As social media continues to do a much better job of recording and celebrating the 007GB Club’s Gala at the Concorde Conference Centre in Manchester on Saturday, just one photo from me. As an ingénue writer aiming for excellence in 007 travel reportage, I had started to include in the text interviews with various people who had found and filmed in worldly locations. One such was Vic Armstrong, both for ‘Filming James Bond in The Bahamas’ and the upcoming ‘Bond in France’, also to be released in French as the not dissimilar ‘Bond en France’. Having spoken to the great man twice, and having been invited into his home to present him with a copy of the former book, when Phil and I were discussing the gala and the lifetime achievement award winners, it was an easy and open door that we fell through to consider Vic. During my trip to Saratoga a few months ago I began to search for the stops that James Bond made during his “Diamonds are Forever” adventure. I am still trying to identify the exact location of the Sagamore Hotel but as Bond narrates, “discreet avenue of Colonial-type clapboard houses some of the peace and serenity of a European watering place. And there were horses everywhere. Sagamore, paid thirty dollars for three days and given the key to room 49. This continued search warrants a return trip to locate some sites, visit the racetrack, and see the Mud and Sulfur batch location in better weather. Do you find that what started as an interest in James Bond later expanded into military, spy craft and espionage matters? This has often happened to me as I read more about clandestine operations. This has led me to this slim booklet “Anarchist Survival Guide: for understanding gestapo interrogation mind games” by Harold H Thompson. This reminds me of all the anarchist books and magazines I used to find at the local Head Shop during my childhood. This book is not just guidance when captured by a gestapo-like agency but also when dealing with police officers. The learning point is not to incriminate yourself, do not answer questions except to identify yourself, and immediately use your phone call to contact a lawyer. Many questions are ploy to gather information which remember as the Miranda rights states, “information can and will be used against you”. The less you say will better the defense options open to your lawyer, do not limit your defense by answering what you think are unimportant questions. The pamphlet includes a list of questioning techniques to watch out for. This just may be another weapon in your own defensive arsenal. Double-O Dining introduces the Hamburger or “that American creation on which I feed” as Jimmy Buffett says. James Bond enjoys his “flat beef hamburgers” while staying at the St. Regis Hotel, NYC in the novel “Live and Let Die”. It is not stated if it is plain or in a bun. The hamburger appears again on the menu at the Filet of Sole. Result: These tasted as a hamburger should. The addition of the ingredients into the ground beef as opposed to on top after cooking was a new technique to me, I suspect this may be an English technique. The mustard and horseradish sauce were an excellent addition giving a different flavor and a slight kick. Recipe adapted from “Double-O Dining”. Mix 1 lb. of ground beef, 1 tbs. grated onion, 1 tbs. tomato ketchup, 1 tsp. mustard, ½ tsp horseradish sauce and a pinch each of salt and pepper until well combined. Divide the mixture into 3 or 4 portions, depending on what size burgers you want, mold into a ball, and flatten into a patty shape. During a recent reading and group discussion of Raymond Benson’s 007 novel “High Time to Kill” I was so drawn into the novel that I continued to read the next two novels of this Union Trilogy, “Doubleshot” and “Never Dream of Dying”. Benson has a great style and can create action scenes that you can feel. In this story the old SPECTRE group is no longer active, but Marc-Ange Draco’s Union Corse is resurrected but no longer under Bond’s father-in-law’s control. The trilogy connects three plots 1) a stolen aeronautical breakthrough that must be regained from a mountain top, 2) the Union’s attempt at revenge on Bond for his interference in the first book with a 007 double to destroy his credibility, and orchestrate a Spanish takeover of Gibraltar and 3) Bond must face the Union to crush the organization and try to figure out their plan that is hidden in a movie production. A bonus to the trilogy collection is the inclusion of the short story “Blast from the Past” a continuation of the novel “You Only Live Twice” with a certain SPECTRE member resurfacing and Bond’s revenge for his dead wife. Bourdeto is today’s Double-O Dining Challenge. This is a spicy seafood dish that James Bond ordered in the film “For Your Eyes Only” while dining with Kristatos at the casino. It is the most famous dish of Corfu. Result: This dish kicks the flavors up a few notches and is not another bland fish preparation. The sweetness of the onions plus the spices added to the fish’s tastiness with a bit of heat but not overpowering. I served this with sliced baked potatoes. Recipe adapted from “Double-O