Title: A History of Violence in 35mm Showtime: 5/30(Thur), at 7:30PM Location: Winifred Moore Auditorium Box Office: Opens at 6:30PM We are all set for A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE, which is our second 35mm screening event of the month! We are on a roll here... Join us tomorrow night at 7:30pm!! (David Cronenberg, 2005, USA/Canada/Germany, 96 minutes) Screening in 35mm! Here’s a good answer for the discerning cinephile seeking to answer “What’s your favorite comic book movie?” (Well, this or Ghost World.) David Cronenberg’s Cannes- and Oscar-laureled A History of Violence adapts John Wagner and Vince Locke’s 1997 graphic novel about a family man named Joey (Viggo Mortensen, fresh off of Lord of the Rings) who, in the process of stopping a robbery of the diner he owns, proves maybe a little too adept with guns and violence, which leads to questions about his past. Smartly stealing tropes from the American Western and recasting them in modern small-town Indiana, Cronenberg and Mortensen both do some of the best work of their respective careers here, and this marks the first of four collaborations between the two of them (so far). #ahistoryofviolence #davidcronenberg #35mm #websterfilmseries #winifredmooreauditorium #stlarthousemovietheatre #websteruniversity

Title: Stand by Me Showtime: 5/28(Tue), at 7:30PM Location: Winifred Moore Auditorium Box Office: Opens at 6:30PM Tonight at 7:30PM! Our Stephen King on Screen program continues with STAND BY ME. I can already hear the music playing in my head. (Rob Reiner, 1986, USA, 89 minutes) Sourced from the Stephen King novella “The Body,” which was collected in the 1982 book Different Seasons (the same tome that houses “Rita Hayworth & the Shawshank Redemption”), Rob Reiner’s Stand by Me is one of many King adaptations that show his talents outside of his usual wheelhouse of horror. Told as a lengthy flashback to 1959 as our characters come of age, a group of four teenagers (Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, Jerry O’Connell) hear of a dead body found, but not yet reported, a lengthy walk away from their homes, so they decide to lie about their whereabouts and set out to go see it. The film struggles with death on the surface—quest to see the dead body aside, the boys are troubled by the death of an older brother (John Cusack)—and this all becomes more poignant in light of breakout star Phoenix’s untimely death in 1993 at the age of 23. #standbyme #robreiner #stephenking #websterfilmseries #winifredmooreauditorium #stlarthousemovietheatre #websteruniversity

Title: The Most Important Thing is to Love (L’important c’est d’aimer) Showtimes: 5/14(Tue), 5/18(Sat) at 7:30PM Location: Winifred Moore Auditorium Box Office: Opens at 6:30PM (Andrzej Źuławski, 1975, France/Italy/West Germany, 109 minutes) Polish director Andrzej Źuławski has been finding scores of new fans in recent years with the restoration and rerelease of his 1981 masterpiece Possession, but he has an impressive body of work that is ripe for rediscovery in total. Immediately preceding Possession is 1975’s The Most Important Thing is to Love (L’important c’est d’aimer), which he made in France after fleeing his native Poland when his prior film, 1972’s The Devil, had been banned there. Romy Schneider, who won a César for Best Actress for her work here, plays an actress with few options but to make softcore movies. A paparazzo named Servais (Fabio Testi) becomes obsessed with her and tries to launch a production of Shakespeare’s Richard III for her to co-star in. Alas, the proposed male lead of the production (Klaus Kinski) is a problem. Title: L’amour fou Showtime: 5/12(Sun), at 7PM Location: Winifred Moore Auditorium Box Office: Opens at 6PM This Sunday at 7PM!! Jacques Rivette's 4+ hour L'amour fou, which is legendarily difficult to see, is here to grace our big screen for ONE NIGHT ONLY! P.S. Screening will start promptly at 7pm on Sunday night, don't be late! (Jacques Rivette, 1969, France, 250 minutes) Long one of the white whales of the French New Wave (which subcategory of cinema director Jacques Rivette has all but had a lock on until recently; see also Out 1: noli me tangere), L’amour fou is newly restored and finally ready to be seen by the waiting Webster Film Series audience, rabid fans of Rivette among us. In typical Rivette fashion, L’amour fou takes place amidst rehearsals for a play, in this case the tragedy Andromaque. The play’s lead actress (Rivette regular Bulle Ogier) stays focused on the task at hand while her romantic partner and play’s director takes to philandering. Screening without an intermission. Stephen King on Screen: Creepshow (George Romero, 1982, USA, 120 minutes) In between 1978’s Dawn of the Dead and 1985’s Day of the Dead, erstwhile zombie maestro George Romero directed Creepshow in 1982, which features Stephen King’s first produced screenplay. With a cast including Leslie Nielsen, Hal Holbrook, Joe Hill (King’s son and a horror novelist himself these days), and King himself, and with special effects from Tom Savini, Creepshow is made up of five stories collected omnibus-style into one of the most fun films of the King cinema canon. #creepshow #georgeromero #stephenking #websterfilmseries #winifredmooreauditorium #stlarthousemovietheatre #websteruniversity

