James Bond’s dinner suit from @brioni_official has a traditional button one, satin-faced peaked-lapel dinner jacket with jetted pockets, four buttons on each cuff and double vents. The jacket is cut with straight, padded shoulders and a full but clean cut through the body. The trousers have reverse pleats and are tapered down the leg. The dinner suit’s cloth, a blend of 60% kid mohair and 40% wool, came from Yorkshire mill @williamhalstead1875 . The first time that James Bond ever wears a waistcoat with black tie is in GoldenEye. A waistcoat gives a more formal look than a cummerbund, though the proper low-cut black tie waistcoat is not a commonly seen item these days. Bond’s full-back, single-breasted waistcoat is made in black mohair—matching the rest of the dinner suit—with black satin silk shawl lapels. The waistcoat fastens with four closely spaced buttons, and the bottom of the waistcoat just covers the waistband of the high-waisted trousers. This type of waistcoat is more commonly found with only three buttons, though four buttons is equally correct. The shirt from @sulkaofficial has semi-spread collar and double cuffs. The front has a bib with large pleats and a fly placket—meaning the buttons are covered—that provides a clean, modern look. The black bow tie is slightly wide but has a beautifully classic look. The shoes are @churchs “Balmoral” cap-toe six-eyelet oxfords in black calf. Bond finishes the ensemble with a white silk puffed pocket square. Q Branch gadgets seen elsewhere! First seen in Thunderball. And again seen in Die Another Day, Bond uses a small breathing apparatus for some underwater spy craft. De-watching several Star Wars movies last week I couldn’t help but notice Obi-Won and Kyi-gon use a similar breathing apparatus in Star Wars Episode 1 And the last pic is a REAL Life version of this breathing apparatus that apparently only costs $250 most websites I looked at. I’m not sure I trust it yet to be real. This week’s blog is in honour of @piercebrosnanofficial ‘s 71st birthday! ‘Why are you running off in that monkey suit to marry a hooker?’ is Laura Holt’s line that explains why Mr Steele is wearing this dinner suit in ‘Bonds of Steele’, the final episode of Remington Steele’s fourth season and regular series run. ‘Bonds of Steele’ first aired on 10 May 1986, and the series was cancelled the following week. Two months later on 15 July 1986 at the end of a 60-day option, it was announced in the Los Angeles Times that Remington Steele would in fact be renewed for another six episodes, due to a combination of fan letters to NBC and the rumours that Pierce Brosnan was going to become the next James Bond. This renewal, however, prevented Brosnan from playing Bond in The Living Daylights, and he’d have to wait another 8 years until he would be finally cast as Bond. This episode has ‘Bonds’ in the title in reference to the bonds of matrimony, but it also might have been a nod to the likelihood that Brosnan would be cast as the next Bond. It would have been a fitting title had this been the show’s final episode, especially since the first episode had the Bond-inspired title ‘License to Steele’. Both episodes dress Brosnan in James Bond’s signature look: the dinner jacket. Many traditionalists believe that black tie is wrong for weddings. Black tie is not traditional wedding attire in places where evening weddings are uncommon, and especially in places where evening weddings were once illegal. American wedding attire traditionally follows what would be appropriate for the time of day. Morning and afternoon weddings would have traditionally been morning dress or stroller while evening weddings would have been white tie in the early 20th century, and since the middle of the 20th century they have commonly been black tie. In 1995's #goldeneye #piercebrosnan wears a cravat from Tootal, a British company founded in 1799. I learned of the product ID from @jamesbondlifestyle who credited Sean Warren with the find, and I couldn't resist putting the brand to the test. As you can see, mine is similar colours, but a different pattern, as I was really just curious to see if this was a luxury brand or just a basic item. After all, the #007 clothing gamut runs from @brioni_official suits and the classic shirt maker @turnbull_asser to @jed_north (shorts worn by #danielcraig ) and @carhartt (the baseball cap worn by #jamesbond in #notimetodie ). I would describe this as "high middle" quality, similar to @marksandspencer . Of course, Bond wore an M&S scarf in #spectre , as reviewed some time ago by @danielgaster in the @fromtailorswithlove blog. I'd say where this cravat really wins is value for money; it has a great feel for the low price I paid, around £5 on eBay. It wears well with an open shirt, or crewneck jumper. I wasn't so keen on this with a blazer, so didn't take a photo, as that leans a touch too towards the dandy for me. In honor of today being the 150th running of the Kentucky Derby 🐎 I’d like to make the comparison to a scene from the Fleming novel, Diamonds Are Forever and the Kentucky Derby in 2019 where the odds on favorite “Maximum Security” won the race but was later disqualified for an illegal maneuver. Similar to “Shy Smile” being disqualified in the novel. In the novel, Bond ventures to Saratoga Springs, NY to the horse race track. Where he is told to bet on a horse in a fixed race to win his payment for smuggling the diamonds in from the UK to US for the Spangled Mob. In the novel, Bond is able to get in contact with the jockey of the horse before the race. And the jockey thinks of a way to still win the race…. While also not allowing the Spangled Mob to get away with fixing the race. Connery Overall: 71.2 Lazenby Overall: 53 Moore Overall: 67.3 Dalton Overall: 67 Brosnan Overall: 69.8 Craig Overall: 80.4 Overall: 68.1 The Bond marathon has been one of my favourite marathons of all time despite it feeling long and tedious. The way the actors aggregate rating turned out is not surprising to me at all. Daniel Craig has always been a favourite of mine, Sean Connery did it first and set the standard for those to follow, and Pierce Brosnan still remains a favourite of mine, but drops to third overall. I don’t have much of a comparison, but there’s a lot of positives to take away from the series. Biggest one is stunts for me. I found quite a few stunts from way back that have been revamped into extraordinary today. There’s more to the franchise than just the Bond Theme song, and that’s whyI fell in love with the score through and through. It continually got better as the films progressed. The music definitely enhanced all the emotions of the screen. The visuals overall were very pleasing, but it was a struggle with the early films as such graphic imaging didn’t quite mesh at the time. The biggest gag for me is the whole one armed slap or punch behind the neck. You know if you try it in real life it doesn’t quite work the same, but I felt like the gag ran too long. George Lazenby was by far my least favourite actor and not even because he did a one and done Bond film. I’m the end he just didn’t feel cut out to play the role, or simply didn’t care. Part of me thinks if he did beyond one film into three films or so he could’ve found his groove, but nonetheless he’s not much to speak of. I wish Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan played more times. Dalton was definitely a good transitory Bond as the feel of the films went from one distinct filming style to another ushering in the modern era. I feel Brosnan’s Bond will always be the most memorable in the end because he went beyond the films with an addition of video games that are still played to this day. Continued in the comments…..
