What can you remember? MEMENTO (2000) dir. by Christopher Nolan blu-ray by @101filmsuk Special editions for films are nothing new. However not all of them are quite as jam packed as this one. Put out by 101 Films, the Christopher Nolan classic ‘MEMENTO’ special edition comes presented with everything a collector could love, all condensed into a beautifully designed hard box. Featuring both the regular and chronological cut, a range of new and archived special features, the original short story from Jonathon Nolan, an essay book and a whole damn file of polaroids and replica notes from the film, 101 Films have assembled one of my favourite sets to own. I’ve never been a large Christopher Nolan fan. Unfortunately my film taste doesn’t align with most of the films he makes. However MEMENTO made a quick exception when I saw it a few years ago. As a lover of psychological thriller and crime flicks that keep mysterious energy throughout, that also toy with the viewer and make them question whether they understand what their watching, Memento ticked all of the boxes for me. An incredible mystery from the start, not only is Memento told using a protagonist with a refreshing challenge inherent to him, but with a unique style of editing that cuts around the chronology and assists with making an immersive investigation. For a second feature film, Nolan already exhibits a kind of expert directing that would carry him to fame and praise for many a years to come. Under pressure… AFTERSUN (2022) dir. by Charlotte Wells blu-ray from @mubi An appreciation post for one of my favourite films of the decade so far. An incredibly heartbreaking, yet joyful drama film delving into the innocent but dark relationship between a daughter and her father whilst on vacation. Aftersun is a film that’ll make you want to check in on your parents and tell them you love them. The juxtaposition of innocent camcorder footage the daughter (marvellously played by Frankie Corio) takes of her father asking him various questions and just being a kid, to the dark and personal moments objectively viewed of the father (played incredibly by Paul Mescal) crying and suffering alone, is a kind of take on this sort of narrative id never seen before. It works fantastically. The way the narrative pulls along how we learn about whats troubling the father, and soon learn the consequence, to the days counting down leaving the vacation is one that creates such good emotional tension. Its an incredibly written screenplay and brilliantly directed film. This was a spur of the moment decision to go to the movies with my cousin. The plan was to see Jean-Pierre Melville’s Le Samourai in its new 4K restoration, but it’s possible a trip to Outback got in the way of our planned showing. We ended up saying “screw it” and decided to check out the Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque down town. The movie that was showing was Aggro Dr1ft (2023). We had no idea what to expect. Other than it was staring Travis Scott. IMDB’s description of the film is as follows: “Filmmaker Harmony Korine uses infrared photography in a dreamlike portrait of a tormented assassin”. Keep in mind, this is a movie that is completely in INFRARED, meaning it looked like and felt like a game of GTA with a heavy infrared filter on acid. It was unlike anything I had ever seen in a film, and that says alot. This movie isn’t for everyone, especially since the whole flick was jarring in its infrared-embedded glory with very minimal dialogue. It’s one of those movies you don’t get much of a plot or context, and you need to figure it out first yourself. This is very much the definition of an “arthouse”film. Honestly, it took 15 minutes for me to appreciate the movie for what it was, recognizing the importance and entertainment value. I’ll give this a 7.5/10, even though I was very unimpressed for the first 15 minutes or so. Cage plays a book company bigshot who loves nothing more than meeting girls in bars. One night sticks with him after he's convinced that the woman he's seeing has turned him into a vampire. Shots of NY architecture provided a cold and sturdy foundation. I love the straight lines, contrasts of texture, Brownstone buildings, bridges, and skyscraper skylines. Cage is unhinged and absolutely becomes the role. His fits of rage are absolutely genuine! He sinks into the madness that his character is experiencing, showing a range of emotions all while maintaining his classic 'Cage-ism'. The rest of the cast was fine enough, though María Conchita Alonso was especially earnest as Alva. This is a fun movie for a late night. HOLGER 24TH OF MAY, 2024!!! Fir the past two years, i have been working on a huge project. A project that has eaten me up every day. Its a project wich i dont know how i feel about. Its a project that has caused a lot of pain and joy. Its a project that i just wanted to strangle and yell at before curb-stomping it to smithereens. But i have also cared for it for two years. Going months where i did not work on it due to mental issues and the pure anxiety that the project may go wrong. The two feeding off of each other. In that way, Holger is as much a movie about its own creation as it is what i first intended it to be. I call it a short, but its over 45 minutes long wich counts as a feature. But something in me refuses to call it that. So its a short film. I have decided that. Its a short. The project is called “HOLGER”. Its about a man with a siamese twin. The short premieres on my YouTube Channel (link in bio tihihihi on the 24th of may at 19.30 Copenhagen time. There will also be a screening at that exact time held by @ruk_randersungekultur in their building. There will be a small artist talk with me before the film is played.