Dining”. Sea bass was substituted for the hard-to-find scorpion fish. Heat oven to 400 F. Put 1 tbsp of olive oil in a deep pan on medium heat and add 1 thinly sliced onion and 1-2 chopped garlic cloves. When softened add 2 tsp of paprika and ½ tsp of cayenne pepper and stir. Add ¾ cup of boiled water, 1 tbsp tomato puree, salt, and pepper, and allow to simmer for 4 minutes until almost dry. Add another ¾ cup of water and half a lemon sliced. Lay the fish in the pan, spoon mixture and onions over the top. Sprinkle with 1 tsp each of chopped parsley, oregano, and red chilies. Place the uncovered pan into the oven and cook for 20 minutes. Remove pan from oven and garnish with lemon wedges. It can be served with fried potatoes, rice, or crusty bread. In the last few days, I have seen a couple of James Bond sightings in the newspapers. 007 seems to be imbedded in areas of our culture. First, Duane Eddy, the creator of the guitar “twang” has died. He set a new standard for his guitar technique, was followed by many musicians, and known for the iconic Peter Gunn theme. The article mentioned that he was approached to do the James Bond theme but felt that it didn’t have enough guitar in it. Second, is a full page devoted to the Chicago Museum of technology’s Bond tech exhibit entitled “007 Science: Inventing the World of James Bond. Some nice quotes from Meg Simmonds the Eon Archivist on the items that are on display at the museum. After many years I decided to re-watch the televised version of “Casino Royale” from 1954. It was time to compare it to the later Bond films. This movie features Barry Nelson as Bond, Peter Lorre as LeChiffre, and Linda Christian as Vesper. I believe one must bear in mind that this was from the early years of television, with low budgets, and the Climax series featured a new story each week. Fleming famously sold the rights for this production which later delayed it being made into a film due to legal complications. This film does follow the novel on the basic plot – to beat LeChiffre at the baccarat table taking his money which would be used to finance Russian intelligence efforts, depriving them of the money and disrupting their operations. This would make LeChiffre the fall guy for the loss, and probably elimination by the KGB. It is an interesting interpretation of the novel which really fails to capture Fleming’s story and characterizations. Bond is not that dark character poised at any moment to break into action. Peter Lorre is not an evil presence and seems to be a bit tired. Many scenes are missing to fit this into an hour show such as the bomb assassination being replaced with a pretty poor shooting attempt at the start; the almost fatal car chase; the meals; martinis; staying at the cottage near the beach; the love affair with Vesper; the brutal torture sequence; the assassination of LeChiffre; and no Vesper suicide. The torture scene is greatly reduced to Bond in a bathtub while they torture his feet with some sort of plier, and it lasts all of 3-4 minutes….so much for an agonizing scene wishing for death. I did miss the love affair with Vesper, the car chase with Bond’s crash and almost all the action scenes. All I can say is that they tried to film this but missed the target by a large margin. You must see this “taken the wrong exit” first attempt at Bond. It was 1954 so Fleming’s creation was barely two years old, so it had not ingrained itself into the public’s psyche. Luckily, they hit the mark eight years later with Dr. No. Unless you have OCD this version can be skipped and wouldn’t be missed.

Today’s Double-O Dining Challenge is Mutton Ragout. James Bond is served this in the novel “From Russia with Love” at the Gypsy camp outside of Istanbul. This is a typical Turkish stew that is made from onions and meat. Result: This is an easy recipe, much like making a stew but with vegetables based on onions/shallots. The lamb was very tender, and the shallots gave a sweetness after the hours of simmering. The wine and herbs give it a bit more exotic flavor and I will up their quantities for the next go around. The flour used to coat the lamb really thickened the gravy. This one is a keeper. Recipe adapted from “Double-O Dining”. Take about 15 shallots or baby onions (whole) place into a saucepan with heated oil on a low heat for 5 minutes until brown and caramelized. Take about 12 oz of diced mutton (or beef) coated with flour and add to the saucepan and brown for about 2 minutes. Add about ½ cup of red wine and bring to a boil. Add ¼ cups of lamb stock, 2 cloves chopped garlic, pinch of salt and pepper, 1 tsp dill, ½ tbs parsley. Once back to a boil cover and lower to a simmer on low heat for about 1 ½ hours. Just before taking off the heat add ½ tbs thyme and another ½ tbs parsley. I have seen a few interviews with Judi Dench discussing her book “Shakespeare the Man who Pays the Rent”. It looks to be a very interesting book with Dench discussing her acting career on stage, especially her experiences with Shakespeare. I do not know if there is any commentary of her TV or movie roles, I doubt it. You can see her passion for Shakespeare as she