5/9/2024, 7:42:10 PM

Title: Carrie Showtime: 5/9(Thur), at 7:30PM Location: Winifred Moore Auditorium Box Office: Opens at 6:30PM (Brian De Palma, 1976, USA, 94 minutes) Stephen King’s first novel was published fifty years ago this month, in May of 1974, and to celebrate we have a program of King film adaptations. Kicking the program off is invariably an adaptation of that first novel of his, Carrie, which American master Brian De Palma directed shortly after his weirdo musical Phantom of the Paradise and the Paul Schrader-scripted Obsession. Carrie stars a young Sissy Spacek as the socially ostracized title high schooler who also harbors telekinetic powers. Featuring one of horror cinema’s great endings, Carrie sets King’s course in the film world as ably as the novel did in literature. #carrie #stephenking #briandepalma #websterfilmseries #winifredmooreauditorium #stlarthousemovietheatre #websteruniversity

Title: Long Day's Journey into Night in 3D at the Hi-Pointe (地球最後的夜晚) Showtime: 5/7(Tue), at 7PM Location: Hi-Pointe Theatre, 1005 McCausland Ave, St. Louis, MO 63117 Box Office: Opens at 6:30PM Co-presented with Cinema St Louis @stlfilmfest. Screening at @hipointetheatre tomorrow! Advance tickets available at cinema st. louis's website. Webster Film Series punch passes are not accepted for admission to this event. General admission $8, free for currently-enrolled Webster University students with proper ID. (Bi Gan, 2018, China/France, 139 minutes) When Long Day’s Journey into Night was a first-run film in America in 2019 it played in 2D for just a week at the Tivoli, a brief run that was enough to inspire no fewer than three local film critics to include it on their “Best films of the 2010s” list for Cinema St. Louis some seven months later. Missing from that original run was the 3D element, which the Webster University Film Series and Cinema St. Louis are proud to now be providing a belated St. Louis premiere to. “Only” the film’s final hour is in 3D, but not only is that hour 3D, it is also one long, unbroken, incredibly complicated shot. From a genre standpoint, Long Day’s Journey into Night is a neon noir of the sort we’ve been seeing come out of China in recent years (Fallen Angels, Streetwise, The Wild Goose Lake), wherein we find Luo Hongwu (Huang Jue) returning to his hometown of Kaili and searching for his lost love Wan Qiwen (Tang Wei of Decision to Leave and Lust, Caution). Just 28 years old at the time of its premiere, with Long Day’s Journey into Night Bi Gan promptly rocketed himself to the front ranks not just of the world’s young directors, but the world’s directors, period. Title: Secret Sunshine (밀양 / 密陽) Showtime: 4/30(Tue), at 7PM Location: Winifred Moore Auditorium Box Office: Opens at 6PM (Lee Chang-dong, 2007, South Korea, 142 minutes) Mourning the recent loss of her husband, young widow Shin-ae (Jeon Do-yeon) moves herself and her son from bustling Seoul to Miryang, the small hometown her husband hailed from. Struggling to fit in, Shin-ae tries different approaches to her new life, all the while local try-hard Jong-chan (Song Kang-ho, who we just saw in Memories of Murder last week) tries to get in her good graces. With Secret Sunshine, which won Jeon the best actress prize at Cannes, Lee shows his adeptness at plotting screenplays as robustly as one would expect of a deeply involving novel. Indeed, Lee’s background is in writing, which he did before and during his celebrated filmmaking career—just earlier this year he had a short story published in The New Yorker. Title: Gun Crazy in 35mm Showtime: 4/25(Thur), at 7:30PM Location: Winifred Moore Auditorium Box Office: Opens at 6:30PM We are so excited to announce GUN CRAZY will be screening in 35mm on Thursday night at 7:30PM!! (Joseph H. Lewis, 1950, USA, 86 minutes) One of the highlights of what Paul Schrader called “Phase 3” of the film noir era, Joseph H. Lewis’s Gun Crazy stars John Dall, whom we just saw in Rope two weeks ago, as a nice but gun-loving boy fixated on crack shot Annie Laurie Starr (the Welsh-born Peggy Cummins), whom he meets at a carnival trick shot show. MacKinley Cantor adapted his short story with the help of then-blacklisted Dalton Trumbo (credited as Millard Kaufman), and the resulting film is something of a Bonnie & Clyde story replete with far more than its share of cinematic flourishes—to name just one, watch for the POV bank robbery scene from the inside of the getaway car, which was improvised on the spot and with only the key players knowing what was going on. #guncrazy #josephhlewis #35mm #filmnoir #websterfilmseries #winifredmooreauditorium #stlarthousemovietheatre #websteruniversity

