I have to thank @robzombieofficial for making me realize how good and important Karen Black was. It happened when 'House of 1000 Corpses' came out. I was blown away by that movie, and when I heard Zombie talking about Black so fondly, I knew I had to go out and look for more movies with her. I had already seen some, like Hitchcock's 'Family Plot', 'Capricorn One' and 'Five Easy Pieces', but there were many more great Black performances out there. For example, I watched 'The Great Gasby', 'Burnt Offerings', 'The Pyx' (give me a bluray of this movie!), 'Day of the Locust' and, of course: 'Trilogy of Terror'. Now, the funny thing with this anthology is that the segment it is mostly known for, 'Amelia', wasn't my favorite upon my first watch. I am not saying it is bad, not at all, but I found the other segments more interesting. Here’s another trio of blind bought films. The Real McCoy (1993) – Kim Basinger plays a cat burglar who after leaving prison wants to be on the straight and narrow but it seems life may throw her another curveball. Feels very Hudson Hawk in it’s premise. Kim Basinger in the 90’s, yeah, I’ll grab that on blu. Wanted: Dead or Alive (1986) – The C.I.A. offers a bounty hunter a quarter of a million dollars to track down a terrorist who bombed a movie theater. Rutger Hauer plays said bounty hunter. He’s also an ex-C.I.A. agent. Weird premise but it’s late 80’s Rutger, who cares about the premise? I’ve been wanting to add this film to my collection for a while now. Should be a fun watch. Ronin (1998) – I’m shocked as you are for never having seen this before. Jean Reno, DeNiro, Katarina Witt and Sean Bean (I bet he dies) star. Apparently Ronin has one of the greatest car chase sequences and it involves a bazooka. I love that gum. Monday Daydreaming Week 61! This week we have a film that I actually haven’t seen but have heard nothing but great things about, 1984’s The Killing Fields! This is based on real life when Khmer Rouge took over Cambodia. I think this film definitely is one that deserves the upgrade given the reviews and the historical significance of it. Plus @warnerbrosentertainment @wbpictures seems to be interested in what titles we want on 4K so this definitely should be brought up for discussion. The blu-ray came out back in 2014 for the film’s 30th anniversary so why not continue that tradition and release a beautifully restored 4K for it’s 40th. I would be happy with a slip and steelbook release from Warner bros themselves but I think @criterioncollection or @kinolorber would be excellent options to license it out! I had placed a large Kino Lorber order last month and apparently forgot to post about it. Here’s the first batch of flicks from that order, all blind buys. Neon City (1991) – Futuristic post apocalyptic film that follows people trying to escape to a safe haven called Neon City after a solar disaster. I bet you it’s not as good as Mad Max but much better than Waterworld. I’ll take Michael Ironside and Vanity over Kevin Costner ANYDAY. Stick (1985) – Burt Reynolds is back, this time being chased by an albino badguy after a package handoff goes bad and he’s blamed for it… or something. I don’t know. Written by Elmore Leonard and directed by the Burt himself, either it’s going to be great or REALLY bad. This film falls into an interesting time for Burt’s career. It’s post Smokey & The Bandit and pre-Evening Shade. Feels like he’s grabbing any available project coming his way, playing this tough guy in these low rated action films (Malone/Rent-A-Cop/Heat). This film’s got a great cast including George Segal and Candice Bergin. Should be an interesting watch. Mo’ Better Blues (1990) – I don’t have much of Spike Lee’s work and being only 11 when this film came out, I didn’t have much interest in Jazz. Now at 45, I can’t say my interest in Jazz increased much but Spike’s work did. Kino Lorber released a bunch of his earlier work on blu-ray and this is the first one I grabbed off the pile. This evening’s feature film presentation, “NATIVE SON” (1951 @ 1hr 48mins) // One of the most controversial novels of its day, Richard Wright’s Native Son (first published in 1940) exposed the injustices of urban African-American life, witnessed through the eyes of Bigger Thomas, whose violent tendencies and moral confusion were the natural result of a lifetime of deprivation. In prison for murder and sentenced to death, Thomas reflects on the circumstances that led to his fate. Kino Lorber presents a new restoration of the 1951 film version of the novel, directed by Pierre Chenal and starring Richard Wright as Bigger Thomas. It is presented in association with the Library of Congress, Fernando Martin Peña and Argentina Sono Film. When it was initially released in the U.S., Native Son was heavily censored by regional state/municipal censor boards where it played.
