May 21 1958 was the premiere of Touch Of Evil. The restored version of this movie is a stark reminder that the Hollywood studios should have given Orson Welles complete control over the editing of his films; but the studio didn’t, and chopped up this movie before releasing it in theaters, and it got completely ignored. With this DVD, we can see what a complete masterpiece Welles created. This is one of Welles’ finest works, as corrupt cop Welles tangles with honest lawman Charlton Heston following a car bombing on the U.S.-Mexico border; the scenes of Janet Leigh as Heston’s wife, alone is a tiny hotel in the middle of nowhere and being stalked, are absolutely riveting. "Proszę nie pukać" to historia jednej nocy w pewnym nowojorskim hotelu. Bohaterów mamy kilku, a ich losy splotły się w jednym z pokoi. Jed to pilot związany z pracującą w hotelowej restauracji wokalistką Lyn. Eddie to chętnie nawiązujący konwersacje operator windy, dzięki któremu jego siostrzenica Nell dostała szansę sprawdzenia się jako opiekunka do dzieci zakwaterowanych w hotelu gości. Rodzice dziewczynki nie wiedzieli jednak, że pieczę nad ich pociechą będzie sprawować kobieta jeszcze do niedawna przebywająca w szpitalu psychiatrycznym, a jej krewny nie miał świadomości, że Nell nie została do końca wyleczona. Choć przeszkadza kolejny przypadek stygmatyzowania osób chorych psychicznie jako niebezpiecznych, to trudno taki punkt wyjściowy określić słowem innym niż interesujący. Do tego dochodzi pełna głośnych nazwisk obsada i powinniśmy otrzymać niezapomniany film. Tak się jednak nie stało. Niektórym składowym omawianego obrazu zabrakło dopracowania, lecz nawet w takiej nieoszlifowanej postaci dzieło Bakera ma sporo do zaoferowania. Akcja została sprawnie i ciekawie poprowadzona, no i jest to też mniej więcej godzina spędzona w towarzystwie Richarda Widmarka, a to jeden z tych aktorów, jakich zawsze przyjemnie się ogląda. Świetnie wypadł także Elisha Cook. Jednakże przede wszystkim "Proszę nie pukać" oferuje szansę obejrzenia Marilyn Monroe, jakiej prawdopodobnie nie znacie. To nie jest Monroe, która czarująco zaśpiewała "I Wanna Be Loved by You". Nell to kobieta potrafiąca ze spokojem grozić dziecku i już samo to wskazuje, jak daleko jej do bohaterek innych filmów. Mark Dixon (a never-better Dana Andrews), a cop with a reputation for brutalizing suspects, accidentally kills a high-profile suspect, Ken Paine, in a murder investigation. To save his own neck, he covers up the crime. Pain’s murder is soon pinned on the father of Paine’s beautiful wife, Morgan (Gene Tierney). To make matters more complicated, Dixon soon finds himself falling in love with Morgan. Can Dixon manage to save his career while also keeping Morgan’s father from taking the fall for Pain’s murder? Where the Sidewalk Ends is … entirely adequate. Noir fans will enjoy seeing the team from Laura – Andrews, Tierney and Otto Preminger – reunited. Andrews is fantastic as the tough-guy cop and the dark, stylish cinematography evokes an oppressive noir mood. But for me the pacing didn’t quite work – the story just plods along without engrossing the viewer. It’s worth seeing once, but not nearly as rewatchable as some of the other great 1950 noirs like In a Lonely Place or Caged. Six fedoras out of ten.