Title: Memories of Murder (살인의 추억) Showtime: 4/23(Tue), at 7PM Location: Winifred Moore Auditorium Box Office: Opens at 6PM (Bong Joon Ho, 2003, South Korea, 131 minutes) In his first collaboration with actor Song Kang-ho, who went on to work with him again on The Host (2006), Snowpiercer (2013), and, most famously, Parasite (2019), Bong Joon Ho’s Memories of Murder tackles the true story of a serial killer who terrorized a small South Korean province in the early 1980s. Song plays a local officer trying to solve the crimes who is made to team up with a Seoul-based detective (Kim Sang-kyung, a sometimes Hong Sangsoo star), with the two of them scrambling to decipher clues and catch the culprit before it’s too late. Title: In the Mood for Love (花樣年華) Showtime: 4/16(Tue), at 7PM Location: Winifred Moore Auditorium Box Office: Opens at 6PM (Wong Kar Wai, 2000, Hong Kong, 98 minutes) Ranked the # 5 best film ever made in Sight & Sound Magazine’s influential 2022 poll, Wong Kar Wai’s In the Mood for Love only looks better and better as the years pass. (And it looked incredible from day one!) After establishing an international reputation on the heels of his effervescent classics such as Chunking Express (1994) and Happy Together (1997), Wong dialed back the style he was so widely known for and made this, a reserved tale of romantic longing, set against the backdrop of 1962 Hong Kong. Moving into neighboring living quarters on the same day, Mr. Chow (Tony Leung) and Mrs. Chan (Maggie Cheung) are thrown together first by living circumstances, then by social circumstances, as it becomes clearer and clearer that their respective spouses are having an affair with one another. Title: Rope Showtime: 4/11(Thur), at 7:30PM Location: Winifred Moore Auditorium Box Office: Opens at 6:30PM (Alfred Hitchcock, 1948, USA, 81 minutes) Though mostly remembered for being composed of ten-minute takes woven together and sneakily edited so that it appears that the film unfolds in real time in one long take, Alfred Hitchcock’s 1948 effort Rope, his first color film, has far more pleasures than just the ambitious choreography, cinematography, and editing. It’s informed by the 1924 “thrill killers” Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb, here enacted by John Dall and Farley Granger. After killing their old prep school pal and tucking his body away into a chest, they proceed to host a dinner party and serve food directly over where the body is hidden. One of the people in attendance at the party is a beloved former teacher (James Stewart, in his first collaboration with Hitchcock), who starts to recognize that something is amiss. Here we see Hitchcock stretching his legs and showing off what he can do once free of his contract with producer David O. Selznick, with whom he’d signed shortly after coming to America. #rope #alfredhitchcock #websterfilmseries #winifredmooreauditorium #stlarthousemovietheatre #websteruniversity

