The Finnish film is an absolute triumph for Nordic independent cinema. It’s a powerful exploration of how the small towns we used to call home, along with the things left behind, can haunt us. Guilt and shame and anger long since forgotten might simmer beneath the surface closer than we care to know. Red Static starts with a solitary man (Jari Manninen) in rural Finland begging his city-dwelling old friends to finally come and visit after ten years apart. The siblings (Roope Olenius, Veera W. Vilo) take him up on his offer, expecting a man gone mad from isolation, but are greeted by someone who seems surprisingly together. Yet, there’s a menacing atmosphere the film establishes instantly. Red Static is the antithesis of commercial cinema, and debuting director Sami Pöyry shows an uncanny mastery over his medium. Think Lars von Trier by way of David Lynch. Using unconventional narrative techniques, blending grainy images with clear black and whites, surreal and haunting passages, as well as a wealth of bold directorial choices, Pöyry proves a formidable force. The cryptic, creepy film examines gripping issues such as mental health, the desolation of rural areas, isolation, abandonment, vengeance, even the nature of evil. There’s a brilliant mix of influences ranging from early Dogme 95 to Dario Argento at play, but Red Static has its own voice. Naturalistic dialogue helps set a believable tone even while the film is deeply rooted in surrealist horror. The cast, with Saara Elina in addition to the aforementioned actors, are all superb. Cinema doesn’t get more indie than this, a dose of exemplary European bizarreness. The boldness of it is impressive in itself, but what’s even more impressive is how, for all of its unorthodox choices, it stays completely under its director’s control. Nr. 741: 인드림 / In Dream (2023) von 신재호 / Shin Jai-ho In Dream ist ein Thriller und Arthouse Film mit fiktionalen Elementen von Regisseur Shin Jai-ho (sein bisher 8. eigener Film). Es sind hier nur weniger bekannte Darsteller*innen dabei, ua 오지호 Oh Ji-ho (Filme: My Wife Is a Gangster 3 aka Killer Lady, Sector 7, The Grand Heist, kDrama: ua Queen of Masks). Die Hauptfigur ist Hong-hwa (서효림 / Seo Hyo-rim), sie hat einst Kunst studiert und verdient sich nun als Aushilfswebtoon Zeichnerin ihr, da sie Krankenhausrechnungen für ihren Vater bezahlen muss, außerdem hat sie an einer klinischen Studie teilgenommen, zum Test auf Nebenwirkungen bei Medikamenten. Eines dieser Medikamente hatte tatsächlich Nebenwirkungen, nach der Einnahme hat sie sehr real wirkende Träume, die nicht nur sie betreffen, sondern auch andere Menschen, denen sie aber zuvor noch nie begegnet ist. Sie sieht Morde, die in der Umgebung passieren und auch in der Realität tatsächlich durchgeführt wurden. Sie meldet dies bei der Polizei aber die glauben ihr natürlich nicht. Da sie auch die Fähigkeit hat die Träume von anderen zu betreten, versucht sie Ermittler Sang-joon (김승수 / Kim Seung-soo) in dessen Träumen, zu überzeugen, dass sie die Wahrheit sagt. Währenddessen tötet der Serienkiller (Oh Ji-ho) weitere Opfer und Hong-hwa versucht ihn ausfindig zu machen. Mir hat der Film ganz gut gefallen, er baut auf dem Konzept der luziden Träume auf, also dem bewussten erleben und beeinflussen können von Träumen. Ähnlich wie es auch der Film Lucid Dream aus 2017 macht (gibt es bei netflix). Lucid Dream ist noch mal ne Spur spannender, weil er ua. auf Action-Elemente setzt, außerdem saß ein großes Studio dahinter aber auch In Dream fand ich gut inszeniert, der als Arthouse Film deutlich weniger Budget hatte, was man ihn aber nicht ansieht, fand ich. Ich war gut unterhalten und kann den Film daher auch nur empfehlen.
