El cine musical es uno de mis géneros cinematográficos favoritos, que a lo largo de la existencia de esta cuenta he podido compartir mi pasión por este, comentando tres de las películas que se encuentran en esta lista. Los musicales son películas que en su gran mayoría me generan mucha alegría, debido a sus personajes entrañables, números musicales (los cuales usualmente después de ver la película, escucho una y otra vez) y aspecto visual, con una dirección de arte increíble y coreografías impresionantes. Nunca es un mal día para ver un musical, ya sea para ver alguna de las películas dirigidas por Jacques Demy, películas de culto como The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) y Across the Universe (2009), clásicos del cine como The Wizard of Oz (1939), Singin’ in the Rain (1952) , West Side Story (1961) o hasta para ver un clásico moderno como La La Land (2016), que es un todo un homenaje al musical tradicional y del cine en general. Brian De Palma's "Blow Out" steals its plot from "Blow-Up' and "The Conversation". The best part about it is John Lithgow as an assassin/serial killer. Jack Terry (John Travolta) is a sound recordist for low-budget horror movies. He and his boss are having a hard time finding a plausible scream for “Co-Ed Frenzy”. One night as he is out recording sounds for future use, he witnesses a car go off a cliff in a ball of flames. Sally (Nancy Allen) was a passenger in the car. Jack rescues her and develops feelings for her right away. The passenger was a candidate for the Presidency. Jack gives his tapes a special listen when he gets home and becomes convinced that the crash was no accident. This knowledge puts him, his tape, and Sally in danger. Lithgow plays a hired assassin who likes his work way too much.Blow-Out is more of a thriller than the Antonioni or Coppola films and is much more simplistic. It is effective visually but less so in its storytelling. Not a bad film. Un fait divers de la guerre du Vietnam relaté dans un article de presse, puis un roman, un premier film... De Palma s'est intéressé très tôt à cette histoire, y voyant le potentiel d'un film. Malheureusement, les droits d'adaptation lui sont passés sous le nez. Il lui faudra plusieurs années pour enfin se lancer dans la réalisation de son "Outrages". Malgré une tentative du studio de production de vouloir faire tourner le film au Mexique, pour des raisons de budget, c'est finalement en Thaïlande, où les décors naturels sont très similaires au Vietnam, que le tournage aura lieu. De Palma sélectionne son casting jusqu'au delà des frontières US, allant jusqu'à Paris pour trouver l'actrice qui va incarner Tran Thi Oanh. Il fait venir d'anciens soldats pour conseiller son équipe. Et certains d'entre eux vivront difficilement ce retour près du sol vietnamien. Il embauche un premier instructeur militaire qui va malmener les acteurs, jusqu'à en blesser certains. Des tensions emergent entre les deux acteurs principaux. Sean Penn se la jouant très "actor studio" passe son temps libre avec les soldats et fait tout son possible pour éviter de créer tout lien social avec Michael J Fox, jusqu'à devenir réellement hostile avec celui-ci, afin de rendre plus crédible la rivalité entre les deux protagoniste. Il n'y a pas de héros dans le film. Eriksson ne se décidera à réagir que trop tard, et ses actions par la suite seront motivées par une recherche de rédemption. Obviously Obsession (1976) is a pastiche of Hitchcock’s Vertigo. One of the clearest nods to the 1959 classic is in its score by Bernard Herrmann - the legendary film composer who worked with Hitch many times and, yes, scored Vertigo. When you’re making a ‘paraphrased remake’ such as this, there can be a line where imitation crosses into something else. If you’re actually having the original person write a score for your movie and having him write in his signature style, things can go quickly from ‘channeling’ to simply continuing the thematic explorations that it inspired in him. Composed very close to Herrmann’s death, he considered the score to Obsession to be the most beautiful he had ever written. This is very intriguing given that it stands among his least famous. Perhaps returning to the themes of one of his celebrated scores helped him perfect something he had been always trying to articulate. After his death in 1976, Herrmann received double Oscar nominations for both this film and his final work: Taxi Driver (1976). Just because New Hollywood was an American movement doesn’t mean it was devoid of foreign figures. In particular, the political unrest in Eastern Europe in the postwar era provided the impetus for an influx of filmmakers and craftspeople to unleash their talents on the American cinematic landscape. Cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond (who shot Obsession) was undoubtedly one of the most celebrated imports of the era. His origin story is as legendary as it is brave: he and fellow DP László Kovács put a camera in a shopping bag and covertly filmed the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. Smuggling themselves and their 30 thousand feet of film to Austria, they shortly after arrived in America as political refugees. Both men went on to make their marks and define the look of film for years to come. Zsigmond’s collaborators are a veritable who’s who of the American New Wave: Altman, Allen, Spielberg, Cimino, and of course De Palma. His work was recognized by the Academy for Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977). Zsigmond died on January 1st, 2016 inadvertently kicking off a year of seminal cultural deaths. I just finished this fascinating book about Hollywood Cinema in the 70’s and the deranged directors and producers that permeated Los Angeles. Brian de Palma tend à réaliser ce qu’il a toujours aimé et nous plonger au cœur de l’image. Il y utilise tous les artifices chers à la grammaire de son art. Le film tentera une audacieuse synthèse en mélangeant habilement le thème du double avec celui du voyeurisme, tous deux au cœur même de l’œuvre hitchcockienne. Le titre Body Double fait référence à la doublure-corps régulièrement employée au cinéma pour faire illusion en masquant les imperfections esthétiques de la vedette ou son refus d’apparaître nue. De Palma ayant choisi le milieu du cinéma, il nous rappelle que le septième art est par essence le domaine de l’illusion. Le film distille un parfum envoûtant qui doit beaucoup au travail de Pino Donaggio, dont la musique atmosphérique nimbe le film d’un parfum d’érotisme entêtant qui est gravé dans les mémoires. De ce fait Body Double est un film artistiquement personnel, et malgré cette vaste entreprise de désacralisation de la quintessence du cinéma hitchcockien, il n’en demeure pas moins une œuvre fabuleuse, énième preuve de la richesse du cinéma De Palma. Body Double est un thriller fantastique, flirtant avec le nihilisme, jouant avec les pulsions viscérales de son public, déployant une métaphore acide de l’industrie du cinéma et du spectacle.

May 9 1980 was the premiere of Friday The 13th. After too many by-the-numbers sequels, I’ve really come to appreciate the original in this long-running franchise. The movie’s strengths include the killer-point-of-view cinematography, the climatic battle that’s pretty tough stuff, and the final twist stole from Brian De Palma’s Carrie. As far as slasher movies go, this one is well done, with the wooded campgrounds looking particularly eerie after dark. Betsy Palmer performs her role with plenty of gusto. The focus on horny teens getting killed right after jumping into bed (stolen from John Carpenter’s 1978 Halloween) gets tiresome, and you wish they had come up with a few more creative ways to off their cardboard characters. Ah well, still fun overall, although as far as franchises go, I much prefer Halloween, A Nightmare On Elm Street, Scream and The Exorcist. Un satisfactorio thriller australiano rodado para la TV, con influencias del cine de Carpenter, Argento y De Palma, bien llevado y que pese a adivinarse al asesino de forma muy evidente mucho antes del final consigue verse con interés hasta la conclusión.
