I don't mean a mere breather between shifts at a dead-end job or a sigh of relief after some important work comes back with a decent grade on the front of the paper. I mean a vacation for the mind, a stretch of isolation that goes completely uninterrupted by the stress of the world outside. I know from firsthand experience that these respites are all too rare for comfort. In a way, that's what makes them so calm. Stasis Sounds for Long-Distance Space Travel is the next best thing to an extended period of free and easy time off. The first album-length collaboration between Dennis Huddleston's 36 and Zach Frizzell's Zakè is an ambient fusion of two distant time zones, a bridge from the United Kingdom to the States which deliberately ignores the two's bad blood. This peace treaty of an LP trickles down a galaxy-sized gradient that takes ninety-seven minutes to run its course, but at no point does this massive scale feel like a responsibility or a limiting feature. Quite the opposite, in fact. As each deep breath of clear and windless new age music slowly makes its way to mental metamorphosis, the mood of the listener is altered in an undeniably positive manner. Centuries of spiritual history support the concept on which this record is constructed. Like singing bowls or slowed-down gongs in the mountaintops of faraway monasteries, the drones that 36 and Zakè establish together are meditative to the point where a peace treaty is made in the mind. These suites and stages sleepwalk from England to America and from the body to the soul, ceasing all manner of anxiety across their celestial path. I can't guarantee that it will take up the same space in your brain as a nice lounge about on a hammock or by the beach, but Stasis Sounds for Long-Distance Space Travel will surely accompany any of these dream scenarios with the ease and flow that they deserve. This is one of the best and most soothing ambient albums of all time. ★★★★½

Yet its soundtrack is a mystery to me. Whenever I come, I bring my music with me and the only glimpses into Brighton's sonic landscape that I ever catch are fleeting momenents during pauses between songs playing in my headphones; or piercing, jarring noises that are so potent that they slice through even the most advanced noise-cancelling tech. In these snatches of reality, the noises of Brighton are not fully grasped but merely hinted at. Each visit to Brighton for me becomes a dance between the familiar and the uncharted, the audible and the elusive, with authentic sounds of Brighton, its raw and unfiltered acoustic identity, staying shrouded in mystery. Despite being a frequent visitor, I remain an outsider to its voice, oblivious to the rhythm and tempo that come to life when the music fades and the headphones are set aside. I never set them aside.