Title: Flowers of Shanghai (海上花) Showtime: 4/9(Tue), at 7PM Location: Winifred Moore Auditorium Box Office: Opens at 6PM We hope everyone had the opportunity to observe the solar eclipse today! Now, allow us to direct your attention to what's coming up next in our Tuesday night East Asian Cinema series—Taiwanese director Hou Hsiao-hsien's stunning FLOWERS OF SHANGHAI. (Hou Hsiao-hsien, 1998, Taiwan, 113 minutes) Legendary Taiwanese filmmaker Hou Hsiao-hsien has proven adept at switching filmmaking modes throughout his career. His own, exemplified by renowned masterworks such as 1989’s A City of Sadness or 1993’s The Puppetmaster, show a grappling with history and place, rich characterization, near-novelistic plotting. As he sees fit, he is also quite capable in operating in an Ozu mode of resignment and loss (see 1985’s A Time to Live and a Time to Die or 2003’s Café Lumière), often eliding over key scenes, as Ozu was prone to, or else in a Wong Kar Wai mode of sumptuous visuals, cultural and temporal alienation, and youthful romantic follies (see 2001’s Film Series favorite Millennium Mambo or 2005’s Three Times). Perhaps his one film that best combines all three of these modes is 1998’s Flowers of Shanghai, adapted from Han Bangqing’s 1892 novel The Sing-Song Girls of Shanghai. Flowers of Shanghai is set largely in “flower houses”—residences where courtesans entertain their clients—in a shroud of opium fog in late 19th century Shanghai, and the navigation of this world by both the courtesans and their regular clients. Hou is here collaborating with his usual screenwriter Chu T’ien-wen (who has a writing credit on all the above-mentioned films), the incredible cinematographer Mark Lee Ping-bin, and A City of Sadness star Tony Leung, the latter two of which collaborators Wong Kar Wai shot In the Mood for Love with immediately after Flowers of Shanghai wrapped. In Shanghainese and Cantonese with English subtitles. #flowersofshanghai #houhsiaohsien #taiwanesecinema #websterfilmseries #winifredmooreauditorium #stlarthousemovietheatre #websteruniversity

Title: Raise the Red Lantern (大红灯笼高高挂) Showtime: 4/2(Tue), at 7PM Location: Winifred Moore Auditorium Box Office: Opens at 6PM Screening tomorrow night at 7PM, don't miss out on Zhang Yimou's RAISE THE RED LANTERN. It is currently unavailable to legally stream in America. We had to clear the rights to screen this film through its international rightsholder to bring you this rare treat! P.S. In case you are wondering, we have a DCP of this film, so yes, it will look great on our big screen! (Zhang Yimou, 1991, China/Hong Kong, 120 minutes) A significant arthouse hit when released in America in 1992, but then rarely receiving repertory screenings in the intervening 30 years, Zhang Yimou’s third film with his frequent collaborator Gong Li is engaging and stunningly gorgeous in a way that insists on the big screen. Gong plays Songlian, the young fourth wife of the wealthy lord Master Chen (Ma Jingwu, Tsui Hark’s Seven Swords). Songlian learns quickly her need to learn to navigate the situation she finds herself in: household tensions, strict rules, competition (of varying kinds) with the other wives. Title: Birth Showtime: 2/29(Thur), at 7PM Location: Winifred Moore Auditorium Box Office: Opens at 6PM Tomorrow night, we have the 3rd film in the "Critics Are Stupid" series co-presented with The Take-Up @thetakeupstl. BIRTH is chosen by Andrew Wyatt, The Take-Up Podcast Host. Be sure to listen to the podcast episode wherein it is discussed, expected to drop on March 5. Visit @thetakeupstl 's website for link to podcast! (Jonathan Glazer, 2004, USA, 96 minutes) Birth (39% RT): "A load of preposterous twaddle" (NY Observer). "A meticulously wrought piece of hokum" (Boston Globe). "Corny, plodding, implausible" (NY Daily News). Scorned by critics who bounced off its austere style and discomfiting premise, Jonathan Glazer’s Birth remains the British auteur’s most contentious work. When a 10-year-old boy appears at the door of a posh widow and declares that he is her reincarnated dead husband, her meticulously rebuilt life begins to crumble. From this scenario, Glazer weaves a stylish, deeply unsettling Upper East Side ghost story about the demonic obstinacy of love and the illogic of infatuation. Featuring a fantastic Nicole Kidman performance, a deep-bench supporting cast (Lauren Bacall, Danny Huston, Anne Heche), and peerless wintery New York City vibes captured on 35mm. #birth #jonathanglazer #websterfilmseries #thetakeup #winifredmooreauditorium #stlarthousemovietheatre #websteruniversity

