Buon giorno tutti, Today Monday (4/15) we’re thrilled to welcome our friend phenomenal artist Oliver Beer (@oliverbeerartist) who joins Rail beloved Director of Programs Chloe Stagaman (@chloestagagram) for a conversation on the occasion of Resonance Paintings – Cat Orchestra at Almine Rech, New York (@alminerech). Olivier will discuss tuning an entire band for Cat Orchestra—a chorus of cat-shaped vases, ranging from the classical to the kitsch, are connected to live microphones that feed to a custom-built keyboard and synthesizer. Each key, when played, activates the microphone in the vessel whose resonance corresponds to that note, so that a fin-de-siecle French absinthe pitcher in the form of a cat playing a mandolin sings an F sharp, and a Japanese Maneki-neko sings a D; how with this, he has achieved the dream of Athanasius Kircher, the 17th century occult philosopher who first imagined the cat organ, or “Katzenklavier.” That hypothetical instrument corralled a group of live cats inside a piano, arranged by voice pitch, so that when keys struck their tails, they would cry out in pain; and why his real version is far kinder to animals and far more revealing of the sounds we hold within ourselves. Inspired by 17th century German scholar Athanasius Kircher’s cat organ, which elicited sounds made by cats, British artist Oliver Beer @oliverbeerartist created ‘Cat Orchestra,’ a musical instrument crafted from 37 found objects in the form of hollow cat vessels. Based in London and Paris, multi-disciplinary artist Oliver Beer creates innovative installations, collaborations, and canvases that give voice or visual expression to the musical frequencies all things have. Beer’s latest solo exhibition, Resonance Paintings—Cat Orchestra, which is on view at Almine Rech‘s Tribeca gallery, explores the frequencies of vessels shaped like cats. The vessels range from classically illustrated teapots and formal sculptures to emblems of pop culture such as the waving Japanese Lucky Cat figurine and Tom, the cartoon cat, from Tom & Jerry. A microphone in each vessel feeds to a note on the synthesizer, so, when the keyboard is played, the music becomes a symphony of the signature notes of the vessels. Beer sorted through thousands of cat vessels from all over the world to find thirty-seven “that sing in tune with each other.” He enjoys the fact that “because of the universal nature of the relationship of music and form, harmony and form, none of those objects can avoid singing.” Beer finds the sound they make magical. “The resonance of these things is so surprising and yet so evident when we hear it, so self-evident.” Read the full story by @faegyrl at Art & Object. #artandobject #oliverbeer #cats

Almine Rech @alminerech New York, Tribeca is pleased to announces Resonance Paintings – Cat Orchestra, Oliver Beer’s @oliverbeerartist second solo exhibition with the gallery. Oliver Beer’s work shows us that if we listen carefully, we can hear them. He’s been listening for as long as he can remember, since the days he would modulate his own voice to match the harmonic pitch of his childhood bedroom. Every room – indeed, every vessel – has such a note, known as a Helmholtz resonance, and for several years the artist, who trained as a musician before studying fine art at the Ruskin School of Art, Oxford, has been trying to tune them. For “Cat Orchestra,” Beer has tuned an entire band. A chorus of cat-shaped vases, ranging from the classical to the kitsch, are connected to live microphones that feed to a custom-built keyboard and synthesizer. Each key, when played, activates the microphone in the vessel whose resonance corresponds to that note, so that a fin-de-siecle French absinthe pitcher in the form of a cat playing a mandolin sings an F sharp, and a Japanese Maneki-neko sings a D. Let’s be clear: the cat piano—a “musical” instrument played by forcing cats to meow—is not real. But people have been talking about it for over 400 years. It’s one of several references behind my Cat Orchestra, a more humane choir of cats, which will be on view at @alminerech TriBeCa from this Thursday. Athanasius Kircher, a 17th century Jesuit scholar and inventor proposed it to “raise the spirits of an Italian prince burdened by the cares of his position.” The idea was originally described in Musurgia Universalis, Kircher’s influential book of musicology that has been well-known among scholars since it was first published in 1650. Animals feature heavily in the book, both as makers and listeners of music. From bird song to the noise producing organs of bees, one of the time’s focuses is on non-human music. However, the cat piano is one of its stranger diversions. There’s no evidence that the cat piano was ever made, but here’s how it would work in Kircher’s own words (translated from the original Latin). The player of such a piano would select “cats whose natural voices were at different pitches and arranged them in cages side by side, so that when a key on the piano was depressed, a mechanism drove a sharp spike in the appropriate cat’s tail.” The result, he wrote, would be “a melody of meows”.