talks about her travels, fellow actors and the many characters she played. She has a remarkable memory able to recite portions with just a hint of a topic. I just viewed the newly released film “Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare”. I enjoyed this movie which seems a mix of WWII, Tarantino, and spaghetti westerns. The cinematography is excellent as if the plot itself and the actors are superb. This is based, very very loosely on the book. The film tells the story of one of the operations to disable U-Boat logistic support from a base in west Africa. Lots of playful Tarantino-like violence. You will identify Ian Fleming right off and throughout the film, though he is in an administrative position. The Spy Museum provided some great equipment for a gentleman spy, unfortunately not for sale; from the 007 films and novels were the gun cane, bowler hat (but with a .25 automatic), and the miniature spy camera. Other items included watch and cigarette case cameras (the latter right out of the Man from UNCLE) and a spy equipped jacket (straight from the 60’s Mark Hazard action figure). “THAT’S MY LUNCH!” Today’s Double-O Dining Challenge is Q’s Tuna Baguette sandwich which James Bond believes may contain a secret device. In “Goldeneye” Pierce Brosnan grabs the sandwich off the table and Q immediately takes it from him. John Gardner also describes the sandwich in the novelization of the film. Result: It has been a while since I have made my own sandwich with a baguette. I do love a well-made tuna salad sandwich (not shaken or stirred) and this one came out perfect. Of course, I made it myself. I had a simple but enjoyable lunch. To me tuna salad rivals a turkey for my favorite sandwich. Recipe adapted from “Double-O Dining”. One baguette sliced lengthwise. Butter both sides (old deli technique that keeps the bread from getting soggy). This is where I veer from the book’s recipe; mix canned tuna with salt, pepper and mayonnaise and mix to the consistency that you like. Finely chop celery and capers for a bit of brininess (my personal secret) and stir into the tuna mixture. Spread the tuna on the bottom half of the bread, place lettuce, sliced tomatoes and cucumbers on top then replace the upper half of the bread on the sandwich. Enjoying a martini and dinner at Pic - Nic Restaurant in East Newark, NJ. This is a popular Portuguese restaurant with a full dining room and a bar with additional tables, I prefer the bar area for the liveliness. Carlos, the head waiter, always takes care of us (he also hosted our trip to Portugal many years ago). I had soup and a steak with steamed vegetables and potatoes and Donna ordered salmon. After the meal Manny, the owner, stopped by and we enjoyed a very nice port. I am always greeted as Mr. Bond and handed a martini when I walk in. How about a book from the viewpoint of henchmen? I just finished “Hench” by Natalie Zina Walschots. Not a Bond book but it does share the mega villain concept. The premise of the book is that there are superheroes and their Kicks (sidekicks) and super villains with their Henches (henchmen) that exist in the world. While operating the heroes cause a lot of collateral damage, death, injuries, and generate many lawsuits. To oppose the super villains have their own organizations to counter and defeat the heroes. The twist here is this means there is an infrastructure for the hiring, employment, and even medical insurance for the Hench. Yes, they have H/R. The author has combined the Villain organizations with corporate functions parodying both. The book has a comedic view just below the surface. Henches have low level superpowers with the main character, Anna, having a keen insight into processing datasets. She uses this ability to create a spreadsheet with all details of heroes such as identities, strengths, weaknesses, injuries, and destruction caused by their actions and even the monetary costs upon society. With this information plans are developed to oppose heroes in many small embarrassing, political, and personal actions to add to the heroes’ stress and sway public support to negate them and their future actions. This all leads to a big hero/villain showdown wrapping up the book. Double Dining Challenge features James Bond’s order of Savara Salad while dining with Kristatos in the film “For Your Eyes Only”. This bulgur wheat-based salad dish accompanies his dinner of bourdeto. Result: This was surprising a very good side dish. The Bulgar wheat has a slightly nutty flavor, and the red chili pepper gives a bit of a spicy kick. This was an easy dish to prepare and will be added to my cook book. I served this along some braised beef with mushrooms. I did enjoy it by itself for lunch a day later. Recipe adapted from “Double-O Dining”. In a bowl add boiled water, or vegetable stock, to about 4 oz of bulgur wheat covering with about an inch of liquid. Let stand for 30 minutes until liquid is absorbed. Drain excess liquid, fluff the wheat. Once cooled add 2 salad tomatoes cut into eights, ½ red pepper diced, 1 tbsp finely chopped parsley, 1 tsp fresh mint and chili peppers finely chopped, 1 tsp thyme.