As the policeman Ka-Kui, who singlehandedly takes down the drug lord Chu Tao, only to see him released soon after and framing Ka-Kui for the murder of another cop as revenge, Jackie must clear his name, keep the case’s star witness, Salina Fong (Brigitte Lin, Chungking Express) safe, and not worry his girlfriend May (Maggie Cheung, In the Mood for Love) too much. Visit @thetakeupstl 's website for link to podcast! (Jonathan Demme, 2002, USA/France, 104 minutes) Mon Dieu! Someone shot the piano player breathless! I'm choosing The Truth About Charlie, the 2002 remake of the Audrey Hepburn/Cary Grant romantic thriller Charade. In it, Thandiwe Newton and Mark Wahlberg run delirious circles around the "City of Love" where cops are robbers, robbers are cops, and nothing--and no one--is exactly as it seems. With his globalized update, direct Jonathan Demme (The Silence of the Lambs, Stop Making Sense) weaves a tangled web between a nascent digital era, Stanley Donen's Hitchcock-lite 1963 original, and the contemporaneous French New Wave. (Don't miss appearances by Agnès Varda, Charles Aznavour, and even Anna Karina singing a Serge Gainsbourg song.) As charmingly wonky and woozily romantic as the original classic, The Truth About Charlie is an undersung home run from one of cinema’s most creative and humane masters. #thetruthaboutcharlie #jonathandemme #websterfilmseries #thetakeup #winifredmooreauditorium #stlarthousemovietheatre #websteruniversity

Title: Dragon Inn (龍門客棧) Showtime: 2/20(Tue), at 7PM Location: Winifred Moore Auditorium Box Office: Opens at 6PM Tomorrow! Our popular East Asian Cinema series continues with the archetypal wuxia (meaning "martial arts and chivalry") classic DRAGON INN. (King Hu, 1967, Taiwan, 111 minutes) Every major Chinese director seems to make at least one wuxia, something of the Chinese equivalent to the American Western or the Japanese samurai film, in their career. Wong Kar Wai made Ashes of Time, Hou Hsiao-hsien made The Assassin, Ang Lee made Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. The genre’s original cinematic master is Taiwan’s King Hu, whose wuxias Come Drink with Me and A Touch of Zen have both played at the Webster Film Series in the past few years. His game-changer, though, was 1967’s Dragon Inn, which finds rival political factions and other interested parties congregating at the Dragon Gate Inn, where the plan is to kill the exiled children of a recently-beheaded general. Title: Pandora's Box Showtimes: 2/16(Fri)-2/18(Sun), at 7PM Location: Winifred Moore Auditorium Box Office: Opens at 6PM (G.W. Pabst, 1929, Germany, 141 minutes) New 4K restoration! G.W. Pabst, Weimar master and discoverer of Greta Garbo, was at his creative and artistic peak in 1929, which year saw release of two films he directing that starred native Kansan Louise Brooks. October 1929’s The Diary of a Lost Girl is dreary and terrific, but the much more sensationalistic melodrama Pandora’s Box, released in January 1929, stands as one of the greatest of all silent films. Here Brooks’ mostly-innocent showgirl Lulu brings to heel all who come into contact with her. #pandorasbox #gwpabst #germancinema #silentfilm #websterfilmseries #winifredmooreauditorium #stlarthousemovietheatre #websteruniversity

