp was like gravel. ‘I read your obituary in The Times.’ ‘Bit premature,’ Bond replied bluntly. ‘Well, M.’s obit gave you a glowing sendoff.’ ‘Yes. Touching. Yours won’t be too impressive.’ ‘Look, James,’ Milton’s face was apologetic, ‘I know this is a bit awkward…’ ‘It is for you,’ said Bond. ‘What was I supposed to do?’ Milton demanded irritably, ‘wait around for a lousy civil service pension?’ ‘That’s the general idea.’ There was physical pain in Milton’s eyes. He drew in his breath. The neurotoxin was obviously taking its toll. ‘I’m not feeling so well,’ he said with difficulty. ‘I know,’ Bond responded. ‘It wasn’t part of the plan. I’m sorry for that.’ He meant it. ‘Where’s the rendezvous, Alex?’ Milton nodded to an old spiral staircase a few yards away. He suddenly winced and bent forward, his hands coming down to his stomach. ‘Make it quick then,’ he snarled through gritted teeth, staring up bitterly at Bond. ‘But there’s one last thing I want to do, you know, since we’re old friends.’ ‘What’s that, Alex?’ There was a twitch of Milton’s right wrist as the words spat out of his mouth, ‘I want to take you with me!’ The tiny gun that appeared in his palm flashed up at Bond. ‘Phut.’ Bond’s gun spoke quietly but decisively. A blue hole opened on Milton’s forehead and the man’s body jackknifed backward and landed roughly on the dusty floor. “Ironically, Bond had been inside that very same elevator on several occasions, on his visits to the cocktail bar in the Campbell Apartment. As the cab sank down past the basement level, he wondered if Olivier the bartender still worked there. The young French-Canadian mixed an excellent Vesper Martini. Later, perhaps… Bond stepped to the side, aware that when the door opened, he could be a sitting target. He gripped his gun with both hands, already regretting the suppressor. The cab shuddered to a halt. Bond dropped to his left knee, hoping the position might give him a slight edge if somebody started shooting into the cab. If that happened, it would be any second now. He readied himself. The elevator door slid open, this time awkwardly with a clatter. Bond stayed very still. From this angle, all he could see through a corner of the doorway was blackness. Cold air came into the cab, carrying the dank smell of the old tunnel. Bond flashed a quick glance round the door frame and pulled back. He had seen very little. Only the basic structure of the long, stonewalled cavern, with a few dim lights breaking up the gloom. The elevator door began to close. Bond swiftly hit the “door open” button to send it back. He inched a wary eye round again. Still no discernable danger. But he had to assume it was there. He rose onto his haunches. Then, with one flow of motion, Bond leaped forward out of the cab and into a shoulder roll. His Walther came up immediately as he returned to a one-kneed position. Nothing! Just the dark, yawning tunnel sneering back at him. He cautiously got to his feet, seeing things more clearly as his vision adjusted. But where was Milton? Bond started after him. He hoped Q Branch’s new subsonic ammo would keep his gun quiet. The Walther PPK/S .380 ACP 9mm was notoriously loud, even with the suppressor. But he needed its stopping power to face the FCB. Bond walked on, making his way deeper into the tunnel, when suddenly he stood frozen, his pulse racing. Up ahead near the wall was a hazy silhouette. I really liked Vic Fair’s unused concept, which I posted a picture of a few months back (and is in image 2) and so set about painting a realistic version of it that theoretically could be an actual poster for the film. “On the ramp leading down from the main concourse toward Vanderbilt Avenue and The Campbell Apartment, Bond’s eyes focused on the descending figure of Alex Milton clutching his briefcase full of secrets. Even at a distance, Bond felt his skin crawling at this proximity to treachery. He also felt a familiar rush of adrenalin. It was the thrill of the chase that precedes a kill – the primeval, almost animal tingle of excitement that dates from the hunters of early times. ‘Argonaut’s almost there,’ Bond told Dolan via the comms kit, ‘You should have visibility in three, two, one…’ ‘Got him,’ came Dolan’s affirmative reply, just as Milton turned the corner at the bottom of the ramp. Bond’s senses were keenly aware of the imminent danger he was now walking into. If he was able to infiltrate Milton’s rendezvous and eliminate the traitor, he would be directly facing one or more agents from Russia’s FSB. Those men were already in the building somewhere. Perhaps they had people watching him at that very moment. Bond could feel their dark and deadly presence. Even the seemingly innocent commuters loitering up above on the balcony were suddenly recast in his mind as potential lookouts. His muscles tensed at the thought, and his antennae continued to quest for enemies as he walked on down the ramp. To help calm his nerves, Bond told himself that, with any luck, the job would soon be over. In about half an hour, he would be walking out of the station into the fresh air and saying a cool, professional farewell to Dolan. After that, he would enjoy a fine New York lunch and then relax in the afternoon, followed by an evening with the lovely Solange – a great dinner, some great jazz, and back to her place for some great... ‘Hold back!’ Dolan’s tense voice in the comms earpiece cut abruptly through Bond’s thoughts. ‘He’s turning around!’ Bond froze. This was all wrong. Milton was supposed to get in the elevator. Why was he changing his plan? If he came back up the ramp, he would spot Bond immediately. The operation was already blown! “Back in the SUV, Bond and Dolan drove in silence, both men occupied with their own thoughts. Outside the weather had darkened and it had begun to rain, the heavy winter drops pattering loudly against the car windows and streaming down the glass. Manhattan suddenly looked gloomy and somber, which seemed to Bond to perfectly mirror his mood. After about fifteen minutes in the city’s predictably congested traffic, they turned right off Madison Avenue onto East 42nd Street and the car drew up near the main entrance to Grand Central Terminal. This was the designated location to execute OPERATION ARGONAUT, which effectively meant executing Alex Milton and whoever his FSB contact turned out to be. James Bond got out of the car and pulled up the collar of his raincoat while Dolan drove away to park the vehicle. He quickly ducked under the Park Avenue Viaduct to get out of the rain and crossed the street to Pershing Square restaurant, nestled beneath the bridge on the other side. The iconic New York bistro happened to be one of Bond’s favorite haunts in this part of the city – along with the Oyster Bar on the lower-level concourse at Grand Central – and he felt his spirits lifting as he reached the welcoming door. From the comfort of a table Dolan had reserved at the front of the restaurant, Bond would have an excellent view of the main entrance to the station. “Bond’s gear was already laid out and ready for inspection. The firearm was a Walther PPK/S .380 ACP 9mm short (or “Kurz” in the original German). Bond picked up the hefty, solid piece of steel – the type of gun he had come to rely upon countless times to save his life, and to sign death sentences for his enemies. Its familiar grip and the classy beavertail at the rear of the frame felt immediately comfortable and reassuring in his hand. Major Harris assured him that everything was fully checked and mission-ready, but Bond still insisted on going through his own meticulous inspection routine. When he was fully satisfied with the Walther’s action, he took off his coat and suit jacket, strapped the leather harness and shoulder holster around his torso and inserted the gun. He had also made sure to order a CRKT “Sting” double edged, fixed-blade tactical knife for possible close quarters combat, which he tucked into his waistband in its Kydex sheath. Finally, Bond put on his suit jacket and coat again, and slipped the suppressor and a spare magazine into his left and right coat pockets. While Dolan packed the comms equipment and a small aerial surveillance device, Bond went over to the window and gazed down at a world where everything seemed bright and innocent and harmless. But this was not Bond’s world. His was a dark and deadly parallel world of spies and shadows and suspicions. A world where enemies and traitors posed constant, dangerous threats that had to be eradicated. “Q Branch kept secret and well-stocked armories in many of the world’s major cities. This allowed MI6 to rapidly supply international agents or local assets with the equipment they needed for most kinds of assignments, without having to fuss with shipping weapons abroad at short notice. The armory in New York was situated on the seventh floor of an old but well-maintained Beaux-Arts apartment block on West 55th Street, near the corner of Broadway. Bond had specified what he required in terms of weaponry. The Chief of Staff had swiftly relayed Bond’s wishes to Dolan – referred to internally as Agent 593 – who had then dutifully arranged everything with the armory itself. All that remained was to make a stop at the place so that Bond could pick up and personally check his gear before using it in the field. Bond was not expecting any issues as far as the weapons were concerned. Everything would no doubt be in perfect order, and he believed he would be appropriately armed. The job seemed straightforward enough, but one never knew how things might turn out. Eliminating Milton was not the big issue – indeed, that part of Operation Argonaut would probably be quite quick and simple. It was whoever Milton was planning to meet at his nefarious rendezvous that was still the big unknown. Bond had learned never to underestimate the FSB. Russia had turned the killing of spies into a national pastime. As far as Bond was concerned, the old motto “Smiert Spionam” was still very much alive. “The New James Bond Living On The Edge” •• • A terrific publicity shot of Timothy Dalton taken while filming Bond and Kara’s meeting in Bratislava for “The Living Daylights”. A similar shot to this was used in “The most dangerous Bond. Ever.” teaser poster introducing Dalton as 007. The one on the poster has a side on view with part of Timothy’s face obscured by the shoulder of his leather jacket. I much prefer the image in my post, it’s just way cooler and Dalton looks like every inch a dangerous, modern Bond. Speaking of the leather jacket, his outfit here is a highlight of Dalton’s clothing in “The Living Daylights” for me. The supple leather car coat and layered crew-neck sweater works and this casual outfit always struck me as consistent with Dalton’s more serious characterisation of James Bond and it suits him enough to wear confidently and comfortably. It’s a practical and understated outfit too, something that a spy in Bond’s position may have realistically worn. It’s stylish enough to be suitable for his urban surroundings while rugged enough to keep him warm and comfortable when the mission takes 007 beyond city limits, across mountains and international borders. Talk about giving the audience what they want!! This is bar far one of my favourite lines from “The Living Daylights”; it’s delivered perfectly by Dalton with just enough of a knowing smirk to the audience for it to be instantly memorable. And boy did he look sharp in that tux as he goes to take down the sniper who has been assigned to kill Koskov as he defects to the west. Licence To Kill gets a tough rap which it doesn’t deserve. Sure it’s a harder edged Bond and heavily influenced by Miami Vice, but I find it a great thriller with Timothy Dalton in top form as 007. It has a great cast too, with Robert Davi a stand out as Franz Sanchez. I like the way Bond gains his trust in and literally pulls his organisation apart by sowing seeds of distrust! Top class Bond action for me every time I watch it! I also went to the Royal Premiere of this movie in London. I was working for the press at the time and this was a special treat to attend as it was my birthday on the day of the premiere itself! I really enjoyed this 2004 James Bond game when it came out. Featuring the likeness and voice of Pierce Brosnan, it felt a lot like playing a movie and was quite a good engaging story. I kind of think of this game as Brosnan’s final movie as Bond in many ways. I wonder how it’s going to stand up nearly 20 years on… I had the XBox version and when I purchased the game I cheekily asked the sales assistant if I could have the rather nice 12” vinyl poster as well.
