Sticking with the family theme, today I wanted to write a little about the song ‘Overnight Bag’ – one of my very favourite Rory songs and another whose lyrics are focused on movement. The song appeared on 1978’s Photo Finish yet was written initially for the scrapped San Francisco album. As has been well documented, the San Francisco recording sessions were ones of immense frustration for Rory. He wasn’t satisfied with Eliot Mazer’s sound and it all ended with the album being binned, breaking his thumb in a cab door and dispensing with Lou Martin and Rod De’ath and bringing in Ted McKenna. The lyrics to ‘Overnight Bag’ are melancholic and speak of the loneliness of being on the road. Dónal has said that they were actually written with him in mind. At that time, he was often away from Rory dealing with managerial business back in London and Rory was really missing him (“hear my plea and come rescue me”). If you’ve heard the Notes from San Francisco version, you may recall that the original song had some extra lines about Rory writing down his thoughts and sent them in a blue envelope that got lost in the post – based on an actual true event. It’s well documented just how very close Rory and Dónal, and I’ve written often on here about their relationship. When I think of albums that hold a special place in my heart, it's impossible to look past the incredible Fisherman's Blues by @waterboysmusic. A change in direction after the success of This Is The Sea and the massive single The Whole Of The Moon. 🌙 The band retreated to Ireland and recorded a huge amount of music captured here on this multi-disc Fisherman's Box. The discs cover previously unheard songs and alternative versions of the album tracks. It's an emmersive listen, chronicling one of the most creative periods in Mike Scott and the band's history. Whimsical joy going to the @lunaluna exhibition in #downtown LA. The original theme park was open to the public for 3 months in Hamburg, and was the vision of Viennese artist André Heller who wanted to bring art to the masses and convinced Salvatore Dali, Basquiat, Keith Haring, RoyLichtenstein, David Hockey to design a ride, theme or amusement of their own. Daniel McLean one of the visionaries and owners of the current exhibition gave us a personal tour retelling the history of how the works of art languished in sopping containers in Texas for over 16 years. Sade's debut album Diamond Life (1984, Epic/Portrait) is best known for the timeless hit "Smooth Operator," but the album is altogether stellar. The cliché would be to share said track, but I'm including a sample from "Cherry Pie." I think regardless of whether it's from the male or female perspective, we can all relate a new love that seemed so beautiful and promising that ultimately ended with empty promises. Typically, and maybe I'm stereotyping, listening to Sade is usually reserved for those entering a new infatuation or those nursing being abandoned by love. However, in my case, my sleep cycle is out of wack, and Sade Adu's voice eases my mind and relaxes my spirit. The Whalers took Game 3 by a score of 9-4 at the Hartford Civic Center. Liut turned aside 29 pucks and the 3-game sweep was complete.
