His tenure gets derided quite a bit now, but he made the Bond movies an event again. The final chapter of the Bond saga. By the end of 2004, the writing was very definitely on the wall. Despite a promising start—the art editor appeared to love the work, not so much when the overall editor saw where the artwork was going. Artworks that I thought had been approved came back with lots of red marker on them indicating changes that needed to be made. "Bond's face too distorted—change" (the illustration with the giant centipede—I mean you wouldn't be best pleased to find one of those crawling up your chest would you?), "could we have a different view of the altercation with the photographer in the nightclub?". "Overall too much solid black—more tone less black". This last observation because the paper the book was printed on was apparently too thin. Net result, communications broke down and there was one of the portraits missing from the final tranche of artwork I delivered—they eventually alerted me to this via email and I furnished the last tiny image. The editorial direction was to place the POV under the water, with all the attention being on Bond , Honey Rider and Quarrell hiding from the guards and breathing through the stems of reeds. This was one of the examples where I stood my ground (and paid for it later). Another of the editorial directives was to keep black to a minimum—and again, I felt that eliminating black would destroy the necessary menace required for the book. Lessons learned the hard way. The following sequence reveals my modus operandi on this job. Back in 2004, the digital brushes available in Photoshop were terrible. So, I would create a very rough visual and then finesse it on tracing paper with pencil (I have never been able to ink with a pen—much preferring brush. But a brush wouldn't create the look I was striving for). I then scanned the. artwork into Photoshop and added the solid blacks. The name’s Bond - James Bond. Illustrations for Doctor No. This job was a real nightmare from beginning to end. The editorial direction would frequently involve several actions all occurring at once - so anticipatory action - action - reaction would all be expected to occur in the same frame. The editor would insist that her chosen viewpoint was adhered to and the endless comments that would come back with each artwork meant the deadline was well and truly missed. I was effectively blacklisted by the publisher and never worked for them again. Moral of the story, if in doubt say no before committing yourself - the clues were apparent when I received the brief, a ton of notes and instructions with each artwork.
