Some pictures from my PhD final artwork at DXarts, University of Washington M(ol)AR //////// HYBRID LANDSCAPE This project is an experimental installation stemming from my research on antenna design and fabrication, radio exploration, and machine listening. The term "molar" is employed to quantify electrolyte levels in water or any liquid, and that mineral is essential to running this work. In the title, there's also a manipulation and deconstruction of the word MOLAR, emphasizing the letters M A R, which, in Spanish, translates to "sea," the essential territory of this project. The installation featured four handmade antennas crafted from sweaters, through which a water stream flowed up and down to adjust the frequency response. While this technology is efficient in terms of functionality, it lacks the capacity to envision its potential on a larger scale. In this context, these apparatuses serve as speculative antennas projecting an alternative approach to social and technological development in the Anthropocene era. They were prominently displayed in a natural and wild setting, specifically South Beach at Discovery Park in Seattle. The fictional and hybrid landscape presented was a convergence of technological elements within the natural space: objects, sculptures, plastic, wires, speakers, computers, rocks, creatures, fluids, motors, sensors. A juxtaposition of electricity and water, plastic and salt, copper and sand, sound and objects, the inaudible and the invisible. This entanglement created a tension between nature and human creations, prompting a discussion about the role of these human creations within the ecosystem: Are plastic, concrete, and technology considered part of the ecology? Ao longo da primeira sessão de residências do Sacatar em 2024, uma de nossas artistas, Diane Barbé (França e Alemanha), realizou uma série de Oficinas de Arte Sonora com alunas e alunos da Associação Ilha das Crianças. Diane propôs sessões de música coletiva que exploraram a sincronização, a imitação e a brincadeira com uma série de instrumentos artesanais criados com materiais locais como argila, sementes de dendê e bambu. Com a ajuda de ceramistas de Maragogipinho, as crianças e adolescentes desenvolveram uma série de "apitos globulares", semelhantes a ocarinas, e exploraram as ligações entre solo, som e comunidade. Parcerias como esta com a Associação Ilha das Crianças nos trazem muita alegria, pois demonstram o potencial e a importância de colaborações entre iniciativas artísticas e educativas! A Associação Ilha das Crianças -- organização não governamental em Itaparica-BA --dedica-se a atividades educativas e culturais, como reforço escolar, jardinagem, capoeira angola, produção musical, cursos de inglês, e diversas outras disciplinas para as crianças e adolescentes de Itaparica, trabalhando sempre no contra-turno escolar e buscando sempre o envolvimento das famílias. As a contributor to the project “A Sound That Never Was” by jake moore and @bates_steve (The Dim Coast), I will be performing alongside Steve Bates at the @remaimodern tomorrow, Friday, May 10th, in Saskatoon, Canada, as part of the exhibition “Other Arrangements: Poetics of the Performance Score,” where “A Sound That Never Was” has its first exhibition site. Additionally, Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Raven Chacon’s graphic score, “Compass,” will be performed by Chad Munson. “A Sound That Never Was” is a digital instrument that generates a score based on real-time weather and seismic data. The score registers the vibrancy of the environment, specific to this time and this place, and, as such, this particular arrangement will never be heard in exactly this way again. The score draws from a library of sound files authored by fourteen international artists: Félicia Atkinson Steve Bates Matthew Cardinal Raven Chacon crys cole Isabella Forciniti David Grubbs Timothy Herzog Sasha J. Arythmie (première version) - détails 2023 - acier, câble, pierre, roue libre de vélo, manivelle, dynamo, dominos, câbles électriques, casque audio - dimensions variables Cette installation a été conçue pour la salle des horloges du palais Rohan, à l’occasion de l’installation Objections au musée des arts décoratifs de Strasbourg. Cette machine reprend le mécanisme d’échappement, qui est le coeur du fonctionnement des horloges mécaniques et qui tire son énergie de la traction d’un poids suspendu à une corde. Ici, le pendule est interrompu par un deuxième poids, ce qui rend le mouvement partiellement chaotique et génère des phrasés rythmiques toujours changeants. Une dynamo convertit ce mouvement en courant transmis directement au casque audio, ce qui génère un bruit grave et sourd rappellant le battement d’un coeur. On parle d’arythmie cardiaque lorsque le cœur bat trop vite, trop lentement ou de manière irrégulière. L’écoute au casque crée une sensation étrange et intropective. Le projet est réalisé intégralement à partir de matière première de récupération. La fabrication de l’objet et son fonctionnement sont tous deux conçus dans une logique d’économie d’énergie. L’objet et son autonomie font référence à notre hyper-dépendance à l’électricité et à la musique dématérialisée. A few images on the custom contact microphones I have been working on. 🧲 Magnetic Tellus: is something I get asked about frequently. I have been designing and testing this variant for some time now and am pleased with the result. Eight small but powerful magents surround the microphone. It's designed like this to retain sensitivity and the magnets are not placed between the microphone and the object. 🎸 Minature Tellus: A much smaller version of Tellus. Only 35mm by 10mm. Designed with acoustic instruments in mind. The electronics are stored in the XLR connector and this mic can easily be attached to objects with a small amount on tape or bluetac. Both have been made as custom orders but I ordered extra parts. Please get in contact if you would like one. They are a very short run at the moment but if popular I will continue to make them as standard items in the shop!
