Now that I’ve finished the Animal Trilogy, it’s on to the brilliant Deep Red (1976). The use of color in this film is stunning. It may be Argento’s best use of color, possibly second only to Suspiria. Argento starts showing signs of how weird he’s going to get in this movie. We see the first suggestion of the paranormal in an Argento film here. I truly love this movie, and the @arrowvideo UHD transfer is to die for. This is an exemplar of the glorious treatment Arrow gives to cult film. The Caller (Arthur Allen Seidelman, 1987) I can’t believe I’m saying this but this film has EVEN MORE of a twist ending than Sleepaway Camp (1984). I don’t know how that is possible but it apparently it is. Also, I did not understand this movie at all. I thought I was having a stroke the entire time while watching it. You know how some films have awkward tone issues between scenes where you can see the direction was changed or a producer stepped in with their vision, this movie has tonal shifts not between just scenes but between literally between sentences and sometimes honestly what felt like between syllables of words. And calling them tone shifts is a vast understatement, these were monumental earth moving swings in mood, motion, general thought process, and basic human interaction. I would understand (and forgive) these inconsistencies if the film was translated from another language or the director did not speak the same language as the actors but had a very clear non-translatable vision but the three principles involved, director Seidelman, Malcom McDowell and Madolyn Smith Osborne are native English speakers so there is no excuse.

Suddenly in the Dark (Go Yeong-nam, 1981) Suddenly in the Dark feels like an Asian giallo film. Essentially a film about gaslighting, it’s set nearly entirely within the confines of a large country house. Kang Yu-jin (Yoon Il-bong) is an entomologist who while out on a butterfly hunt meets a young orphan woman, Mi-ok (Lee Ki-seon). Knowing that he and his wife have been looking for a live-in maid Kang invites the young woman back to his house. Mi-ok only has one possession to her name, a strange doll given to her by her now deceased shaman mother. The doll is said to harbor malevolent spirits and soon those evil spirits seem to enter the house. At first Kang’s wife, Seon-hee (Kim Yeong-ae) is thrilled to have this new helper around but then very quickly begins to suspect that Kang may be carrying out an affair with Mi-ok right under her nose. Kang will no longer sleep in the same bed as Seon-hee saying that he must work all night on his studies, he and Mi-ok often seem to be always missing at the same time, and whenever something strange occurs around the house Kang is quick to shift any suspicion from Mi-ok, instead reinforcing to Seon-hee that she is imagining things and maybe should consider getting a psychiatric evaluation. This gaslighting just ramps up and up and Seon-hee grows increasingly more paranoid and insane until the final showdown when we are left with the question, “Is this all in her head or are there evil forces actually at work in the home?” The film has a great sense of pacing and Lee Ki-seon does a excellent job as the creepy maid but the film really belongs to Kim Yeong-ae who is really stellar as the unraveling wife and carries nearly every single scene in the film. I didn’t really know that Korea had any genre films from the 80s or really that much of a filmmaking scene in general at that time. I thought there was kind of a skip from the 60s to mid 90s due to censorship laws but Suddenly in the Dark slipped through right at the right moment during a lapse in the laws and it’s surprisingly both more violent and sleazy than I was anticipating, although not so much by current Korean standards.

We have a new one for the Haunted Drive-In tonight, the Projectionist has chosen this 1943 thriller to entertain the patrons. I will admit that this is not a movie that I have had the pleasure of seeing before - though I am familiar with a few of Director Mark Robson's other pictures - like Isle of the Dead and Bedlam as well as Peyton Place and Von Ryan's Express. The Projectionist shared this bit of trivia for me to pass along - The Ghost Ship came about due to the fact that RKO Studios had constructed an elaborate ship set for their 1938 picture Pacific Liner. They wanted a movie that could be made on that set - which is exactly what they instructed producer Val Lewton (The Cat People) to do.