As part of our ongoing East Asian Cinema series, we are showing a rare revival of Hiroshi Teshigahara's unnerving arthouse masterpiece WOMAN IN THE DUNES. Here for one night only! (Hiroshi Teshigahara, 1964, Japan, 147 minutes) Garnering not only a Best Foreign Language Film Oscar nomination but also a Best Director nomination for Hiroshi Teshigahara, the first time a Japanese director had made it into that category, Woman in the Dunes was a true sensation upon release. Adapted from Kōbō Abe’s also great novel of two years prior, Woman in the Dunes stars Eiji Okada (Hiroshima mon amour, Lady Snowblood) as an entomologist who ventures to a remote desert to study a rare beetle and, when he misses the bus back to Tokyo, finds himself taking shelter with a young widow who lives in a hut in the bottom of the sand dunes, who is constantly struggling to clear the sands that are always on the brink of engulfing her home. Visit @thetakeupstl 's website for link to podcast! (Harmony Korine, 1997, USA, 89 minutes) Scoring 38% on the Tomatometer and a disastrous 19 on Metacritic (“overwhelming dislike”), Harmony Korine’s directorial debut Gummo is a bad taste epic from distributor New Line (soon to finance and release the Lord of the Rings trilogy), cinematographer Jean-Yves Escoffier (who the same year lensed Good Will Hunting), and co-starring Chloë Sevigny, who would within a couple of years garner an Oscar nomination. Korine, having come to fame for penning Larry Clark’s Kids a few years prior and only 24 at the time of Gummo’s release, sets his film in Xenia, Ohio, in the aftermath of a tornado. His characters are all disaffected, yes, kids, doing terrible things to relieve their boredom. Those who hail from small towns will relate. Please note movie will play with a 5-minute intermission (you may see some of our promo materials stating a 10-minute intermission, which is incorrect. We apologize for the oversight!) (Akira Kurosawa, 1954, Japan, 207 minutes) Arguably the most iconic film from Japan’s most iconic director and starring the country’s most iconic star, it’s hard to top Akira Kurosawa’s epic masterpiece Seven Samurai. A poor village of farmers narrowly avoid being raided by bandits and overhear them plotting to return after the harvest when the spoils will be better. The villagers thus seek to hire some rōnin to protect them before the bandits return, which group become the seven samurai of the title. Among the seven are Kurosawa regulars Toshiro Mifune as loose cannon Kikuchiyo and Takashi Shimura as the leader of the samurai, Kambei Shimada. Title: Ugetsu (雨月物語) Showtime: 1/30(Tue), at 7PM Location: Winifred Moore Auditorium Box Office: Opens at 6PM (Kenji Mizoguchi, 1953, Japan, 97 minutes) An entry on the formative 1962 and 1972 Sight & Sound polls of the ten greatest films ever made (which same lists were key in codifying Citizen Kane as “the best film ever made”), Kenji Mizoguchi’s jidaigeki ghost story Ugetsu won the Silver Lion at the 1953 Venice Film Festival and was one of the first films from a post-war Japan to be widely celebrated in the West. Ugetsu features Machiko Kyō (recognizable as the wife from Akira Kurosawa’s 1950 film Rashomon) as Lady Wakasa, one of two survivors of a raid by Nobunaga. Lady Wakasa seduces the already-married potter Genjūrō (Masayuki Mori, also of Rashomon), which seduction leads Genjūrō away from his loyal wife Miyagi (Kinuyo Tanaka, whose films as a director have been recently rediscovered by American audiences), an event that she had been warned by a sage would soon come to pass. In Japanese with English subtitles. #ugetsu #kenjimizoguchi #websterfilmseries #winifredmooreauditorium #stlarthousemovietheatre #websteruniversity
