Hey everyone! Y’all ready for another list of great films?😁 This list is only SOME of the amazing Korean horror/thriller films I’ve watched and LOVED. I try not to talk about films I don’t like or didn’t enjoy because what’s the point of highlighting that?? My favorite three directors from this list are: •Kim Jee-woon • Na Hong-jin • Lee Chang-dong Korean New Wave Cinema is definitely a recent journey I’ve taken in the past three years. I hopped on the wave after The Squid Game hype (yes, sadly I was late into the game🙆🏽♀️). Outside of Bong Joon-Ho, I knew very little about Korean cinema, however I think Korean horror films are becoming a top 3 genre for me as the visuals along with the plot/storytelling is executed perfectly! Have you seen any of the films listed? Who’s your favorite Korean director? Let me know what you think down below and if you think my scores are too high (they aren’t and I will argue all night about it🤗). BURNING Burning" is a slow burn film that is oddly cathartic, profound & perfect! The movie is about the rich and their power, the poor and their powerlessness, and how they relate to each others' loneliness and boredom. It's full of symbolism in each & every scene with subtle references hinting at what's to come in the story or providing depth, meaning & significance to the characters & their dialogues. Watching this movie is like having a fever dream – it feels slow and almost tedious, yet utterly captivating. It is haunting & thought provoking. It involves unanswered bizarreness & makes the audience feel a sense of emptiness at times. The film captures its characters in their rawest forms, due to phenomenal acting performances. Yoo Ah-in's portrayal of Jong-su, a character who is bound to his misery without any escape, is praiseworthy & commendable. He looks confused, laxed & comfortable which is explained as to why he is the way he is once he starts to go through a feeling of rage, anger, jealousy & hatred against Ben. The range of roles that Steven Yeun effortlessly performs seriously baffles me! I loved hating his character, Ben in this film due to his insidious, arrogant & condescending nature making him a compelling antagonist from Jong-su's perspective, but he can't help it as he has never felt the same emotions as the other two leads in the film. Jeon Jong-seo's portrayal of Hae-mi reflects a complex & enigmatic character that exists in reality, yet many viewers may not relate to her. The idea is that if Hae-mi were a real person, even she might struggle to understand herself fully. Despite this, viewers will still empathize towards her character and come to recognize her naivety. Lastly, this film touches you so deeply that if you watch it, 5 years later, you're gonna revisit this film. Popcorn picks go to top tier South Korean thrillers 'Burning' and 'Decision to Leave', the Italian classic 'Cinema Paradiso' (which I got to see for the first time at the cinema) and the heart warming 'Castaway on the Moon' which is pure food for the soul. Honourable mentions go to 'Save The Green Planet (has to be seen to be believed...) 'Days of Heaven' (every shot in that film was gallery worthy) and 'The Gangster, The Cop and the Devil' (crazy thriller about a crime boss who gets attacked by a serial killer so teams up with a cop to catch him. Filmde birçok konu var tabii ki Kore yapımlarının vazgeçilmez baharatı sınıf ayrımı, kör gözüne parmağım sokulmuş cinsiyetçi tavır eleştirisi, umarım yerini bulmuştur ve son olarak genç işsizlerin özgüvensiz öfkesi. Filmin ana konusu küçük ve büyük açlık. Bu iki tür açlığı deneyimlemenin hangi sınıfa ait olduğunuza bağlı olduğunu düşünüyorum. Ülkemizde, küçük açlık hissetmiyorsanız, memnun olmalısınız. Artık büyük açlık hissetme hakkınız yok. Büyük açlığının farkına varan Hae-mi, açlığını doyurmak için film boyunca çabalıyor ve tabii ki fahişe olmakla suçlanıyor. Ben'in dediği gibi, o düşündüğümüzden daha yalnız. Jong-su'nun tarafından ise hayatındaki iki kadını kaybedişini izliyoruz. Bence Hae-mi'yi kaybedişinin sebebi, annesini kaybetmesiyle aynı. Considered by many as the greatest contemporary Korean filmmaker, Lee Chang-dong is a truly rare case in the peninsula's cinema, both due to his impressive filmography and the rather unusual (unconventional if you prefer) path he followed in his life, which brought him from a teacher's position to the seat of the Minister of Culture. Furthermore, it is easy to say that he is one of the few (maybe the only?) filmmakers who has never faltered in his works, even as assistant director, since all his movies are truly great. Adaptación de una historia de Murakami. 👩🏼💻 Opinión personal: Durante mucho tiempo la he tenido en la lista y he ido pasando hasta que me he medio obligado a seguir un orden para verlo todo, y ¿sabéis que? Me alegro muchísimo de haberlo hecho. Desde el minuto uno he conseguido entrar en la historia y no me he vuelto a salir, a pesar de tener un metraje que ya empieza a ser considerable y de narrar de una manera lenta y muy cuidadosa todo lo que va ocurriendo, conmigo ha cuajado perfectamente. Creo que se hace un uso de la fotografía y de la música tan cuidado que me ha parecido sobresaliente, te puedes ensimismar en los planos, y también en los silencios que creo que pesan en numerosas ocasiones más que los diálogos. Las interpretaciones también me han gustado mucho mucho. No voy a entrar más en nada porque merece la pena verla, con cuanta menos información mejor. Ojo, no creo que sea para cualquier paladar, pero si creo que si da con uno que la disfrute, lo hará mucho como me ha pasado a mi.
